I'll just guess David handed the song to James because it was more suited to his voice. David had a great voice for ballads, but James could sing ANYTHING! Reminds me of Elvis Presley in that way - not that he sounded anything like Elvis, but just that both could handle any and every kind of song.
I like to think of it as a reconciliation between David and Jim. As we (they) age, hearts soften. I don't know that it is, but I like to think of it as that way.
Great re-union of the band though everyone has passed away now but David Gates survives and today's 70 y.o. birthday,,Happy Birthday old man from Tulsa!!!
