At the time, I think Nintendo was trying to cash in on societies fascination with "virtual reality", and pretty much tried to sell it as a virtual reality gameplay unit. When people actually played the thing however, it didn't quite live up to that hype which Nintendo set up for the system. I remember reading about it all the time in my Nintendo Power magazines back in those days, and that is basically how they hyped it, as a legit virtual reality system.
@TheNinwii naa bro. 3DS has already kicked this things ass. i have a virtual boy for one sole purpose. Wario Land. The 3ds has no need for headwear of any sort. its next gen, and its fully portable with 3D (as in polygons) graphics (and far better than the DS, almost on level with the game cube) virtual boy wasnt well recieved due to nintendo rushing it to market in order to shift development towards the Ultra 64 (Nintendo 64)
HAHA....hes trying not to play it because he knowss that "Man 32 bit graphics that are in red in black....why dont ya just make me play a 32X while your at it!"....ah just kidding....might be a fail nintendo system but has there really been anything like it
I owned a Virtual Boy when it first came out and I had Mario Tennis and Wario Land, and the games were 3D. Wario Land was one of the best platformers I had played during that period in time, in the 90s... surprisingly good... you need a Virtual Boy to know what your talking about... It is an excellent gaming device, but it had it's flaws... basically the only flaw it had was head aches, neck strains, and that it really was not portable.
All those games they mention werent anything worth mentioning in this commerical as if they're so cool. the names alone says their crap. who the hell cares about playing pinball on a newly released console? thats like if they made some arcade crane game simulator for wii when it came out and mentioned in the commercial with this guys voice trying to make ti sound so "dangerous" and "play it if you dare to be cool" give me a break
I never cared what anyone said about this thing. I wanted one from day one. Later on, it failed so miserably and I got one on discount brand new for $24.99 from EBX!!! Very happy day!
Worst console ever.

Have it ! It has a built in pause after like 10 minutes to give your eyes a rest.....It is fun but the new 3D by Nvidia is more impressive.

3d system!!?? most games were just 2d,with just the same background, only a few games were true 3d,but they looked mostlly skalletory.
what it needed was doom and pokemon stadium, with link feature.
why they dit,nt call it stereoscopic 3d system cuzz that,s exactly what it is.
3d my ass!!!!!!!!!

Notice they never show the actual gameplay. This thing was a marketing disaster piece-of-sh*t.

The only advert I've seen for a system that comes close to stating nearly every game released for the system.

cuz it sucked so bad it would just get worse dats why
cowmasterbob 2 years ago
it was red because red is the colour that uses the least power.
and thats why they didn't do a coloured screen
because the battery would have been drained in a few minutes
(it worked on regular battery's :-( )
and the consoles back then weren't power efficient so they tried to save as much as they could.
but virtualboy would have been much better with a headstrap and.. COLOUR
it shouldn't had been portable but just attached to a external console.
and mini Heads Up Display attache to it

True, but there games you'd be better off playing on a normal tv or LCD screen, but i agree

Thats something ive got to ask. WHY RED!? Of all colours...
Ive never had one of these, but from what I heard, red was used a way on saving money.

I have had this system for years. I have never had any kind of problems while playing it and I am prone to headaches.
