Had my father (the singer in the cabaret setting) lived long enough he would have been able to travel to Russia. It was one of his dreams. He grew up in a Polish and Ukranian household, here in America- spoke and sang in many languages- and was a professor of Slavic Languages in Los Angeles, CA, at UCLA.
Russians don't look like gypsys. Look on cities ic Czech republic there are many gypsies.
If I'm make a movie about irish folk music and culture in, let's say california, or Texax, Australia, and show you that, will you recognize that the people are not Irish?...
@RADAMES1983 i don't think you're being racist. I think people are being oversensitive here, and I see absolutely no reason why the filmmakers would lie and get actors, it's senseless. I get annoyed with representations of rural ireland but yes, I have to realise that a decade before I was born, times were different
Singing at table on celebrations and feasts is common to Human nature.
It has nothing to do with Russian folk music, which has being oppressed for centuries and is STILL under oppression today.
The modern Russian ensemble's production, that you've mentioned, is a no less fake than this 1973 movie!
It is just pop-music, modeled after Western standards, spiced up with pseudo-Russian colour. As for the authentic Russian folk music - it's something completely different.
@babai2345 I'm sorry but i think you don't whay what kind of ansambles I'm talking about.
Not about babkina and this shit.
I'm talking about ansambles who really work on finding the tradition and repeat and save it.
And there are many of them now, after 1991.
About music arround the table - yes. and every place it's there oum music and tradition- that is how the folk music born. Arroiund the table, on Chtostmas, Pascha ect.
@RADAMES1983 One doesn't have to be in particular geolocation nowadays, to gain understanding, thanks to IT. I'm studying ethnic,especially Russian music, for decades. Check a nice list of today's active folksy groups in post-Soviet space.
It is on ruplace dot ru.
And if you make an effort to study this matter-the common trends are obvious.
@RADAMES1983 and what about beyond the ural mountains? You can find many different colours there - hair, eyes, skin, whatever. Sounds a bit absurd to hire Turkish people to perform as Russians hmm, and they don't look like gypsies
@RADAMES1983 I've been there too, to yekaterinburg and ural area, maybe you're from Russia and if so you are better informed, but remember this is 1973 and times were different, it's not that it's their everyday life but every country has traditional music and dance
I'M A VIETNAMESE ! I WANT TO TELL THAT : I LOVE RUSSIAN [ ^.^]

I'm Russian and It's my favorite music, I know ir from the age of 0.
But I have to sat that the performers are NOT Russians.
Don't look like Russians, don't perform like us and have a very heavy accent...
Looks like Turkey.
If you go to Russian village- most of the people are blue - green eyes and blond - Light brown hair.
And the performance is like Gypsy's.

@catoushka - it's not about rasism.
You are from Irland don't you?
If I'm make a movie about irish folk music and culture in, let's say california, or Texax, Australia, and show you that, will you recognize that the people are not Irish?...
So that's the same...

@catoushka \
I didn't say they lie, but the movie is from 1973. the couldn.t do that in Russia (ussr) in that time...
Why people are sensitive? Cause they LOVE this people culture and music, and they see a movie with no anyone of them called "Russian folk music).
the performance is not only bad but just not that...

@RADAMES1983
Hehe
Even the accordion he use "harmonium".
We don't have accordions in villages. We have Vayan or Garmon', which sounds differante.
And the dance in not Russian. Everything there is fake :(

@RADAMES1983
I get from your Nick - you from 1983?
Don't waste your life's time looking for something unreal.
This film is no more unreal than your perception on Russian culture.
This culture has passed away...
But "Fanny and Alexander" is forever ! ;)
babai2345 1 year ago
@babai2345
I can't agree with you.
The culture is alive, and there are so many ansambles and groops that really
performomg it should be abd as it was.
And it's alive in the hears of the people. Have you ever heard people in Russia singing during the meal? That's a folk music...
