Even then, because of a dysfunctional economic system, the Soviets had nothing to offer but commodities, specifically oil. It has been said by economist all over the world, that escalating oil prices propped up the USSR for 10-15 years. It should have collapsed in the mid 80's. It simply did not work. @DoDoDJZ I would argue that Gorbachev realized that the old system could not survive much longer. Soviet strength likely peaked around 1975 militarily and economically. Even then, because of a dysfunctional economic system, the Soviets had nothing to offer but commodities, specifically oil. It has been said by economist all over the world, that escalating oil prices propped up the USSR for 10-15 years. It should have collapsed in the mid 80's. It simply did not work. I would suggest a book -

He wrote that the Politiburo was aware most Soviet citizens had inadequate consumer goods, and the military could not get the funds needed to compete with the West. The Politburo was sclerotic and resisted. It could have gone the route of Deng Xiao Peng, and Russia would have boomed. It did not. Gorbachev only exposed the realities of the situation.

Oh, this is really funny. The Tupolev, also known as the "Concordski" was based on stolen designs for the Concorde. The Concorde at that time still had fatal design flaws. The British and French discovered the theft. The Tupolev made its debut at the Paris Air Show, and as we all know, crashed. The Soviets really did have red faces. Other technology here ? Crap. Nobody bought anything made in the USSR. Cars, appliances, electronics, nearly all junk. The system did not work.

@inefedov In reality i grossly underestimated the death toll when i said 20,000,000. Thats the number that died in his Gulags or slave camps. But even after he died in 1953 people were still in those Gulags were they were still dying. Not to emotion the mishandling of crops and grain which lead to even more deaths. The deaths of the people he deported. OF course the Holodomor which i cant prove stalin did so ill just cut that number out. The execution of people who deported to Europe.

If it indeed was so great then it would be recreated, a country disliked by it's citizens cannot survive changes as big as the ones gorbatchev implemented. I am however not saying that the soviet union was bad to its people, only that the illusion of influence (democracy) is better than a one party state. because the people automatically dislike something they cannot influence. that is why democracy is more durable... but certaintly not better.

Also. this union seems to be partaking the states who previously received the most by being a part of the union - additionally this also seems to be areas which was part of the union, not a satellite state, but a part of it. this meant their planned economies were interlaced. so with this in light it's perfectly understandable why the would like to rejoin. however I admit I didn't know of this... and I dont think the ukraine would join.

Stalin made some huge mistakes, but he is alot better than historians claim him to be, Stalin did some great things he built the USSR and made it into a super power, but was killed off by Kruschev and Brezhnev who reinstated capitalism which eventually killed it off, Kruschev was a traitor he blaimed Stalin for many things he had done such as the killing of thousands of Ukrainians, Stalin told Kruschev not to do this, but after his death Kruschev told everyone it was Stalin.
