In the beginning, Mr. Johnson was a huge pain in the ass as you will see in a few of these "grover the waiter" segments. Later on, I believe that grover purposely messed up his orders getting revenge on Mr. Johnson lol
Okay two things I caught in this. First Fat Blue says he has no idea why he keeps on coming to this place. Grover says that it's ONLY his second day. Not sure if Fat Blue just gets dumb waiters, or if that was a line flub. Then the second thing I caught was when Grover was going back to get the pickle. He said I'll go get you another pickle...then he quickly changes to I mean I'll go get you a pickle... So I wonder if Frank flubbed and did a quick ad-lib, or if that was in the script?
@panda374: No one knows for sure, but a lot of names that get "mentioned in passing" on Sesame Street are in-joke references to people on the production staff. (Wonder if there was a Grace on the staff back in the early 70s?)
@ZeY00T00b: Fat Blue is the name of the Muppet pattern used for this character (and some others)--not the name of the character himself. (A later Grover sketch, which involved a mix-up over singing telegrams, revealed that Grover's frustrated customer is named Mr. Johnson.)
@hoopersghost ;-) I know, I was just chiming in with the whole 'Old Skool Sesame Street was so much better not this PC nonsense nowadays' sentiment one finds on most of these old videos' comments...
Was this the first ever skit between Grover and Fat Blue? If so, that would be a funny idea, if it started off with Fat Blue as the annoying one and Grover was the victim, only for later episodes to switch it around. XD
I'd like to play a part like that in a tv series, to play a character who starts off as a victim but later becomes the kindly antagonist. lol
@Kelaiah01 Actually, the first Waiter Grover skit was one involving an Alphabet Soup (you see, everytime Grover would bring the soup, Mr. Johnson would complain that one letter was missing).
It seemed like fat blue was giving grover a hard time first. I don't know why some people think fat blue is getting back at grover. It's obvious that fat blue was the one who was giving grover a hard first not the other way around.
The only other time before this was when Mr. Johnson asked for 2 eggs + 2 strips of bacon, then 1 egg + 3 strips of bacon, then 4 strips of bacon + no eggs. Finally, Mr. Johnson asked for 2 hot dogs + 2 pickles because Grover took so long in bringing his breakfast. Grover slowly took the tray in the kitchen and smashed the dishes, yelling incohearently.. The same muppets were present, so why isn't that classic waiter clip up on YouTube, yet?
About the throwing a tantrum part at the end, I work at a restaurant Steak n Shake for five years and if I do that, I'll be fired. I think Charlie will fire Grover.
It seems that Grover was so mad in which he yelled and screamed, and then threw a tantrum in the kitchen throwing dishes and telling Charlie that he wanted to quit his Waiter Job all due to the fact that Fat Blue's lunch was over just after Grover got his order right.
It was probably an "All you can eat buffet", as why he couldn't take the order with him. When the waiter gets his order right: "i gotta go, lunch hour's over"
Why couldn't Mr. Johnson/Fat Blue ask Grover to put the sandwich, potato chips, pickle and olive in a take out/to go container and then eat the sandwich at a later time? Leaving the sandwich uneaten is such a waste.
If you will notice carefully, there was no toothpick spearing the olive to the sandwich, as on the picture. Grover brought a sandwich with the olive just sitting on top.
Yes, I was aware of the toothpick omission when I saw this segment as a little kid. I always lamented that Mr. Johnson didn't call Grover's attention to it. That said, it's clear that Johnson was deliberately torturing Grover: he could've pointed out all the omissions at once, and saved Grover the trouble of going in and out of the kitchen several times. But Johnson was getting a sadistic kick out of driving Grover nuts, and to top it off, he made it all for naught.
they wouldn't show the muppets today act the way Grover did at the end of the skit, the parents of kids today would overreact and tell Sesame Street to ban the skit or something.
Definitely--no one wants to see kidvid characters act like anything but perfect angels today. I miss Sesame Street's emotional honesty; skits like this show that even adults can have bad days and lose patience. (Grover is playing an adult role after all!)
Even after Grover got the olive it still didn't look the same, the stem was missing.
Also, even if Grover had gotten it perfect the first time, the guy would have to down everything in one bite in order to make it back to work in time.
So this is the skit where Grover snaps and goes havoc in the kitchen. It's oddly humbling to see our "furry blue pal Grover" suffer such a violent rage. Then again, with Mr Johnson's attitude, maybe he deserved an outlet. Mr Johnson could have been more definite and pointed out ALL the things that were missing in one!
This skit demonstrates the genius of the Sesame Street writers of the 70's. They wrote these skits so that adults would be entertained also. Therefore, adults would watch Sesame Street with their kids. I wonder how many adults would laugh at Fat Blue because they knew someone like him at work (possibly their boss!).
DID YOU KNOW: Grover is one of 2 muppet characters on Sesame Street that is written to represent the psycological aspect of a 4 year old child, the other is Snuffy
it'd be nice if fat blue had say everything that was wrong all at once (chips, pickles, olive). Then he'd have time to eat. Hell, at least grover got a good workout!
Either Mr. Johnson was going on a date, or he had a job interview with someone named Grace, or maybe his best friend is named Grace (he did say on one Sesame Street episode inside Hooper's Store that he has a best friend, so maybe her name was Grace) or maybe Grace is the name of his wife (Grover did mention on the movie theater refreshment stand skit about his wife, so maybe her name was Grace).
Yes you're right. That's an excellent point, especially Fat Blue said at 2:03 that he only had a few minutes left. Maybe he had a job interview with someone who is a friend of his named Grace where he was practicing on how to speak at his job interview because at 0:37-0:41, he said "hello Grace." Maybe the reason why he didn't get it wrapped to go because, they probably don't do take outs. If Fat Blue didn't have time, he should've gone to a fast food restaurant without Grover around.
They did a fast food joke where the food came SPEEDING by at like 20 miles per hour..or less. Look it up its just has Fast Food in its name. Grover Fast Food something.
Yes I saw that skit. That skit took place in a fast food restaurant called "O'Brien's Fast Food" but, the title of the YouTube skit is called "O'Grover The Fast Food O'Waiter."
