Nice! I just have one question, at 1:44, who sings "Don't you know it's gonna"? (neither George nor Paul are singing and George only comes in at 1:46 with "beeee")
I heard that it was engineer geoff emerick that captured this raw sound by plugging John directly into the soundboard and driving him up enough before it got too muddled. The dirty sound of the P90 pickps on Johns Epiphone Casino is what created the sound.
George was just playing barre chords on his les paul , and filling in the spots
The "Paul is dead" stories were created by crackpots with no lives and are regarded as the most foolish and laughable of all conspiracy theories with the possible exception of the one that Elvis lives on Saturn. The reason that the current Paul looks like him, sounds like him, writes songs like him, has the same humour, laugh and morals as him and has the same childhood memories as him and his brother is that it it him and only truely stupid people think otherwise.
the music was the same music track from the single (including the organ); the vocals were live. the end vocals ("alright!") were both live and part of the backing track. it's a music video, people, not a performance.
Not only did they pull out the stops, they looked like they were having a great time. This is really an example of how excellent they could be as a band, live for that matter!
Seems like they may have pre recorded it earlier in the day then mimed to the pre recording, as there are a couple of places where the vocals aren't right. Also at the end you can hear someone talking very faintly as if a mic had been left live after a recording. I'm not saying that IS what happened it is just a thought on my part as I am a recording engineer/producer of many years and that sort of thing did happen back then. Now it's just mime to the single or use pitch correction or vocoders.
This sounds like a weird hybrid of a live version and the studio version. Who is playing keyboards? Also, at 3:24 you hear John's final "allll right", but he's nowhere near the microphone. Strange.
@designermite check out my extensive playlist , open to all, and all beatles , . . . thier still here , and in my heart , I even do the sgt pepper look , . . and have all my life , yes Im also a musician and a car customizer in Roswell New Mexico , jamming out daily in my garage to the fab 4
I wish this version would have been on the White Album, so much rollicking energy to it, it's like listening to post-hardcore alternative rock grunge or something lol
@todtubetod Probably only the vocals were live, but not the instruments (mostly because amplificating vocals is much easier than guitars, bass and drums, and TV studios at that time didn't have a lot of gear)
@Freyja1133 you're a little late man, but thanks... I have 3 programs to get youtube videos and mp3, but that video has copyright, so I couldn't download it...
Wow! All I can say is that I was glad that I was there, and that these guys were among many events and individuals and musical forms made me happy to be alive in the 1960's. But, when this was recorded, they later said that it was all down hill from there. Hard to believe John Lennon was shot dead 30 years ago next month.
Wow! All I can say is that I was glad that I was there, and that these guys were among many events and individuals and musical forms made me happy to be alive in the 1960's.
same video on smothers brothers....i think they film this in London and let TV shows around the world intro it....like it is exclusive to that TV show
I've always wondered about this video. I love the Beatles but it sounds like they are singing live to the backing track. The countdown could have been on the backing track as well. The piano is heard but not seen. The instruments sound just like the record. I KNOW you can hear at the start the guitars but maybe when the song started they were turned down in favor of the backing. The distortion was created by overloading the board, not by a Fender amp. Too exact.
@missionrd100 they are that's how they did tv then hell everyone knows this at least they didn't lip sync like mj and other crap music stars or use computerized microphones like jay z and Beyoncé and other talentless dweebs
@missionrd100 when i first saw your comment, i was thinking "they couldnt have done that...?" but then i noticed John back up and didn't say the last "alright!", i didn't even see his mouth move, yet i heard him say it.
That's just it. I am not saying that I know. The fact is; I don't know. I WOULD like to know the truth is only the people who were there really know what was going on.
But it still is a great video nonetheless. The Beatles really could groove when they wanted to.
@missionrd100 One of the appeals -- and strengths -- of The Beatles was that they didn't LIMIT themselves to only "rock" -- unlike nearly all other, especially US, "rock" bands.
@JNagarya I agree. I just don't know what it was in my comments that prompted this reply. But hey, shine on and all that. The Beatles were great and we always will have the records. It's wonderful.
Amazing song!!!! Real rock and roll, which doesn't really exist today. I'm 19 and I really wish I had been born in the 40s so I could have been around during the 60s. George is so freaking gorgeous! I'm in love with a man who's dead, but I'd rather have it that way than be in love with the Jonas Brothers or gay Justin Bieber lol. Someday when I have kids, they will not be allowed to listen to that Disney crap. I'm gonna raise them on the Beatles' music.
Surprise! David Frost didn't interrupt the song to ask his tantalizing questions. His "delicious" questions annoy the hell out of me. And he has the nerve to put down Dick Cavette because he's doesn't ask obvious questions and has humor only Frost can dream of... Frost Kills (interviews)
I've viewed the video several times, and the first bit with George talking to Paul in particular several more times, and I'm pretty convinced that George says "John's monitor is shit," and not "John smells like shit." I can certainly see why it could be interpreted as the latter, but the former would make more sense considering the feedback that is heard a couple of times in the following seconds. George does do a quick wipe or scratch of his nose at the end there - but that is all I see.
From Lennon's opening rip, followed by Paul's scream; This is what rock and roll sounds like! No musical wanking, no extended, excessive solos, just gut-bucket rock and roll...All hail the Beatles, those wizards, and the "magical mystery tour'' that will still invite travelers for eons to come...
Watch George carefully. Yes, he was singing backup so a nearness to Paul was important but he makes no effort to be in proximity of John the whole take and occasionally holds his fingers near his nose which may or may not indicate a want of relief of other odor.
That being said I don't want to start an angry string because the vid & performance are brilliant. However, I've done some research and watched the vid and come to my own conclusion. To each his own belief. Imagine that.
Actually, he says "John smells like shit". Watch his behavior the rest of the shoot and imagine the things you do when your next to someone whose smell is testing your gag reflex. Putting his hand/finger near nose; Avoiding being near him and facing the other way. Watch it slowly. It's "smells like" not "monitor". Believe me.
An organ guitar? Think you confused with a Midi guitar that cam out in the 70's or 80's. You put it through a midi system like a Keyboard, it gave you synth sounds.
Love that distirted guitar sound. Who had a dirty guitar sound like that before they did Helter Skelter. The keyboards are awesome too. what was his name? I think the all rights are also on the backing track as there's one extra one right at the end.

@Ikaru1797 What a "Madison Avenue " perspective to have much less express .How about " The Beatles are the most important rock band in the history of the genre"- that, for anyone with a brain , would sum it up .
@Freyja1133 Nah, that's not why. It's because touring became unbearable. They were getting death threats and the sound systems in the stadiums were too weak for them to be able to hear themselves over all of the screams. It wasn't worth it anymore. Besides, the music they wrote at that point couldn't have been played live (without bringing along a whole entourage of musicians, that is). It just wasn't feasible to reproduce some of that stuff with the technology they had in the '60s.
@Freyja1133 they stop touring because paul died in 1966, and they replaced him with a fake. This guy here (Faul) is much taller and has a slimmer face. He underwent consistent plastic surgery to look like the real pau., plus had to pratice alot to learn his riffs.
@urbmatic the same dam'ned thing was said back in 1969...this is was a rumor that was started by a disc jockey
Oh come on, you don;t mean to tell me that you believe that cock& bull story?! PAul even set the record straight !... Mccartney was 5'10" or 5' 11" at the time
@Freyja1133 if u examine the evidence (which is plenty by the way) it is almost undeniable. First of all it was the beatles themselves (well the surviving ones) that started the rumours with numerous backmasking messages and pictorial images on the st. pepper, abbey and mystery tour albums, the disc jockey only caught up with it and spread it around. But if that is not enuff google 'james paul mccartney a tribute to the greatest genius. once on the site click on 'sito' on top of the page
@urbmatic When you already know exactly what you want to believe, it's easy to find "evidence." All you have to do is interpret everything to be supporting your point. The problem is that these interpretations are HUGE stretches.
xemily91; Its great to know there are young people out there like yourself who appreciate the genius' of the Beatles and their music era..Thanks for the comment !
omg I love this song. even though its older I still love the song and i'm only sixteen. Yea I wish I could have been around when they were singing live.
I saw them in Seattle on their 2nd US tour. And I mean "saw". You couldn't really hear them. What was great about that period was that the bands were all trying to outdo each other—the Beatles, the Stones, the Beach Boys, the Who, not to mention the more exotic bands like the Mothers of Invention, Arthur Brown, Velvet Underground. They were listening to Coltrane (the Byrds, "Eight miles high"), Varèse (Zappa), who knows what. Not the same stuff over and over.
Your definitly right Panicbeauty078 .I grew up back then and there was nothing like or could ever be as great as the Beatles.
The Beatles not only played great music but were also trend setters.Everybody including myself followed them in everything they did and said and was very influenced by them. The Beatles were a once in a lifetime treasure.!!!!
Thanks for your comment. Its so refreshing to know that there are young people like yourself out there who do recognize and appreciate great music of the past like the Beatles. You should be commended for your taste in music!!!! Beatles Forever !!!
i completley agree-there's noone like the Beatles. Noone can top them, not a chance. I absoultely love them...and i'm eighteen. Just kinda fell in love with the era, just amazing. =]
I'm only 18 and am completely obsessed with the beatles. i cant even imagine how amazing it had to have been to able to have grown up with this when they first came out! Music today is not even possibly comparible to this!
i am a 43 corn child..man i remember those days..rip george and john... you guys were what started rock to be more popular in the usa..then dylan, creedance, the doors, etc. became more..but your careers inspired just as many
Too bad Charlie Manson heard John sing the line sung here:
"But when you talk about destruction, Don't you know you that you can count me out - IN".
That, along with other Beatles songs convinced mad Charlie the Beatles were telling him to kill! Songwriters never know how their songs will end up being be interpreted and reacted to by thousands of
neurotic and psychotic listeners out there. It
can get scary. And was there something John sang that helped prompt his assassin to shoot him?
Now this is the CORRECT version. The original audio not the crummy stereo version so common. This one has the live vocals along with the cool background vocals and distortion which is what The Beatles wanted the song to sound like. Thanks so much for posting this proper version.
im a 1959 babe and lived by my dads obsession of the Beatles and yr absolutely right with wot u say....i could never get dad to see the beatles obviously but last nite took him to c the Bootleg beatles and he so loved it....a memory of the happiness on his face..he's 80..xx
I am so glad I was taught to love great music and not the crap we have nowadays! I love The Beatles, and this song rules! I even have it on a DVD, along with other rare videos.
A friend of my mom's knows I'm a huge Beatles fan, so he burnt me a dvd with performances. His dvd is also pirated, so I have no idea where the original thing came from or how the people made the original pirated copies.

Freyja1133 10 months ago
@Freyja1133 Nah, that's not why. It's because touring became unbearable. They were getting death threats and the sound systems in the stadiums were too weak for them to be able to hear themselves over all of the screams. It wasn't worth it anymore. Besides, the music they wrote at that point couldn't have been played live (without bringing along a whole entourage of musicians, that is). It just wasn't feasible to reproduce some of that stuff with the technology they had in the '60s.
1982pencil 9 months ago
@Freyja1133 they stop touring because paul died in 1966, and they replaced him with a fake. This guy here (Faul) is much taller and has a slimmer face. He underwent consistent plastic surgery to look like the real pau., plus had to pratice alot to learn his riffs.
urbmatic 5 months ago
@urbmatic the same dam'ned thing was said back in 1969...this is was a rumor that was started by a disc jockey
Oh come on, you don;t mean to tell me that you believe that cock& bull story?! PAul even set the record straight !... Mccartney was 5'10" or 5' 11" at the time
Freyja1133 5 months ago
@Freyja1133 if u examine the evidence (which is plenty by the way) it is almost undeniable. First of all it was the beatles themselves (well the surviving ones) that started the rumours with numerous backmasking messages and pictorial images on the st. pepper, abbey and mystery tour albums, the disc jockey only caught up with it and spread it around. But if that is not enuff google 'james paul mccartney a tribute to the greatest genius. once on the site click on 'sito' on top of the page
urbmatic 5 months ago
@urbmatic When you already know exactly what you want to believe, it's easy to find "evidence." All you have to do is interpret everything to be supporting your point. The problem is that these interpretations are HUGE stretches.

Best version. Great song, great video. I also like to look at it to remind me that each of them loved playing live at one time.

omg I love this song. even though its older I still love the song and i'm only sixteen. Yea I wish I could have been around when they were singing live.
StarAshley55 2 years ago 3
I saw them in Seattle on their 2nd US tour. And I mean "saw". You couldn't really hear them. What was great about that period was that the bands were all trying to outdo each other—the Beatles, the Stones, the Beach Boys, the Who, not to mention the more exotic bands like the Mothers of Invention, Arthur Brown, Velvet Underground. They were listening to Coltrane (the Byrds, "Eight miles high"), Varèse (Zappa), who knows what. Not the same stuff over and over.

And was there something John sang that helped prompt his assassin to shoot him?

strawberrypicker123 2 years ago
Now this is the CORRECT version. The original audio not the crummy stereo version so common. This one has the live vocals along with the cool background vocals and distortion which is what The Beatles wanted the song to sound like. Thanks so much for posting this proper version.

How'd you get it on DVD?
zerobox94 2 years ago
A friend of my mom's knows I'm a huge Beatles fan, so he burnt me a dvd with performances. His dvd is also pirated, so I have no idea where the original thing came from or how the people made the original pirated copies.
