I've played the 9th, which is great, but this is symphony is electrifying from beginning to end and much more difficult than the New World, at least from the perspective of a first violin. It is my favorite symphony ever.
I bought the Dover book with the scores for Dvorak's 8th and 9th Symphonies to listen to the 9th, without paying much attention to this piece. When I finally decided to listen to it a year later, I was blown away! I don't know how I could have gone that long without it!
Camera work and video direction which makes *no musical sense*. Watch for coverage of the Cor Anglais just as hes putting his axe down (7:48 et seq.) Those indeed were the days. Mehta made that orch great in the meantime.

Whew! Mehta was a young squirt in this recording. Brilliant but the Abbado recording with the Berlin Philharmonic is more stunning.

I agree, Dvorak's 9th gets all the attention, and yet his 6th, 7th, and 8th are all unbelievable.
