They don't bother people and stay very still when spotted. They often play dead because they fear being messed with. Most animals that are dangerous are usually out of fear.
The only real danger with opossums are the same as any stray animal. Possibilty of rabbies.
The only other thing is their secondary action of self-protection. Whipping you with their extremely strong bare tail if you mess with them too much. If it gets you: ouch...
@Axxidous actually the risk of them having rabbies is VERY low :) you have a better chance of getting sick from your mailman than these wonderful creatures!! Most people dont know that, pass the word along please!
@winteronfire Risk may be low, but it's still there. I never really said it was high or anything I just said it was one of the only real dangers, and I said the danger was "Possibility" of rabbies.
And even if it's low, you're still more likely to get sick from one of them than a mailman (well, depending on how much you encoutner them and what kinda "sick" we're talking about. XP They DO still run around outside.)
opossums are not destructive and can just be left alone as they just go about their business and try to remain very obscure so other creatures and humans dont bother them. I would rather have a possum living in my shed.
@NewbornHippo really? i have opposums up where i live in massachusetts, and i also have a few cats living outside, and i've never experienced any real problems with opposums, they just come up for leftover catfood and then go away. Some of my cats will be only like a few feet away. Same with skunks, even though the skunk does spray them alot.
pssh. Are people still ignorant on the opossum?
