I must say, I absolutely love Buddy Riches drumming, But I can honestly say I wouldn't ever want to meet him in person. He seems like a class A prick.
VINNIE COLAIUTA IS THE HEIR APPARENT TO BUDDY'S GENIUS. BUDDY SET THE STANDARD. HE WAS NOT TRYING TO GET RICH AND GET FAMOUS. HE WAS PASSIONATELY BEING HIMSELF AND FAME AND FORTUNE FOUND HIM.
It takes raw unadulterated talent to do what Buddy did on live TV. And look at the drums they had set up for him! Looks like a 1970's Pearl kit LOL! I mean the people on the tonight show had no respect for Buddy's genius making him play on a cheap kit like that they should have kept a BR kit in the back for him. Actually, Slingerland or Ludwig (I'm not sure who he was with @ the time) should have paid the man a little more attention! It's no wonder he such a bitch all the time (don't blame him).
Buddy seems to be uncomfortable and very random the whole conversation. It being the 70s I'm sure he might have had a little cocaine before he went on that night or somethin. And I wonder if he was saying "you guys can't read" to the band or the audience.Probably the band cuz any other Carson appearance they come in at the end of the solo.
@bergerfry Do you say that in what sense? Thats difficult to precise. Joe Jones was charisma personified, you could almost feel his happyness in the air while playing. Truely phenomenal - and he was quite a technician too -, but I don't think hes up there with Buddy regarding Buddy's style of playing. I don't think anyone really IS up there though.
@cadaverr I meant that of all the drummers with technical skills, Papa was the closest to being able to keep up with Buddy. Nobody really comes close to what Buddy was capable of but Papa was in my opinion closer than any one.
@bergerfry@bergerfry Hmmm, for me, Morello was closer to Buddy than Jo Jones. The latter was excellent when it comes to doing press rolls, but when full, loud, fast, clean and effortless rudiments (mainly singles) are concerned, Jo Jones leaves something to be desired if constrated to Buddy's take-no-prisioners-like kind of approach to the drums and drum solos in general. But thats ok as this is only my own opinion based on my own observations anyway. Opinions will always vary.
@cadaverr Buddy is the exception to "there is no best". After that it is only who you like that is the best because there really isn't a best. There are so many that are so good. Drums, Guitars, comedians, cooks, spouses, etc.
@bergerfry Stanley Jordan is the exception to "there is no best" among guitar players. If you haven't heard of him, I strongly suggest you check him out.
This is a tense interview! Buddy really doesn't like talking about Lana Turner here does he! Ive read the book on Buddys life by Mel Torme and he goes into the whole Lana Turner/Buddy relationship in some detail and how she broke his heart. He just seems to be agitated and jumpy. I was just wondering, at the end of his solo he looks really pissed off with the band as he throws his sticks down...was it because they did not come in at the end with him?? What ye think folks?
Wow, it's good that he was an amazing drummer because as funny as he tries to be it really comes off poorly. Like Johnny said "I don't even know why I try talking to you, nothing you say makes any sense." It really doesn't.
Pot might well have been his recreational drug. But you cannot perform to Buddy's level whilst under the influence. Plus you must remember that 'prohibition' was in force back in Buddy's teens. So perhaps his mojo was without alcohol!
I think Buddy was just a neurotic, not a coker. Can you imagine him doing a solo, while all skied up? Holy shit! THAT would have been something to see. In fact, a coked up, long haired rocker version of Buddy would be Ian Paice of Deep Purple doing "The Mule".
Hey fatso, as long as you live your life in mom's basement, ungrateful for the things she had to do for a fat pig son like you, then you have no right to throw around insults at professional musicians for whom you obviously are jealous of. I never posted anything about you. Shit, I never knew you existed until you posted this shit exposing yourself for the depressed fat pig you are. Get a life.
I you weren't so HIGH right now, you'd probably have much better reading comprehension. That video is not me. I am the person FILMING it. That's explained pretty clearly in the text. And fat? Hardly. Fitness freak is more like it, and I'll kick your ass any day of the week. Funny thing is, I bet the 'fatso' in the video would, too. I'll be happy to let you find out for yourself.
@AllStarBugler Hey dumbass -- the photo IS the video. It's just a still frame from the lone video I've uploaded. And I will kick your ass. Simply tell me where you'd like to meet up. Potheads are horrible fighters. You'll never know what hit you, anyway.
You seem to have anger management issues. All I did was comment on someone elses Buddy Rich video and you started in with your ranting about pot and kicking ass. Why doncha jump off a cliff asswipe.
@Yuadio Pot has been overhyped as a BAAAAD thing, and I think you're thinking of Gene Krupa's famous story.
but seriously, it's nowhere NEAR as bad for you as cigarettes, and alcohol. plus it actually HELPS people who are in pain, and it's much better for them than meds from the pharmaceutical companies (one reason it hasn't become a widely prescribed medicine)
If your opinion of Buddy Rich has changed simply because he smoked pot , then you are an idiot . As for why your opinions about pot are idiotic , I invite you to re-read the post from sgtpepper1138 .
I'm surprised that buddy played a 5 piece set of cheap Imported drums , they sound bad too. Most of the time he had his own drums. Ludwig or Slingerland four piece set up.
Just finished the book "Traps the Drum Wonder - The Buddy Rich Story", as written by Mel Torme one of Buddy's closet friends. He did, in fact smoke pot - and a lot of it, or as he called it "boo". Not quite sure why ever one here is getting so excited about here - he was a musician for crying out loud - not a preist or a kindergarten teacher. Regardless of his personal life choices, he was still the greatest man behind the tubs....
the fact that he was a musician should not be an excuse to give him a "pass" for smoking pot. EVERYONE should be given a "pass: because the law is an unjust, evil law designed by white racist capitalists like William R. Hearst and Harry Anslinger. BUDDY RICH WAS LIVING PROOF THAT POT IS HARMLESS AND SHOULD BE LEGALIZED AGAIN!!!
i actually met Buddy in the summer of 1984. He was playing at a music festival in the city I live in. He was having a cigarette before the show, and he was outside the backstage area. I went up and called him Mr. Rich and I extended my hand and he shook it. He was very cool with me. I asked about his friendship with Carl Palmer. I think because I called him Mr. Rich and was respectful that that resulted in him being so nice to talk to. Man was I in heaven the rest of the day. And I was only 17.
Buddy was high octane people...he smoked pot, which is not a secret,he wasn't a drinker at all,an more then likely didn't us speed, coke etc.He didn't rely on to many tricks either...just sheer agility, drive an passion. He was truly blessed to be a drummer and keep in mind...he never practiced. Now thats talent..simple,pure and raw.
I remember seeing him a while ago, loved his drumming and thought he was cool ,looked him up, found out he was dead, I was so upset. I was young too. Like 8 years old.
