I think it is may be not so adequate for westerners to do videos about Bulgaria's past, although I appreciate the interest they show, since they are not fully aware of all the factors shaping our history. But the real tragedy is that the Bulgarians themselves are just as far, if not even further, from the truth about their own past, as westerners. I guess things have happened too soon, and we need more time to assimilate.

As an American who lived in Bulgaria for almost three years (both in a village and in Sofia) and has a master's degree in Balkan studies, this documentary does a pretty good job of explaining how Bulgaria came to be the way it is today. It describes the lost hope of Bulgarians who are trying to transition into a new system. My only complaint is that, I think, they used Serbian music. It seemed a little out of place. Vsi4ko hubavo! Obi4am Bulgariq!
For me the Goran Bregovič music is a perfect choice and right on place. It shows this balkan craziness in the craziest moments(like the footage from Pozitano street).
The serbian music was pretty popular by the time there was no chalga - check the video "A Dramatic Landing, 1990" on youtube.
We will always be dissapointed as long as we hope other countries to help us. Also for how long Bulgaria will be small and poor country in Eastern Europe for the world and even for ourselfs? I think Bulgaria had difficult time recently but also never forget the time when we were great power. If we ressurect our spirit that led us to such greatness before it will lead us again! I can sympathise with this view, but it's not really true. Capitalism, with proper controls put in place so that it serves the people (not JUST the rich) is an excellent system. What we have today, foremost in America, is a sort of digusting, dehumanising hypercapitalism where the individual is reduced a unit of consumption, something more material and despiritualized than the most fervent commie could have ever dreamed.
Even though communism is criticized for being a utopian theory I believe that there's no bigger utopia than the dream of a "fair capitalism". If a system is based on profit and private property no matter the measures you take or the laws you vote it'll always tend to be unfair and unbalanced. We may pass through periods of "smooth capitalism" but the final destination of this system will always be this violent, dehumanising, wild capitalism.

Yeah, I've seen too, too many people benefit from capitalism-- simple, working-class people, with a little talent and intelligence, make lots of money, if they worked five days a week, didn't waste their money, saved, invested. The "invisible hand of greed" that pushes the working class needs no think-thank(s). Small businesses that grow from taking risks, who then employ more and more of the working class need no think tank(s). My neighborhood is a realization of the workers' utopia: large ,3-4 bedroom homes, pools, two, three nice cars/trucks, speedboats, garages full of power-tools, ski-jets. These workers are employed, well-paid. Restaurants are full. I see no economic turmoil.

I think it is may be not so adequate for westerners to do videos about Bulgaria's past, although I appreciate the interest they show, since they are not fully aware of all the factors shaping our history. But the real tragedy is that the Bulgarians themselves are just as far, if not even further, from the truth about their own past, as westerners. As an American who lived in Bulgaria for almost three years (both in a village and in Sofia) and has a master's degree in Balkan studies, this documentary does a pretty good job of explaining how Bulgaria came to be the way it is today. It describes the lost hope of Bulgarians who are trying to transition into a new system. My only complaint is that, I think, they used Serbian music. It seemed a little out of place. Vsi4ko hubavo! I can sympathise with this view, but it's not really true. Capitalism, with proper controls put in place so that it serves the people (not JUST the rich) is an excellent system. What we have today, foremost in America, is a sort of digusting, dehumanising hypercapitalism where the individual is reduced a unit of consumption, something more material and despiritualized than the most fervent commie could have ever dreamed.

Even though communism is criticized for being a utopian theory I believe that there's no bigger utopia than the dream of a "fair capitalism". If a system is based on profit and private property no matter the measures you take or the laws you vote it'll always tend to be unfair and unbalanced. We may pass through periods of "smooth capitalism" but the final destination of this system will always be this violent, dehumanising, wild capitalism.

Not if you put controls on the rich so they can't abuse power. Sadly, what this entails scares the shit out of people because it basically comes close to ... eek.. 'national socialism.' But it's the truth. Fact is, modern capitalism is 'unfair' because the races of mankind are unequal and blacks will always finish at the bottom (and commit all the crimes -- somewhat inaccurately -- credited to poverty). USA, Brazil, UK, everywhere, same story. 'Diversity' is BS. Homogeneity is king.

Yeah, I've seen too, too many people benefit from capitalism-- simple, working-class people, with a little talent and intelligence, make lots of money, if they worked five days a week, didn't waste their money, saved, invested. It is an empowering system, with all it's faults, for millions and millions, igoring the criminals at the top.

The "invisible hand of greed" that pushes the working class needs no think-thank(s). Small businesses that grow from taking risks, who then employ more and more of the working class need no think tank(s). My neighborhood is a realization of the workers' utopia: large ,3-4 bedroom homes, pools, two, three nice cars/trucks, speedboats, garages full of power-tools, ski-jets. These workers are employed, well-paid. Restaurants are full. I see no economic turmoil.

Capitalism existed in Soviet Russia, whether they pretended to realize it or not. True Socialism depends on a planned economy which is too simplistic. You can go for a range of capitalism and democratic socialism, adjusting the degree of both and get success. We don't have raw capitalism here. Recent socialist agenda in Adjustable Rate Mortgages has caused great problems, here, not capitalism.

Nice movie though, I think that the main goal of the movie is to show americans, what the hell is going on down there. For an american documentary it's kind of good, I'm even surprised. It's always strange to see your nation from another point of view. Remark, everybody, almost speaks english...

Дело в том, что большинство из россиян сегодня завидуют болгарам: за то что они все таки продвинулись, и хоть и болезненно, избавляются от объятия "Большого Медведя". Так вот они уже в богатом клубе Евросоюза, а про НАТО и говорить не стоить.
