i had a '88 Dodge Aries 4 door....she was a sweetie...very dependable and good gas mileage and could go through snow up to her front bumper without a problem. i still have a rare K-car an '86 Dodge 600 ES turbo. convertible....less than 500 were ever made....and that thing is QUICK!!!
k cars saved chrysler back in the early 80's.They had record sales with these cars when ford was losing billions. Those were the cars we needed at the time and ford didn't have any to offer like it! Henry Ford IIs motto was SMALL CARS WENT SMALL PROFITS. G.m had the x and j cars but they were more troublesome then the k cars Go read Iee Iacocca's first book. The k car was designed by fords designers in 1977 but got scrapped by henry ford II himself. The design team and Iaccoca got fired .
I had an 89 aries, and it was the toughest car I've ever driven. It went to 217k miles, 75k in my tender teenage hands, with nothing other than maintenance (tires, shocks, brakes, etc.) before I sold it for the same $500 I paid for it. Wish I hadn't sold it; my next car was a Honda Civic (still very reliable, but not nearly as rugged) that went through 2 timing belts before I traded it in. Those two timing belt services cost more than all the other work done on my Aries combined! ($400+/- each)
@noelie84 I had an 89 aires too! It literally started crumbling from the salt on alaskan roads, but everything was working just fine at 200k. That car was a babe.
Wait a minute! That woman was supposed to be a Dodge Girl, not a Dodge Boy, for cryin' out loud. That might've been weird when she was one of them Dodge Boys.
my goodness... i don't know where to begin! What the hell does "uncanny driveability" mean? I can tell you what, these cars were appliances - if you wanted fun back then, you had to go with a Japanese hatchback or a GTI.
LOL Yeah, I remember back in those days I wanted a Honda CRX, a RWD Corolla or a Rabbit. The Omni was never on my list. It was on my grandmother's though. She ended up buying one and, believing or not, it held up pretty well for 10 years.
Hey, an Omni GLH went 0-60 in 6.5 seconds. That was quicker than than a GTI by a full second, and roughly equal to a Civic SI (6.7 seconds). Not to mention that it embarrasses the Supra and Celica GT-S, which needed 8.4 seconds and 8.6 seconds, respectively, to hit 60.
Compare the GLH's 1/4 mile time of 14.8 to the GTI's 17.5, the Honda's 16.7, & the two Toyota's times of 15.4&16.5 seconds, respectively, and you'll see that the Omni was a pretty sporty car (aside from the 'old person' smell)
You know...walking isn't so bad.

No Japanese or German hatchback could match an Omni GLH. Japanese hatchbacks were boring.

i would guess that it means that they were total 'dogs' out of the gate. No need to worry about that nasty wheel-spin here folks!!!

Mixed feelings on this one. I owned an 88 Horizon.I had a love/hate affair with it.
I sat in one the other day and just started laughing looking at everything from the door handles, to the stick shift...

I guess at this point Chrysler gave up pushing the K as 6 passenger with front bench.

Holy wow that was a painfully cheezy commercial. The sad thing is I still don't spend that kind of money on a car. LOL
