After the "success" of SDM, Rahman went and did 'couples retreat' and then he said, "I felt my music was not used the way I thought". What was he thinking. Couples retreat???? This just shows how hungry he is for western admiration. @abhinaydro, forget about ARR matching IR in composing music without synthesizers, i'd be surprised if ARR can produce atleast 5% of what IR can produce. Thats why you see there are very few BGMs of ARR worthy of mention.. With due respect to ARR, ARR could have won Oscar, Grammy etc but when it comes to musical flair, knowledge and talent, IR is miles ahead of ARR.

Agreed, ARR has better tracks, but then the song was fitting there.. Whether this is a point of contention or not, it is pretty clear that IRs fans will not stop saying that IRs songs are more worthy of Oscars than ARs.

To all the folks trying to prove what they think is right (Like me :) ), it doesnt really matter whether the sound is digitized, or is made with computers and not with oure traditional instruments like IR did.... ARR serves not just one tyoe of audience... he needs to cater to variety of ears and public. He is no more limited to Tamil Nadu, He is not just national, he is global... First, an artist needs to make is mark.. how does he do that?

Just peel back the techno beats and listen to the song as such and you will know that a lot of work has been done on it... One cannot expect a MD to be stingy and stuck with one style of music... IR has variety... but how much...

I am not taking India on my shoulder. Its just that those people who are responsible for keeping poverty alive in this country are making films about poverty to get awards and charge Rs 5-10 crores per film just for composing some ridiculous music. He didnt get this Oscars in a day; In his pre-virtuoso journey, an attempt taking the Indian music to a level, where the entire world can listen to it, he went through various hurdle whilst experimenting, infusing a plethora of worldly musical styles, meanwhile winning thirteen Filmfare Awards, four National Film Awards, a BAFTA Award, a Golden Globe, a Padma Bhushan, many other state awards, two Grammy awards before getting the two Oscars at once for the music in the history.
About Thiruvasagam, winning Oscar or any award:: When some stalwarts commented, it is not even a Symphony or doesnt even comply such style, I remember ARR covering up IR, saying his work kind of resembling the Oratorio style, appreciating IRs attempt.

Who resurrected some of the excellent artists like hariharan, sujatha, alisha and many more and bring them to light, still using the current best famous without banging on the same famous artist to monopolize?
Classical heavyweights started liking it. Instrumentalists loved the song writing of the composer. Still he is a one man army doing everything by himself in a small room called as a music studio by himself.
A new young artist from south India debuts with rich digitized music contents, had all directions in his music, including the rest of the world, mingled with the Indian classical roots. Classical musicians as well as the, the normal along with the the existing composers including film audience started listening to his compositions more and more. Everybody accepted it and debated over the various 'buts'.
They understood something new they can't even understand in this film music has happened. The same kind of musical magic from the same artist happened more and more. And his name is A.R.Rahman.
Many fusion artists emerged and tried their way to go global and some were successful, but were struck at proceeding further. Film musicians also tried their best.
Film musicians, artists then decided to to go global, get awards and become world-famous, started combining local and various western music without knowing what kind of music they are trying to make.
Classical stalwarts like Zakhir hussain, Ravi shankar and Hariharan in the meantime did debut in the western world with their "Fusion", combining the classical and western, still trying to keep the virginity of the classical music.
People appreciated no matter what these composers did?
Film composers fame shooted too high, they even acted in films, started their own labels, sang film tiltle songs and dominated the industry as if they were the prime element of the film success.
They even managed to suppress to bring-up artists whoever they want. They never brought up their fellow artists who are extremely talented for some reason. They even started writing poem for films, sidelining the real poets.
Singers who are classically talented were suppressed not to express their native techniques in their film songs, unless approved or needed.
Many classical singers encouraged their disciples who wished to sing in films to sing whatever the film composer wants. Money and fame played a bigger part.
FIlm music grew vast, made many classical musicians and composers more poor as they can't get the majority film music audiences, as well as dont want to get in to film music.
Star stricken common people continued their loyalty to these composers.
Some loyal listeners even researched too deep in to their film songs and found certain raagas out of it in every word and stanza, as if the composers did based on that.
Film composers started using this and gave chances to the poor but classically rich to show their talent enforcing their own music knowledge.
Some film composers even hired these poor classical musicians and exhibited their classical talent to impress their fans. Classically rich people still kept quiet, stayed away from these people.
Classical musicians formed their own group and kept themselves separate since they were worried about their divine music, and were disparaged by many. Many of the classical musical innovations, their styles started disappearing rapidly. Traditional musicians tried to preserve it by keeping it away from the film music. Now and then the film composers tried to use the classical music in their film creations to prove as if they were good at it.
Many so called composers jumped in to the bandwagon knowing that film music is for the people who are classically dumb, hear anything in a language they know, shouted in music-like-sound, that could even become a film music. Many composers didn't even worry about the about the classical rules like shruthi, raaga, gamaks, brighas, alaps, or thala.
Many composers came and disappeared, as the people preferred something melodious, fast they can understand and sing by themselves some day without knowing Carnatic classical.
When the old classical music, then drama music met the later film music, some composers still managed to comply the carnatic and used many elements out of it, understanding they were not completely compliant with the classical content, later convincing the people it is for entertainment purpose only.
Still some cherished old classical heads said No. Classical music was used and abused in the films later.
I still remember the Pre-Rahman era from various famous composers lacking melody, sruthi, and life.
They even use erratic western sounds, occasionally complying the classical rules, as well as compose songs praising about themselves.
Also further claiming they know classical music and justifying they composed a song based on some raaga, upon knowing that their song most likely resemble some raaga.
When ARR praise IR, he means it, but the other way around doesn't happen from the heart somehow for some reason.
IR once has told in an interview he doesn't even know who is ARR! Can you beleieve that? Here is he now praising ARR! Also saw some news recently that IR commenting about ARR's usual "Ellap Puguzum Iraivanukke" chant. Sad.
I still can't believe why Balamurali is here with IR flirting around talking about Carnatic. If Balamurali has had enough media attention and money like film celebrities, IR might have different agenda altogether to do in this show rather than taking carnatic music on his shoulder or being a second mouth representing the legend like BMK. Pathetic.

South indian compsers touch their heart and say do you intend to grow the Carnatic music? Even if you say YES, i don't believe anybody. North indian film music still has songs with brighas, gamaks and rich classical content, while the south has none in their film repertoire.
Carnatic, the music of "Karu Nadu, the black tamil people's land", not "Karnatic" was ruined by the country style film composers, who now claim as if they know about raagas and other carnatic intricacies. Pathetic.

MSV is Athara Sruthi, IR is Panjamam, ARR is Sadjamam, and audience is Saptha Swara, a.k.a blind clappers. IR needs an award, understood from his speech. He should understand about himself before talking about others. Each composer makes his own brand of music & defines his own integrity.
IR's speed, chord prgrsn, etc is unmatched by many. So is ARR's sound acumen and creative aesthetic.
I'm a hardcore ARR fan myself. I like him bcoz I could relate 2 his music.
Comparing IR & ARR is like cmprng Sachin Tendulkar & Diego Maradona. Both are legends. But each is tuned to a different frequency.

After the "success" of SDM, Rahman went and did 'couples retreat' and then he said, "I felt my music was not used the way I thought". What was he thinking. Couples retreat???? This just shows how hungry he is for western admiration. He probably would have made half a dozen excellent tracks in India for the time he invested in a stupid western movie which was not even a decent run of the mill movie. @abhinaydro, forget about ARR matching IR in composing music without synthesizers, i'd be surprised if ARR can produce atleast 5% of what IR can produce. Thats why you see there are very few BGMs of ARR worthy of mention.. With due respect to ARR, ARR could have won Oscar, Grammy etc but when it comes to musical flair, knowledge and talent, IR is miles ahead of ARR.

yes, a true legend that can coerce a mani ratnam or a ram go gopal varma to launch his career, when all others have to do studio rounds. no other human soul can dream of such a career launch. truly great and amazing. all through his career of some 100 odd films Rahman worked with the best of indian directors. when he gets an english film, its with none other than a danny boyle. truly amazing. what a coincidence?????????????

wonder why someone needs to know the composer to comment on him. the works will do and the music will suffice. definitely detect undertones of disappointment in IR's speech who says the award is about humility.. its about music and IR compositions are permanent classics with sound fresh eternally. Cant say that about anyone else..I dont AR doing much in Tamil these days.. whatever he did really wasn't lasting or as good as his previous works. Last I thought was great was jillunu oru kadhal

I am not taking India on my shoulder. Its just that those people who are responsible for keeping poverty alive in this country are making films about poverty to get awards and charge Rs 5-10 crores per film just for composing some ridiculous music. Its not about IR or ARR. I would have raised this objection if IR got an award for his Thiruvasagam or some other ridiculous film thats demeaning our nation.

About Thiruvasagam, winning Oscar or any award:: When some stalwarts commented, it is not even a Symphony or doesnt even comply such style, I remember ARR covering up IR, saying his work kind of resembling the Oratorio style, appreciating IRs attempt.
Listen to all kind of Indian music or world music; you will come to know more about ARR.
ARR deserves every penny for his work. You are now jealous about ARRs growth, sounding funny even more!

FYI, Forget about AR, even IR said it in an interview (Yes, I have seen it) which asked journalist's not to call it a Symphony. It is an Oratio performed by a Symphonic Orchestra. That's all.

Don't say ravi shankar, he was choosen because he was a lucky Indian and he didn't do much there? He even had relations with the Beatles. Still today he and his generation is playing the same sitar with same style with no ambitions to hit the right world music, ofcourse preserving the classical roots and rules, which is a good thing.

the kind of music rahman is producing is produced by even street kids in the USA? The same beats the same shouting. All you need to have is the latest software and some other guys who can tweak a language so that even those language speakers cant understand. We should learn from Rahmans songs how to kill a language and its beautiful expressions.

Classical stalwarts like Zakhir hussain, Ravi shankar and Hariharan in the meantime did debut in the western world with their "Fusion", combining the classical and western, still trying to keep the virginity of the classical music.

Film composers fame shooted too high, they even acted in films, started their own labels, sang film tiltle songs and dominated the industry as if they were the prime element of the film success.
They even managed to suppress to bring-up artists whoever they want. They never brought up their fellow artists who are extremely talented for some reason. They even started writing poem for films, sidelining the real poets.

Singers who are classically talented were suppressed not to express their native techniques in their film songs, unless approved or needed.
Many classical singers encouraged their disciples who wished to sing in films to sing whatever the film composer wants. Money and fame played a bigger part.

FIlm music grew vast, made many classical musicians and composers more poor as they can't get the majority film music audiences, as well as dont want to get in to film music.
Star stricken common people continued their loyalty to these composers.
Some loyal listeners even researched too deep in to their film songs and found certain raagas out of it in every word and stanza, as if the composers did based on that.

Film composers started using this and gave chances to the poor but classically rich to show their talent enforcing their own music knowledge.
Some film composers even hired these poor classical musicians and exhibited their classical talent to impress their fans. Classically rich people still kept quiet, stayed away from these people.

Classical musicians formed their own group and kept themselves separate since they were worried about their divine music, and were disparaged by many. Many of the classical musical innovations, their styles started disappearing rapidly. Traditional musicians tried to preserve it by keeping it away from the film music. Now and then the film composers tried to use the classical music in their film creations to prove as if they were good at it.

Many so called composers jumped in to the bandwagon knowing that film music is for the people who are classically dumb, hear anything in a language they know, shouted in music-like-sound, that could even become a film music. When the old classical music, then drama music met the later film music, some composers still managed to comply the carnatic and used many elements out of it, understanding they were not completely compliant with the classical content, later convincing the people it is for entertainment purpose only.

I still remember the Pre-Rahman era from various famous composers lacking melody, sruthi, and life.
They even use erratic western sounds, occasionally complying the classical rules, as well as compose songs praising about themselves.
Also further claiming they know classical music and justifying they composed a song based on some raaga, upon knowing that their song most likely resemble some raaga.

When ARR praise IR, he means it, but the other way around doesn't happen from the heart somehow for some reason.
IR once has told in an interview he doesn't even know who is ARR! Can you beleieve that? Here is he now praising ARR! Also saw some news recently that IR commenting about ARR's usual "Ellap Puguzum Iraivanukke" chant. Sad.

South indian compsers touch their heart and say do you intend to grow the Carnatic music? Even if you say YES, i don't believe anybody. North indian film music still has songs with brighas, gamaks and rich classical content, while the south has none in their film repertoire.

MSV is Athara Sruthi, IR is Panjamam, ARR is Sadjamam, and audience is Saptha Swara, a.k.a blind clappers. IR needs an award, understood from his speech. He should understand about himself before talking about others.
