the first thing that crossed my mind when i heard marius was ahh thats what he is supposed to sound like. not nick jonas... he sounded constipated most of the time.
If you don't like this musical you have no ears and the I.Q. of a peanut. We(the public) are lucky to have a musical like this when we need inspiration
@WaileaWilly1 That's being a bit harsh, isn't it? It's a strong musical, for sure, but with everything, there are always reasons to dislike it (In this case, I'd point out the lyrics aren't nearly as strong as they could be, often being rather plain and unremarkable. It doesn't spoil the show for me, but it's a flaw people could easily point to when attacking the show).
@VRNProductions I stand by my original statement... this musical is head and shoulders above other musicals....just listen to the music and remember where this play came from....Victor Hugo
@WaileaWilly1 Hm...well, what in particular does this show have that makes it stand out amongst shows like, for instance, Follies, Pacific Overtures, Sunday in the Park With George, Cabaret, Sweet Charity, Chicago, West Side Story, Company, A Chorus Line, etc. I mean, I do really like Les Mis, but I wouldn't call it "heads and shoulders" above other shows when you've got the likes of Sondheim, Kander & Ebb, or Bernstein to compare it to.
@VRNProductions All of the shows you bring up are fantastic, but here's the kicker....all of us who act as critics as to what is best etc forget one thing, the public really has the last say.Of all the shows,Les Mis has been the one which has been in constant production(Broadway...Broadway Touring..World Tours) since it's start
@WaileaWilly1 Popularity says nothing about quality. Transformers 3 grossed far more money than a film like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, but you'd be hard-pressed to argue that it's honestly the better film. Just because Les Mis is insanely popular does not make it the best. What matters is the show itself, devoid of outside opinion or reaction or popularity. I ask you again- what makes this show definitively the best, even over all the others I've mentioned?
@WaileaWilly1 But what good are opinions if we don't defend and qualify them? Obviously life goes on and these sorts of discussions are relatively trivial in the grand scheme of things, but I don't see what's wrong about discussing our opinions in civilized manner.
@WaileaWilly1 I agree that it is the absolute best... probabaly because it has the most sense of reality and raw human emotion- it is timeless. However, it is, technically speaking, not a musical at all, it is an opera.
did anyone else notice in the 25th anniversary that Michael Ball made an appearance in the encore....Why couldn't of he done Marius one more time before Nick Jonas disgraced the songs.
also I have always thought the part where all the other parts cut off and valjean and javert sing in unison for a moment should be a very big part but here they don't give anything to it :(
This is by far my favorite version. BUT. In my personal opinion, my dream cast is everyone here and Ramin Karimloo as Enjolras. For some reason I just really don't like the guy who plays him in this video. . . . . once you've heard the breath control of Ramin. . . . theres not much more you can do .
This song always gives me the shivers! Especially where the cast joins in unison on "Tomorrow we'll discover what our God in Heaven has in store" Great cast, great score, great video!
@RhymesWithSammich Oh get off yourself. The 25th anniversary was amazing, with the exception of a few players. Stop hating just because you think its cool.
@super0star0material Eh, I'd disagree. 25th had some really good performances and some moments of brilliance, but on the whole was just soulless spectacle, heightened by the fact they tried more to emulate an actual performance rather than a concert. There's a wealth of examples of this, but the clearest one for me is comparing "Javert's Suicide" in each concert- particularly how Quast and Lewis choose to deliver the final few lines of the song.
@VRNProductions Quast plays it straight, singing as written, while Lewis goes the octave up- an audibly more impressive choice. But in terms of the emotion brought through in the performance, Quast blows it out of the water, embodying a crushing desperation that you don't hear in the Lewis interpretation.
@VRNProductions Both are excellent performers, mind you, but the choice to do what is more immediately impressive rather than what actively aids the performance is an attitude that pervades the whole of the 25th ann. concert.
I still can't figure out how they take 4 or 5 different melodies for the various characters and have them sing lyrics to those melodies all at the same time and it works? It's just so damn impressive.
@ArtMonkforHallofFame Theorywise (If the score I have is correct that is) it isn't 100% perfect... but they have still managed to make it work in a really good way so who cares? It sounds spectacular. :)
@BagOfSticksFork This is The original broadway Enjolras, Micheal Maguire. He won a tony award for his performance. The ORIGINAL, is David Bert, who has NOTHING on this guy.
