@MelissaRWhitfield It's a linguistic feature of ASL. Similar, but not exactly the same as a spoken language uses tone of voice to convey a different meaning or concept. Example: the signs for "late", and "not yet"; are the same except for the use of the tongue, or mouth morpheme. Pretty observant of you, and great question. Hope my 'butting in' helped clarify. :)
