  • DSG LOL !

  • its your gear selector

  • check your linkage where your shift cables connect to the tranny . That and check your gear oil. Could be an issue that your low or the oil meeds to be replaced. Also make sure the shift cable brackets are tight and the rubber grommets are good.

  • kup se kurwo jebana smaru troche i zdejmij mieszek nasmaruj tą plastikową kulę i po problemie włoska kurwo :)

  • @syncro188 To tylko ostatni okres jednego miesiąca .. kurwo ;)

  • The biggest problem here is that the car is a Volkswagen. The entire VW fleet is problematic, high-maintenance, and expensive to fix and fix often.

  • @madhatter0110

The bushings are all worn-out. Did you expect that Teflon bearings would last forever?!?

My GTI has 100,000 and now the bushings are showing some side-to-side play. Expensive? I don't think so.

Wanna go cheap? Walk! VWs is precision German engineering, not for the Honda Civic crowd.

  • @flurry Just ask any VW owner how often their vehicle is being serviced. Especially Golf, Jetta, and Beetle owners. This wear is normal by VW standards but premature for a vehicle by any other manufacturer.

  • @madhatter0110

I do own one, and don't tell what you want to hear. Besides, this issue here is about worn bushings, not to cater your personal and biased hate against VW. Go find anger venting elsewhere. Pleace post for impossible to verify "facts" in a forum.

  • @flurry Impossible to verify? Dealership service records are verifiable.

  • @madhatter0110

Impossible to correlate against other brands!

    1. Honda owners go for chinese knockoffs and ghetto shops after the warranty expires. So much for "service records".

    2. Ford: Check out the junkyards and count how many odious AXO 4-speed auto crappy trannys rusting till kingdom come. Repair costing more than the whole car. Built like a Rock, but put together by Neanderthals.

Correlate that with how many 1J0 VW trans (the one on this video) you see piling beyond repair. Zero!

  • @flurry Correlation between other brands is not only possible but has been successfully done. Most Honda owners religiously use their dealer for service--the "Chinese knockoff and ghetto shops" crowd represents a very small minority of Honda owners. Aside from a couple models (pre 1996 Taurus/Sable and Contour/Mystique) Ford transmissions are almost indestructible. The vast majority of Fords I see in junkyards are due to accident or over 200,000 miles. See just as many VW's in junkyards.

  • @madhatter0110

You're going too far as to keep justifying your biased hate for VW.

Let it go. The part is worn. Just replace it. Period.

  • @madhatter0110

FYI: I have 3 friends who owns 2005-06 Honda Civics, and they all had replaced their flimsy CV joints at least once. Not just the dust covers, but the whole assembly! Cheap? Yeah right.

Meanwhile, my "problematic" 2002 VW Golf GTI (with twice the torque of any Honda) still has the factory-installed front-end and now the passenger side CV joint rubber BOOT is wearing out.

Not bad for a "problematic" fleet? Maybe you don't know really about cars and should stick to lazy Honda.

  • @flurry We may be in agreement that the Honda fleet of vehicles is a bit overpriced and overrated but at least Hondas aren't being serviced once or twice a month for issues that occur in no other vehicle manufacturer. Personally, I feel Ford currently makes the best cars on the planet and they're even affordable.

  • @madhatter0110

    On Honda we agree.

The biggest lemon I owned was a 87 Taurus. Steering wheel had more play than a 57 Bel Air, the brakes failed every week (braking only from the rear) and every time the wire mess under the fan guard was dsiturbed a bit it radically changed idle, died or shuddered like mad.

Thank God I kept my 71 VW Beetle in those days!

Like the Civic, no Taurus (except the SHO) will ever reach Collectible Status. Why?

'cause "What you buy cheap ends up in the trash heap."

  • @flurry Starting around 2004 Ford really turned itself around for the much better. Not to mention the Taurus was primarily designed for rental and fleet use. 25 years ago GM was slightly better and Toyota/Honda were much better than Ford and Chrysler. These days Toyota is almost as bad as Chrysler and VW, Honda is decent just overrated and overpriced, Kia/Hyundai are slowly improving, and Ford produces the most reliable and desired cars on the planet.

  • @madhatter0110

So everybody is better except VW? Then why VW is the 3rd biggest carmaker in the whole world?

You still say that a worn Teflon bearing, made by DuPont using the same recipe for everybody else, was supposed to last forever sliding gears and not wearing out as is was meant to be; and if it doesnt then its because VWs are plain bad and everybody else's not the case.

Please provide proof of ANY make where its gear lever bearing lasted over 8 years and 100,000 miles of driving.

  • @flurry 3rd biggest car maker in the whole world means nothing when it comes to quality. If sheer quantity of cars produced is your measuring stick then GM is better and Toyota is the best. I've owned two manual transmission cars that went over 100,000 miles without ANY need for any form of transmission service. Went over 150K in a 1991 Chevrolet Cavalier before it was retired due to an accident and sold a 1997 Ford Escort with 127K with everything working 100% no clutch no nothing ever done.

  • DIY-Stiff Gear Change Solution Non Adjustable 1.4 And 1.6 Golfs SOLVED

  • I'TS A CLASSIC PROBLEM WITH A LOT VW CARS. YOU NEED TO CHANGE THE FLATDISC OF YOUR GEARBOX BEFORE IT BREAK IT! AND ONE USEFUL ADVISE VW GEARBOXES ARE WORKING BETTER WHEN ARE GET WARM. NEVER SPEED UP TO MUCH WITH COLD ENGINE AND TRY NOT TO PUSH THE SHIFTER WITH FORCE SPEED ! :]

  • I think you should lubricate the gearbox WD-40 :PPP

  • golf gearboxes are fucking shit defo a load of crap and made of chocolate

  • @greg4959 GTFO fan boy.

  • WD-40 :)

  • WD-40 :)

  • WD-40 :)

  • WD-40 :)

  • was it the linkage or something next to the foks in the transmission?

somethimes when something bad happens the tranny casing breaks in soemewhere causing the movement of the forks to face resistance where its cracking up..

  • move that leather and you will see a little spring

    thats the problem ;)

  • Could be the shifter rod which slides in and out of the top of the gear box, on the side to side movement the shift rod should move forwards and backwards.

  • golful unui prieten face tot asa.

  • whats the problem? if the gears are ok? dont be a lazy ass nd just move it

  • @michael9196 stick the gear shifter in your ass before you called other's "lazy ass"!

  • Mine is having the same problem recently, but is not as severe as yours. I've lubricated the ball joint of t he gear selector, it helps a bit, but after a long drive, it still will not return to the neutral position as solid as when it is cold. I suspect the "gate selector" cable is causing the problem, because both cables are very close to the exhaust, so the problem becomes very noticable after a long drive after the heat is built up in that area.

  • Friend of mine has the same problem, only not as severe. Should be the gear linkage. It's fine when its being driven though. Also bearing in mind its got 107k miles.

  • change the roads of the gearbox

  • bushings

  • you definately need to sort out the gear linkage. that will sort of the gear play in neutral. it might also fix your problem.

  • it happened in my jetta once, but i found out that it was my shift linkage. It didn't have anything to do with those hip joints on mine... but idk

that one bolt in the middle of the selector might be too tight?

  • the same problem was on my uncles vw sharan tdi i use a good grease spray all joint i find i greased it goes very fine to shift and very easy than before and shift knob cames back

  • do all the gears work or only 3rd and 4th? i had one of the "hip joints" come off on the top of the gearbox

  • Gears work fine but when it gets warm it moves hard like this^.

This problem is few years old is embarrassing now but I know 95% what caused this .... I unmounted and cleaned and greased most of the hip joints and it worked nicely for few weeks even in very hot days but after few rains it moved hard again, I am sure that grease washed away while driving in rainy days. The cover under the engine is just partial on this gas engine/model and water gets close to gearbox linkage.

  • asa facea si la mine, tot golf 4 si mi s-a dus cutia pana la urma

  • sé dla marde ton char vaut pas plus que 200$

  • mda, tot am inteles.

  • sé dla marde sa veut pas plus que 200$ dla bouette

  • oil change to the tranny.. that should fix it..

  • That could be a cause, but in this case I changed oil few times already.

  • Motor? 1,4l 16V or 1,6l 8V/16V...i had the same problem! just put some "WD 40" xDDD oh god ..how should i say...put some grease on your gear box ...it will be better ;) I hope you know what i mean ^^

    Greez from Germany ;)

  • WD40 is some kind of degreaser, not grease.

  • ok...just try it with a bit grease on you gear box ropes ...i don't know what it is in englisch ;)

  • You mean on the gearbox cables, right? This one is with metal linkage, not cables :)

  • Yes you're right ;)....wenn it's cold it works perfect..but when it's hot...25°+ it's very hard to shift ;)

  • arcu....de la cutie

  • dont mention vw gearboxs aaaaaahhhhhgggg!i now know that there is a copper rivet near the final drive that shears off and can cause all sorts of problems.a clever time bomb to get you spending at a vw garage perhaps?i mean copper rivets in a gearbox made by amongst the best engineers in the world!!!??? come off it vw!!!

  • VW make rubbish and always have, people get mixed up with bulkyness and heavyness and perceive a product to be well engineered when it's not. It's not just VW of course all German car makers (german makers of anything else for that matter) make overrated crap that doesnt last the distance. I know this goes against the grain but I am speaking from experience...

  • had this on my golf. if you go under the bonnet ther are 2 plastic (hip joints) they pop off.

  • Nothing looks wrong to you ? :)

  • is your car a gti?my mate had the same problem and it turned out to be the gear selector!hope this helps

  • the thing with golfs is that the gearbox is connected to the gearstick with a set of handles and joints, (most of the joints are made of plastic) and they should be checked every 6 months or so, I had a Mk3 for almost 10 years and had to change the whole system 3 times... is not so expensive tho! but fix it now cuz I didnt when it behaved like yours and I was going on the freeway at 120 when it got stuck in the 4th gear... almost crashed.

  • so?whats the problem??? bigger problem is that you dont have klimatronic :))

  • The car still has the issues in summer.

(The gearbox, not the climatronic) :)

  • Un poco de engrase...

  • gearbox, gearknob

  • i got a Golf mk4 GTI ( 1.8 20valve Turbo 150ps - 210 nm ) and i don't have any problems at all i never drove such a fine car like this and i am a VW mechanic to

the thing is to keep your VW nice and give it his service on time and you will see its a fine car.

  • this is what you get when the car hasent been treated proprly , its not a gearbox problem , its a slave cylider , change that and everything is fixed, or just grease and replace washers , easy job, happened to my mk4 golf 2.0 8 v 115 bhp ( slow!)

  • I test drove a used 2000 2.0 jetta that had the same problem, my first and only guess is the trans oil, and maybe some grease under the shifter.

  • thx for replying :)

  • hey I really like golf r 32 and friend of my have this car, he said that gearbox broke twice he got it fixed on warranty but when your warranty is expired youre fuc..d is it pretty common in r32s? 2003 ? or his model was some kind of defect...

  • I dont know. The R32 has another gearbox, the engine in this video is half the size of the R32 :)

  • I 've golf Iv.Have the serial problem too. Hard to shift into 1,2,and 3. It's the Germans ignominy. Shame on them.

  • I got the same problem too. I got a vw golf 4 1.9 sdi and I recognize this problem.

  • This is a VERY common problem :) I am surprised they could not fix it correctly first time at VW since they probably see many of these each month.

Well... let us know if you fix it and what was wrong in your case.

  • I think it's a oil problem. I had the problem last summer (normaly the oil is more thin than in the winter), but now it's winter here in Holland and the gearbox don't stick like in the movie.. Strange.. If the motor is cold, no problem, but when it's getting hot the problem starts.

  • hmm can u give in 1 an 2 and in 5 and R

  • Yes, I can get it into all steps. Again... now when it is winter it works smooth even after the car ran for a long time. I will have to check again in summer.

  • There are two possibilities in your case. First there is a turn back spring inside the gearbox tha it's broker, or your gear selector bar has aturn back spring that it is broken that too...

  • I don't know ... it doesn't do that unless engine is headed and its hot outside too, in winter it works perfect even if engine is very hot. Also gearbox was open twice for other reasons, I think they might have noticed a broken spring (if it is visible).

  • That's strange... Do you tryied to ose a different tpe of gearbox oil in summer?

  • I didn't tried different types of oils, I am not sure it would help, I changed oil 2 times, last time I put some Mobil 1 gearbox oil that the shop recommended for this car. I do not know what kind of oil was the first.

  • It's not a gearbox problem... It's just the gers selector bar got loose... Buy another one...

  • Where is the gear selector bar? Are you refering to the linkage outside of the gearbox? from the gearbox to the stick? or inside the geatbox? The parts outside of the gearbox are new, I will have to see in summer if it still does this, because on winter it always works ok.

  • Hi, I am from Timisoara and I have the same car (2001, 1.6, 16v, AUS) and I have the same problem with the gearbox. Where did you managed to fix it ? At what service ?

  • MotorradRo, I'm from Timisoara too.

Volkswagen (Quark Motors in 'Zona Soarelui' area) fixed it a bit, it was not perfect but it was better. Now after a while it is back as it was (moving hard again when engine is warm). I think they put oil on some components between stick and gearbox and now oil is gone, a service said that those parts get heated and oil prevents that. We should talk to get both of them fixed somehow. Just don't NEVER-EVER-EVER take it to "ProMotor" service :)

  • MotorradRo and AdrianTNT i have the same pb and i`m from Bucharest, it seams that this type have this problem and i don`t know how to fixit, now when is cold outside is ok but when the engine heats and outside is hot i have the same problem , someone told me that the problem is the termal isolation under the shifing stick

  • I am thinking at another cause... VW in Timisoara fixed it once but it was temporary. I am thinking that it is because I am missing the large plastic cover under the engine, between the front wheels, I think water gets to the shifting linkage and the oil/grease gets washed out and then when it is heated the linkage moves hard. I will have another mechanic look at it. I seen so many people with this problem.

  • Yo Adrian! Yeah, Just tell them they can shove that sensor up their arse. Just do the work yourself & try using some Loctite Threadlocker. Good Luck.

  • Your shift linkage on your tranny is loose, had both of mine pop off... PM me on the vortex if you want some explanations, my S/N is o0bur.

  • a sensor for the temerature guage? ive got a problem with that. ive got a mk4 golf 1.6L works sweet. havent had problems with gear box yet. ill wait and see in the years to come lol

    oh and mines a 1999

  • Do you know the gearbox code/model for 1.6L Golf 4?

  • hey mate, na i dont, im not sure how i can figure that out, but my mates a lisenced service man for all VW makes. im flat out with work myself. but if u can give me some time, i will get back to u with some info if i can.

  • If you could find the gearbox code, the 3 letter one would be great, I think there is a second longer code to. The car is 2001 Golf 4 1.6L 16V, AUS engine code. Thank you.

  • And gearbox is 5 speed manual with stick.

  • I had exactly the same problem 5 years ago. The VW service made some adjustments as you said (between stick and gearbox).

The car worked better but in a month the problem was the same, same adjustment again and the problem persist. They told me to change all the gearbox (7000 euros!!!) and, of course, i didnt do it. Now the gearbox still works, not perfect, but better than 5 years ago... I think is a "discomfort" manufacture default but i hope that the gearbox resist for a lot of years.

  • 7000 Euros ? :O or maybe 700? I found some second-hand gearboxes for about 350-400 euros. I have another problem where the gearbox makes loud noises when going in reverse but it works fine like that for one and half years :)

  • They said me that they can´t use second hand gearboxes . Only worked with new ones. And yes, 7000 more or less... That was the last time i have gone to an official VW service. If someday the gearbox crash (i hope no), i will look for a second hand one.

  • A new gearbox doesnt worth 7000 euros, my complete car* was 7300 Euros. 9000$ for a gearbox, they must be stupid, but I am not surprised, VW asked me to pay $1000 for a sensor that costs 50$.

  • i got the same problem

  • I went to a non-VW service and they said I need to go to an official VW service, they have a special tool that calibrates some metal plates under the stick, they ware 100% sure that is the problem, If I do not forget I get back here and let you know what the VW service done, I have an appointment this Friday.

  • ok, i'll wate and see.

  • niceboySWE, I took the car from the VW service today, all it needed was some adjustments, I think somewhere between stick and gearbox itself. It's not really perfect now but works much better. It is not expensive eider. I think they didnt even bill me for this speciffic adjustment.

  • Hi guys, this is not an oil problem.

I changed the gearbox oil one year ago because my 1992 mk3 (1H1 ABD engine) with 200,000.00 km (200.000 km) had the same problem of the video. After changing oil the car runs well for approx 3 weeks and then the problem comes out again.

The reverse gear sometimes won't go in, even if I shift in first or any other sinchronized gear, there is no way to put reverse gear.

But if I put first gear and move the car for 10cm then is possible to put reverse gear.
