Amazing cut of such a classic! Btw, guys we really don't need to "age-discriminate" (in a positive way though) ourselves to make a statement of appreciation. While you think it's good music, just enjoy it :)
I was at a lame party....everyone was just standing around awkwardly. I pushed the DJ over and put this song on and everyone went nuts. Some songs are just timeless.
I could just listen to her 24/7...she is, in my opinion the greatest jazz singer ever...I love this more than ever when at 5:58 she goes "It`s been a hard days night, and I been working like a"...then she goes into this scatting frenzy!!! At about 6:08 all the horns come in and everyone goes haywire, Ella`s scatting as though her life depends on it... I love it!!!
this song swings! love it! the duke is the boss! just saw a cool video of a band that takes duke's satin doll and fuses it with neil young's cinnamon girl. it is amazing!
I was born in the wrong era. I'm 14 now, both of my parents born in '70... I love love love jazz, and this is by far my favorite version of Don't Mean a Thing.. Long live the greats<3
I for one ain't going to tell you how old I am. Why? Because my age has nothing, nothing ! to do with the quality of music - whether it be Duke Ellington or Guided by Voices. Use yr heads, yo.
okay that was one of the best things I ever heard in my life. They absolutely killed it! Every last one of them, including the band. And Ella! What a soul. She really had a gift.
@Nikoz7Makaveli I am 27 now but i grew up with this kind of music since my dad is from '34 and my mom from '49. So this music was very common at our house. The Rat Pack was too, Bennie Goodman, Glenn Miller. You name it and we had it home :) so yeh...I prefer this to nowadays music
I have been a longtime Ella fan and still she surprises and delights me with recordings I've not heard before. She remains the Queen of Swing. She had then nor has no peer to this day.
Great music rivals time and manages to never go out of style, back then, music was real and it was good then, its good now, and it'll be good forever...
What I love is that there's no emphasis on having it vocally "perfect" - she has fun with it, plays around with her voice and even LAUGHS halfway through her performance - it's natural. I'm not much of a traditionalist in music (in fact, I think many of the themes of swing can be found in alt-electronica) but this natural unselfconscious way of singing has, to a certain extent, been lost as mainstream. A shame.
@Alathaea unselfconscious? no, she was always aware of how she was singing, how she was "messing up" or "making an error" (according to the modern definition of music and perfection). but these "errors", these "inperfections" are what make it PERFECT. it's the purposeful mistakes that make it ingenius, creative, truly free. it's the purposeful mistakes that make it JAZZ.

It is not humanly possible to dislike this, even if one has been living under a rock. I suspect they misclicked since the buttons are too close to each other.

If you like this song, you'll like the movie Swing Kids. It's really sad.
