The thing is, the movie that she was talking about is called "Day for night" not "day and night" and it wasnt even nominated for best picture, it just won best foreign film. actually it's your research that is inaccurate, because the film "day for night" was nominated in 1974 for best foreign language film and also won that year. valentina cortese was not nominated that year for her role in "day for night", but one year later in 1975 (as you can see and hear in the clip) .

I always loved her accent. That makes me think of that scene in "Notorious", when Cary Grant finds Bergman in bed near the end of the film. She says, almost with resignation, "they're poisoning me".
