I have the exact same car with the same problem. The technician at BMW says its the break pad sensor which is in the rear right hand side. I am also embarrassed by the sound, but this is north worth picking a fight with the dealer.
I have an '07 335i with the same problem. A friend mechanic suggested that I spray the rotors with transmission fluid them break from 40 MPH. It has been 5 days now and the annoying noise is gone!!! Good luck.
I had BMW replace my brake pads, and the squeaking went away for a year. But it just came back this week. The service manager told me yesterday that when I am on a side road and slam on my brakes, the squeaking will stop for a little. I tried it, and it does stop the squeaking for a little, but it does come back. This noise is very embarrassing, but you just have to learn to live with it sadly. Gorgeous car otherwise.
BMW not taking responsiblity for this problem is a joke. My pads aren't even at half wear yet, and I've been having this problem for the last 20,000 miles. I have extended maintenance and warranty plans, and they said they won't cover it because "noise" is not covered.
@Ghines - I did replace the brakes with aftermarket pads but the sound isn't gone. As I've mentioned before, the problem is not with the pads, it is in the design of the brake sensor in conjunction with the pad.
@dshpuntov if you replaced the pads the sensor is no longer contacting the rotor. what you need to do is chamfer the pads if you dont replace the rotors, otherwise the new pad contacts the lip on the rotor causing the noise.
I just picked up an 07 335i coupe a week ago. I just noticed this noise as soon as I started driving with my windows down. It usually happens after 10-15 mins of driving, and I thought it would eventually go away, but it actually has gotten kind of louder in the past few days. I really don't feel like shelling out $1000 for a brake job, and my 335i is out of warranty, so I guess I will just replace the brake pads with aftermarket ones? Good video though, it's directly on point.
My silverado does this when I get over 35 but whenever I turn it stops but once I get to going straight it does it again it's embarcing to drive around in public but it's an 05 with only 35,550 miles on it
Thanks for posting his video. My 2008 E92 coupe began to squeal lightly too for no good reason after a maintenance. My dealer told me it was the sensor rubbing against the rotor, and nothing to worry about. However, it is annoying and sounds like metal on metal which is never good. Problem is that the sound is random, and you know what happens when you go to the shop. Quiet as a tomb. I can always drive with windows closed and stereo on but will take the car in if the sound gets worse.
If that does not work. It can be your dust pan behind the rotor and brake. It's bent toward the rotor so when it wheel spin it's making contact. Just with your hand pull that dust pan away from you rotor. I had that to me when my mechanis tweaked it so I can pay for another brake job
Many apologies for not responding; I posted this video back in '08 and haven't looked back since.
First, let me say this:
There is no way to fix this problem directly from BMW; The problem is in the design of both the pads and rotors for the E9x's, as well as the position of the brake pad wear sensor.
The only solution is to buy aftermarket pads and rotors.
Krazykou, Also have this problem and its not brakes, had new Pads, Discs & Bearings fitted, been in and out of Garage for last few months, still no Joy...so if anyone has any suggestions would love to hear em....because the dealership doesnt and I am going slowly Crazzyyyyyy...
I'm a BMW certify technician for 14 years , I know your problem. If you just had your brake pads replace, You will also need rotors replacment. BMW's rotors have a low wear level sensor on it just like brake pads wear sensor.. If your rotors is wearing too deep, you will hear the squeal just like on the brake pads.
hey everyone, I have a 99 bmw 323i . Ive been having a prob. with the back passenger side brakes sticking. I changed the caliper , brakes, rotor, brake hose, lines bled. now the brakes dont heat up anymore which is good but Im still getting a rubbing noise from that wheel as if its still sticking, also i do notice that the car is pulling as if the brakes are still sticking... Any advice on what it could be?
Had the same problem on my 06 330. Exact quote on service ticket from dealer: Rear Brake Sensor Hitting Rotor, Pads at 4.5mm Replaced Rear Brake Pads and Sensor Per SIB 34.03.09 DEF Code 34-21-19-39-00. Have not had a problem since.
@TheXtremeTech this is not true. grease cannot stop vibrations, it just eases up the friction between the piston and the shim (yes, you need to have shims between the pad and piston to lube THEM, not the piston or the backing plate of the pad!). so eventually the noise is gone, but vibration is still present, unless you aren't moving at all.
copper grease is good but not recommended, because it can interfere with pad particles. silicone is best and is hydrophobic.
@seasonedtoker Look-up for user 528im52 (BMW E46 3 series Front Brake Replacement) 4:49 and you'll see what I was trying to say in my previous post.
When it comes to brake discs I have to admit that I wasn't clear enough and forgot to mention the back of brake disc and wheel hub because that where you should apply some of for e.g. copper ease. Cheers.
same thing happened to mine and the dealer said that break dust had collected in the caliper piston and caused the pad to stick in the breaking position. Almost caused the brake to light on fire.
damn, i have the same problem, its so embarrassing! seems like one things goes bad, everything else starts to go bad, so careful, im learning the hard way
my 2007 bmw 750li is also doing the exact same thing in this video too but its louder tho like everytime i press the brake the squeak irritates me like seriously but pretty soon im taking it to the shop to check it out and see wat seems to be the problem either the pad is wearing down or if its just dust collecting i dont know if its something else but i will have to see maybe this weekend or sometime this week i will have to take it to the shop and check it out
Rotors do not rotate 100% true. This is required to help push back the pads/piston. However this pushing back action also utilizes the lip edge on the rotor - thus it scratches the pad and creates that rotational related squeak. Either change the brakes complete or better ... create a 45 degree angle on the pad material to keep the edge and pad seperated.

The way I see it, a squeaky brake is a small price to pay for amazing power and handling of the 3er.

@fluffyman - German cars have never been to reliable. You should take a look at Audi or MB, especially the older ones. Mostly they are barely alive.

Some workshops don't apply anti-squeak paste on brake pads which prevents them from vibrating and generating whistling noise.
They generally secure brake discs by applying cooper-ease solution against rust and high temp. impact on brake discs.

Listen people, squeal from the pad means a higher meatllic content, therefore a better brake pad! ONly in America.

@highfencejumper this happens when you are NOT breaking. So explain to me how a higher metalic content is even relevant to the discussion?
