It unlocks walkthroughs each level and how to use each power up or something. Not really important 2 use.

Collecting all the Star Coins unlocks the World 9 after you beat the game.

And I guess(As we see in this video) it unlocks a secret exit in one of the levels in the completely finished world.

Actually, you can get that secret even if you don't all the star coins. Just do liek he showed, and you can go to World 5 with ease. However, like you said each World that has 100% complete star coins unlocks a level in World 9. For instance World 1 unlocks World 9 - 1.
