My mother works for the state (part of probation & parole). She gets her insurance through the government and is better covered than anybody making a comparable salary in the private sector.

We need to open the insurance business, and not close it in. I want Geico like companies to be able to offer it across the US. I want market forces to determine who gets what, and not governments. I want people to have choice not governments or companies. Single payer is no choice.
Geico doesn't sell health insurance just for the record. Offering insurance across state lines is a fine idea but it will not stop the ridiculous increase in premiums.
Insurance co's will just continue to take bigger profits. As long as there is a profit motive in health care, you will not see any changes. I'm all for free market .. The public option would be a "choice" not mandatory .If ins co's want to compete,they will need to lower their premiums.
Bigger profits means what? Just looking at their gross profits is rather meaningless. They serve a lot of people, I'd expect their profit to be large. Their profit margin is a better analysis of their success, and 3-5% I hear isn't much if the avg US profit margin is around 8%. Insurance pays for care, so stopping care costs from rising seems like a more logical approach. Public option is not a choice, because everyone will subsidize it. Businesses, insurance companies, individuals who opt out.
stop the cost rising step by step, so nobody in the private interest notices. why is it that in some places in the US healthcare is twice as expensive, but the people are not any healthier? unnecessary tests, hospital-biomedical company contracts (to continue using unnecessary tests), price fixing i'm pretty sure, etc. a law i would propose is that no matter where you live, there is a maximum you can be charged, and a minimum you will receive. that would be a good start.
make the patient/consumer more involved in the payment process. many of us (like myself) have gotten used to paying a co-pay and never knowing the actual costs of the doctor visit or medical procedure being done. say, if more people had health savings accounts (self funded or from an employer) and had catastrophic insurance on top of that, for basic care they'd pay on their own. They might make different, cost-effective choices and suppliers might charge less because they would be payed up front
The insurance companies are exempt from anti-trust regulations that all other companies have to abide by. By not exempting them they would fall under the commerce clause of the federal guidelines. All 1300 insurance companies could compete against eachother as opposed to closed state monopolies of just a few choices. THAT"S CAPITALISM.

Medicare covers 43 million and Medicaid cover 49 million. Without accounting for overlap this is about 1/3 of the population. Government does contribute but it's only part of the problem. Why else does it work so well in other countries where government is all over it?

The plan is employer based through United Healthcare. I am a college grad I make enough to pay loans, healthcare, car note, auto insurance, etc. I have a good job, nonetheless your solutions are impractical because unemployment is near 10% and its employer based so I cannot choose much... It is unreasonable to say one should shop around especially with an employer based system like we have.

Actually ridiculous industry regulations make health care cost too much. Health Insurance companies being exempt under Anti-Trust laws make health care cost too much. People using health insurance everytime they catch cold make it cost too much. People not shopping around to make doctors and insurance companies compete makes it cost too much. I would support malpractice reform and tort reform if the other side were willing to allow for the creation of the public option. Politics is all about compromise, its not about me getting my way, or you getting your way. Its what can we do to compromise and find a happy medium.

My mother works for the state (part of probation & parole). She gets her insurance through the government and is better covered than anybody making a comparable salary in the private sector.

We need to open the insurance business, and not close it in. I want Geico like companies to be able to offer it across the US. I want market forces to determine who gets what, and not governments. I want people to have choice not governments or companies. Single payer is no choice.

Geico doesn't sell health insurance just for the record. Offering insurance across state lines is a fine idea but it will not stop the ridiculous increase in premiums.
Insurance co's will just continue to take bigger profits. As long as there is a profit motive in health care, you will not see any changes. I'm all for free market .. The public option would be a "choice" not mandatory .If ins co's want to compete,they will need to lower their premiums.

Bigger profits means what? Just looking at their gross profits is rather meaningless. They serve a lot of people, I'd expect their profit to be large. Their profit margin is a better analysis of their success, and 3-5% I hear isn't much if the avg US profit margin is around 8%. Insurance pays for care, so stopping care costs from rising seems like a more logical approach. Public option is not a choice, because everyone will subsidize it. Businesses, insurance companies, individuals who opt out.

stop the cost rising step by step, so nobody in the private interest notices. why is it that in some places in the US healthcare is twice as expensive, but the people are not any healthier? unnecessary tests, hospital-biomedical company contracts (to continue using unnecessary tests), price fixing i'm pretty sure, etc. a law i would propose is that no matter where you live, there is a maximum you can be charged, and a minimum you will receive. that would be a good start.

make the patient/consumer more involved in the payment process. many of us (like myself) have gotten used to paying a co-pay and never knowing the actual costs of the doctor visit or medical procedure being done. say, if more people had health savings accounts (self funded or from an employer) and had catastrophic insurance on top of that, for basic care they'd pay on their own. They might make different, cost-effective choices and suppliers might charge less because they would be payed up front

The insurance companies are exempt from anti-trust regulations that all other companies have to abide by. By not exempting them they would fall under the commerce clause of the federal guidelines. Medicare, Medicaid, and all the other government run healthcare programs FAIL to pay the full cost for the care provided to patients. Where do you think the providers make up the losses?

I am a college grad I make enough to pay loans, healthcare, car note, auto insurance, etc. I have a good job, nonetheless your solutions are impractical because unemployment is near 10% and its employer based so I cannot choose much... The problem with American capitalism in general is that there's only a perception of competition. The biggest companies, ala Walmart et al, crush all their competition, because they're large enough to do so.
Even needing to resort to the idea of a Public Option is somewhat regrettable, but we gave private industry no rules, and they ran amok in general. Banks, Health, etc. Most industries shot themselves in the foot with greed.

Yep. And I think Moore was close, but not quite. At least based upon the interviews he's given after the fact. He seems to think Capitalism itself is the problem, whereas I say we need the ghost of Teddy Roosevelt to come back and bust some trusts, the way the ol' Trustbuster used to.

The reason is because there are so many industry regulations and more pointless regulations which make it impossible for small business emerge and compete. We dont have real capitalism or free markets, we havent in a long time.

HA! American capitalism reached its heights when they kept giant industries from becoming institutions that were "too big to fail." Once they "turned the bull loose", Hell followed soon after. The middle class started dying in the 80s.

Wow, what a blatantly ignorant comment. Free market capitalism is all about if you fuck up, you fail and you go out of business. Kaynesian (economics of Bill Clinton and most all Democrats) and Socialist (Obama) policies are what the "bail" outs and "not letting" the giants fail are all about. Subsidizing failing companies and industries is big government, not free markets. Thats all Obama is doing, subsidizing EVERYTHING including and mostly toxic industry. The middle class comment= unfounded.

No, what happens is that when you let an industry get too big, like the banks had, the entire global market leans upon them too heavily, and when they collapse, they drag the entire planet down with them. We COULD have let the banks fail, but there wouldn't be anything to take their place. If there had been a competitive marketplace in the first place, there would've been options.
What you want is AnarchoCapitalism, which is as stupid as Russian Communism.

The only place for government in the economy is protect the market from monopolies and coercion. The difference between free-market capitalism and "state capitalism" is the difference between "peaceful, voluntary exchange" and a collusive partnership between business and government that uses coercion to subvert the free market. Which we had under Bush.

Actually ridiculous industry regulations make health care cost too much. Health Insurance companies being exempt under Anti-Trust laws make health care cost too much. People using health insurance everytime they catch cold make it cost too much. People not shopping around to make doctors and insurance companies compete makes it cost too much. But Liberals will just say its the lazy evil capitalist corporations and the moronic American Public will just accept it.

Ok what u just mentioned does make healthcare cost up but u forgot to mention is about the paycheck CEO's get of all these industries. how about one guy who make half a million dollars an hour. THAT DRIVE THE COST UP. Skyrocketing drug prices DRIVE THE COST UP. Lack of competition DRIVES THE COST UP. Your weak @ss points dont drive cost up that much. If u ask me it only drives about 20% of cost up but rest of 80% is what i mentioned and u forgot to mention.

Well, industry regulations imposed by government agencies are one of the main reasons drug prices are skyrocketing. Exemption from Anti-Trust laws and people not shopping around effect lack of competition. Nobody in the health care industry makes half a million dollars an hour, thats an absurd exaggeration. There is a CEO of a healthfcare industry who makes 500,000 an hour. and most of the general CEO's of healthcare industry make millions of dollars a year. on top of billion of dollars in profit for company. HOW? Denying care for people who needs it and droping care for people who are getting expensive.
2nd Lack of regulation has made so called free market to go on rampage and rape USA from top to bottom. Richer are getting rich. Poor and middle class people are getting broke and dying.

None of you people know anything. Michael Moore and John Stewert tell you the free markets are the root of all evil and you just accept it. REGULATIONS tons and TONS of RIDICULOUS regulations are what make it impossible for small business to emerge or to ever compete with the large corporations and companies. Do some economic research, the U.S. has not had free markets since the 80s and even then it wasn't really free.
