Angie Harmon is a great actress, she did a great job playing the unstable mother in this movie, Eve was horribly evil to those kids, but she scared the crap out of me in this movie, she still gives me goosebumps.

One parent will hurt the children for their own amusement or for medical attention or whatever, usually the other parent does not have a clue it is their spouse. All I meant by "denial" is people can delude themselves if they want to badly enough, hence the phrase "blinded by love".  The same applies to fear. That's the theory, anyway.
