I would have got the M1730 but it's out of date. The CPU, memory, video card, the motherboard is all out of date. I would be using more watts for less power and less battery life if I got that instead of this Asus.
I had this laptop and the Bass was Amazing. The best laptops that are built off sound, the HP one at best buy with the Bass cranked is like 1/16th the bass of this thing. I got an Asus G51JX-X5 and it's like no bass at all. I remember when I was hearing the bass of the M1710 I was like this is the way it should be. Nothing matches this. Not sure why.
What are the possible options for stopping of overheating on these ? I just ordered a refurbished one for a mere £299, although Im well aware of the overheating as its such a high spec beautiful Lappy. Some say simply vacuuming it often helps....? Or can I buy a universal fan to add or ? Any help would be appreciated.

@bboyta yea hd lags with me too. im using pinnacle studio 12. aparrently you should have a minimum spec of 2.40ghz to edit hd footage. my xps 1710 is 2.16 :(
OH i just got mine new m1710 laptop awesommmmmmmmmmmmme .... a promotional company gave it to me for review ...........Its freaking awesome ... Fast but only prob is overheating but otherwise this thing rocks...I will share with you possible fixes very soon.

You had to buy the best processor upgrade the T7600G which was a special Dell version that was simply unlocked for overclocking. I bought it and really it's not even worth it because it actually throttles the clock speed.

You can only overclock a t7600G processor(which you pay extra for) natively without any tampering or 3rd party software/hacks. Meaning, Dell will only allow you to overclock this processor because it has the G at the end. Even though it is exactly the same in performance as the t7600.
its 2.8 standard, but i can overclock it to 3.1 with tat cheap air cooling fan it came with... if i go any higher, for some reason, the sound card stops working (no sound comes out of my speakers). but when i reboot it, it goes back to 2.8ghz again, so its back to normal.
overclocking is tweaking to make your computer to perform faster by making it work harder... it also results in increase of heat and power consumption...
i personally use third-party software to overclock my computer because i also do not have it on my bios

I have the same dell, (m1710) Do you know why cant i overclock my notebook? When I run the setup (F2) I dont have the option to choose OVERCLOCK in the performance folder... do you know why?? does only the new ones come with this option?? I got mine one year ago.. THANX!
The upgrade is two-fold. First, you have to buy the processor. Then you need to get the firmware update for your model. I assume that you have a m1710, so I believe that if your machine is somewhat current, you will need the A06 or later firmware to do this.
I do not believe there is any difference on the motherboard side of things to worry about. Hope that helps you.
One thing, if you do get the processor, optimum setup is 2.83gHz, which I believe is the 17x multiplier. Anything faster than that and you start seeing issues with the relatively slow bus speeds and speed of the RAM.
I personally have the regular 7600 processor and I can run most games at full (no anti-alias) including Bioshock (on XP SP2, not Vista). Call of Duty 4 also can be run on full, just no anti-alias. Once I turn that on, I am down to 1280x800 for widescreen, but the picture is damn awesome!

CPU overclocking doesn't pose a big risk on computers theese days. As long as your memory can keep up and temps are under control, it wont do any damage. Most of the time a failed overclock will just need a Bios clear to fix it.
how do i overclock my M1710? i dont have that option in the BIOS ion performance mode and i have Revision A07 (latest one). Any help would be appreciated .
na Khrisf, i think we got ripped off cause i bought my XPS M1710 about 3 months after it came out , u need to have a 2.33Ghz chip to have that option in the BIOS (i think)

Without getting techy, it means to push the processor further than factory specifications, typically through the bios program...ok, you can't explain it without getting techy. Nevermind...I tried.
that is to OVER-CLOCK the processor speed, maeaning that you can change the speed of the processor! for example from 2.5 GHZ to 3.0 GHZ! however, from what i know that is not very good to do to your processor, because that is like somebody running non-stop without a break! and gets tired (in this case the computer overheats). it is not the normal pace of the processor anymore! OVERCLOCKING is very good tool though! however, not recommended for amateurs, if you dont understand it completely!

I believe if you can't mod the voltage, the battery life should stay roughly the same.
And I doubt any laptop manufacturer would let you mod the voltage.

try doing it yourself, but just go slowly up.
like just 20mhz faster each time.
if something goes wrong, then u went just a little too high... just write ur highest speed u can reach on a peice of paper and save it somewhere
also, i don't think it will go higher than 3ghz, but still u have dual core, so that better than my 3.1ghz single core.

how du you overlock a dell pc? I havn't this step in my bios, what a bios is that?

I have the same dell, (m1710) Do you know why cant i overclock my notebook? When I run the setup (F2) I dont have the option to choose OVERCLOCK in the performance folder... do you know why?? does only the new ones come with this option?? I got mine one year ago.. THANX!

You probably don't have the 7600G processor. You need the "G" to do this.

The upgrade is two-fold. First, you have to buy the processor. Then you need to get the firmware update for your model. I assume that you have a m1710, so I believe that if your machine is somewhat current, you will need the A06 or later firmware to do this.
I do not believe there is any difference on the motherboard side of things to worry about. Hope that helps you.

One thing, if you do get the processor, optimum setup is 2.83gHz, which I believe is the 17x multiplier. Anything faster than that and you start seeing issues with the relatively slow bus speeds and speed of the RAM.

I personally have the regular 7600 processor and I can run most games at full (no anti-alias) including Bioshock (on XP SP2, not Vista). Call of Duty 4 also can be run on full, just no anti-alias. Once I turn that on, I am down to 1280x800 for widescreen, but the picture is damn awesome!

CPU overclocking doesn't pose a big risk on computers theese days. As long as your memory can keep up and temps are under control, it wont do any damage. Most of the time a failed overclock will just need a Bios clear to fix it.

na Khrisf, i think we got ripped off cause i bought my XPS M1710 about 3 months after it came out , u need to have a 2.33Ghz chip to have that option in the BIOS (i think)

and with hybrid sli coming up, i think youll be suprised how much a laptop can do.
And yeah they might be heavy, but ill bet if you took your desktop and lifted it up and compared to this dell i think youll find the dell a bit more light :)

i know that, but XPSes and Alien Wares are way different. Alien Wares are pretty much GAME ONLY computers. XPSes are not as powerful, but cheaper and more all around computers, but better in games. the Alien Ware Aurora mALX laptop is better than ANY XPS laptop that ever came out. in fact, the Aurora mALX could be THE BEST gaming laptop in the world currently out. the Aurora mALX PWNS the m1710 anyday in performance, and graphics.

dude, i talked to a guy that has worked for dell. he ended up later working for alienware after they were bought out by dell. he said that their laptops were so over priced, and peices of junk, but they were so rich because people believed that the more money it is the better it is. Suckers. :P

I have m1710 too, but 2.00GHz and 7950GTX.
I regret not getting 2.33GHz, cuz i can't over-cloak!!! (And most games require more CPU power than GPU power :( )
Oh well...
So guys, if you are buying x1710, I highly recommend you to get 2.33GHz.

that is to OVER-CLOCK the processor speed, maeaning that you can change the speed of the processor! for example from 2.5 GHZ to 3.0 GHZ! however, from what i know that is not very good to do to your processor, because that is like somebody running non-stop without a break! and gets tired (in this case the computer overheats). it is not the normal pace of the processor anymore! OVERCLOCKING is very good tool though! however, not recommended for amateurs, if you dont understand it completely!

Man won't you just stop attacking Dell, first off never heard of Cleo they got no reputation no history and dell is one of the few top dog pc maker to at least attempt to build a gaming computer and care for gamers, I own xps 170 and now after a year and half still running strong, this thing is as beast, and dell customer support doesn't suck either they have a special xps team dedicated for this laptop so go ahead and buy your cleo or whatever and shut up about it.
