oh man, whenevr i read abt d history of mankind i wonder how we hav reached here, imagine how human beings must hav lived 200000 years back like animals even worse then them roaming around naked,it has taken us this much time 2 reach wat we r 2day nd sum people say tht our struggles nd us gaining understnding on how d nature around us works is all part of a divine plan, fuck all those who believe nd propagate tht lie, religion is stone age barbarism wich has no place 2day,hail humanity!!!!!!!!!
It is amazing that comets are quite common and are zooming around all the time. We don't hear about most of them because many are too small to see and pass the earth distantly. We are at the mercy of comets striking us at any given time because we cannot predict the long term ones. It is questionable still if we could prevent a comet barrage via a spacecraft carrying a nuclear bomb, etc.
It's funny in those movies when people just run when the comet/asteroid shows up in the sky. Where are you going? You think you'll be safe when you get to the savage lands outside the States? Or outrun it to the other side of the Earth? Maybe the explosion just won't find you in the basement!
@Tulkastaldo I had a really cool dream once that Humanity had realized the world was about to end, and instead of rioting and panicking like you'd expect, everyone dropped what they were doing and had a massive global party. There was a doomsday countdown and everything.
It's amazing how afraid we, as humans, are of anything that we don't fully understand. True, the idea of a comet or asteroid impacting the earth isn't a very comforting one, but considering that it's far more likely you'll be killed by something familiar -- car accident, murder, lightning strike -- why even worry about comets and asteroids? People are strange animals.
A car, murder or accidental death only kills one, maybe several. Doesn't threaten mankind. One good comet and we can ALL kiss our asses bye bye! THAT'S why we strange animals worry.
It's easy to worry about damn near everything that could harm us...
...The trick however, is not to worry too much, learn many things about whatever it is we are worrying about, and occasionally, work out something carefully if action is needed.
Well, there was no end of time and as far as the planet was concerned Chernobyl was a non-event causing little damage, few deaths and in the context of the earth's history an episode with no significance at all. It just happened in our part of human history so we think it is something special.
It's a shame this film is not from later than 1980, as they could have included the appeare of Halley-Bopp in 1986. At that time it was noted that the Bible noted how the coming of a great disaster at the end of time would be marked by the appearence in the sky of a great comet - Wormwood. At the time of the comet's appearence in 1986 disaster struck a nuclear power station in the Ukraine, Soviet Union. And what is the Russian word for Wormwood? Chernobyl.
Actually, Chernobyl better translates into "black grass", which refers to mugwart (related, but not the same as wormwood). Like most biblical prophesies, it sounds like supporters are making a bit of a stretch there. Plus, as clausfarre said, Chernobyl, while horrible in the loss of life it caused, was far from a world-ending event, let alone something that could end time itself. Still an interesting anecdote, though.
Oh, I agree with you completely. It was just an example of how complete coincedences can look like they were preordaned or a conspiracy theory when put in a certain light. I bow to your (supposed) superior translation, I only have my information from Michael Palin's 1991 "Pole to Pole" where he visits Chernobyl. And it was Halley's comet not Halle-Bopp. My mistake.

@MisterEvasion we are at the mercy, but we will see it coming, there are millions of eyes watching the skies everyday, not all of them naked.

Well, unless you are in a position to do something about it, what is the point in worrying?
