Hello, My name is George and recently became a above knee amputee. I have been a firefighter/paramedic for the past 20 sum years and now am struggling with trying to do it still again. I noticed it looks as if you also have aka on the left side. What kind of knee do you use that works well with firefighting and can get wet?? also what kind of foot? Did you custom make your gear? If you can give me any kind of help i would be very greatfull. I am trying not to let this keep me down, thanks Geo.
Hey George, Im Jared. I have been on my volunteer fire dept for a little over three years now and I lost my left leg above the knee in August of 07. I actually have two legs, one for formal use and one for firefighting. I have a quick disconnect at the knee and I keep my fire leg in my boot. I just have a regular hydraulic for firefighting. Dont get down on yourself, as long as you have will you'll get back on. If you have any questions feel free to message me. Stay safe, Jared

I'm 18 I'v been on Swansea volunteer FD for two years and 5 months ago I lost my left leg above the knee in a car accident...I'v been going through therapy specifically to get back into firefighting and this video was such an inspiration and gave me so much hope to keep pushing. If anyone that has gone through this can contact me that would be great.
Since this video was posted, Joe has been able to complete the entire agility test which consists of what you saw on the video as well as hammering the sled, pulling a charged line, spraying water, and dragging a dummy - essentially the fire combat challenge. I'm so proud of what he been able to accomplish and I'm glad you found this video.
This is such an inspiration! My boyfriend is 20 and he is going through cancer and is having his leg amputated right after Christmas. This gives me so much hope! I actually found this video through his carepage. He is such an inspiration.
We just wanted to check on your boyfriend and see how he was recovering since his amputation. Joe lost his leg to cancer as well - a soft tissue sarcoma. If he ever wants or needs to talk, Joe is always willing - just let us know.
What a great video. When Joe came home and told me all he'd done at the station last night, I wished I had been able to see it. Thanks to you...I have!
Joe is currently the chief at Stonewall Jackson Volunteer Fire Department & Rescue Squad in Manassas, Virginia. He developed a mass on his leg in November of 2006 and was diagnosed with a soft tissue sarcoma in December of 2006. He went through three very aggressive rounds of chemotherapy and when that didn't work, he chose to have his left leg amputated above the knee on March 9, 2007. What's your story?
