I agree - Funny Girl, Gypsy are 2 of the most quintessential Broadway overtures there are, in my opinion. 2 great scores, the likes of which we wont ever see again. Pure Broadway magic
Do they make trumpets differently these days! I say this because if you listen to this Jule Styne overture the musicians actually care about what they're playing. In other words they are not blase. How many times have I been to a show recently where the musicians just don't care. Ah well...I guess it was a different time. Here are musicians playing at the peak of their powers with this phenomenal Jule Styne overture. God Bless him!
@damone77 I think Styne used a lot of cornet in this overture as well as in other songs in Funny Girl. The cornet seems to have a "cleaner," crisper sound than a trumpet. The quality of the performance in this overture could well result from Styne's score and reputation being so strong that the best of the best lined up to come on board. It's probably the strongest overture ever written for Broadway.
@MsTruNorth I couldn't agree more. In addition to the Funny Girl overture, the overtures for "Bells are Ringing" and "Gypsy" are mighty wonderful Too. Great point about the coronet! I had forgotten about "Coronet man". Thanks for the reply:)!
@damone77 Yes, and consider how Streisand's voice was often stylized--possibly at the Musical Director's request--to sound like a cornet in many songs.
This must be one of the strongest overtures ever written for Broadway. Listening to it again, I try to imagine what audiences felt the first time they heard this overture. It's so strong and so complete that an audience almost feels completely satisfied for the evening after hearing it. The "promises" made by the beauty and strength of the overture put a lot of pressure on the material and performers that followed not to disappoint or be less than this overture. It's amazing they could and did.
New skating routine! well parts of it... My old one was bye bye birdie which also has a good overture!
