There was peace (of a sort) before US troops went to Afghanistan. So what was the strategy? It clearly wasn't to gain what already existed, was it. No the reason for going to Afghanistan was stated to be the closure of Al Qaeda bases and the killing and capture of their people. Especially their leadership.

I reckon Sun Tzu would have slaughtered those Taliban without a second thought. He wouldn't send his men into battle constrained by 'hearts and minds' considerations.
