Saw this last week in a live broadcast from the Met in HD at my local movie theater. Happy the Met is now doing this for thoes of us who can't get to NYC. Fleming as Rodelinda and Stephanie Blythe as her sister Eduige were the two stars of the show. However, I have to say that my favorite of the cast was the Canadian tenor Joseph Kaiser in the role of Grimoaldo.
Yes, it was illegal to record this. But where can I get a copy? Seriously! Renee is supposed to sing a revival of Rodelinda at the Met in a few years so hopefully we will get a perfectly legal HD telecast of her fabulous Rodelinda in this great production.
I know what you mean. I wish there were a way to record these great performances and not step on the rights of performers. Thank Goodness Gelb has started doing the HD telecasts.
shrieking and shouting the notes is NOT what Handel had in mind......stick to Strauss, Renee and leave the baroque repertoire to the likes of Anna Caterina Antonacci.....now THERE is a true baroque artist
Although Handel is a barroque composer the role of Rodelinda is a sort of singularity in his operatic music, since it is particularly dramatic (I would venture to say almost verista hehe). I love the way Dorotea Roschmann (sp?) sings the role in the production (on DVD) of the Bayerische Staatsoper. She sings it almost like singing Verdi or even Puccini. Therefore I think that Renee Fleming (although is not among my favorite singers) fits fine to the role.
I'll get blasted for writing, I suppose...however...I find her sloppy. The scooping, the hitting low, the glissandi instead of runs, the approximate terminal pitches in ornaments and melismas. For my taste, this music benefits from more precision and control. Andreas Scholl's Rodelinda, for example, is like an emotional laser-beam. "Close" only counts in horseshoes and hand-grenades.
i have to agree. i was shocked by the poor sense of pitch and uneveness of vocal quality. not at all like handel should be sung. i think she should leave this to other singers.
I have to disagree, I don't find it sloppy at all. I think it's different from what everone else used to hearing her sing. I find her voice fits this aria beautifully.
one of the best i performances of this aria..i especuially love her beautiful and full topregister and her coloratura in this aria are sung with such precision...a true diva
spendid, simply STUNNING. what melismatic technique! beautiful soaring coloraturas, rich voice in all registers.
Rodelinda is by far my favorite opera of all time, and I searched far and wide to procure the 1985 Decca recording with Joan Sutherland as Rodelinda and her husband Richard Bonynge conducting the Welsh National Opera Orchestra. That is an exciting recording!
Please let me know whenever Rodelinda comes to any opera in the United States!!
acquired the sutherland WNO recording on an old taped set at a fle market - LOVED IT - do you think Fleming is better? Which would you go for and is the sutherland available on CD - cheers geoff674
Fleming is great here! I have no doubt that she will be considered one of the greatest singers of our times by the next generations. Her high notes are brilliant and big, her middle range is distinctive and rich and her low notes are almost unbelievable! Besides, here she sings some impressive coloraturas, and it's even more breathtaking to listen to the precision of her singing! Thanks for sharing it!

I think this is a wonderful production, and it is because Ms. Flemming is not a Baroquesinger that actuallu makes it work.
But I miss the video and the aria with Joan Sutherland that was removed some weeks ago.
