@Coldacre Their first recording / rendition of this song was in late 1978, it was a sort of 'soft metal' style. This vid is of the second rendition. The Boy album version is the third rendition.
I love U2 more than most, but I've gotta say, I'm a little disappointed in the live version of this song. I mean, on the album it's so dark and atmospheric and dream-like, and here it's so... pop. I mean, it's cool but it's just not the same. The album version is much better, I think.
The original demo version was way different than this, kinda like sludgy soft chordal metal. Shadows actually has three distinctive renditions, all by U2. Basically, there was the 1978 version - the original, the '79-'80 version which is this one, and then the Boy version, 1980, which was never played out live, - too studioey.

It's a very early song and it needs a little expertise, but for me it's the most beautiful U2 song. I don't know why, but it's evoke so much feelings. I regret I didn't born earlier to hear this live.
It's true it has only 3 versions (From Three, from Boy, and from the National Stadium)?
Hehehe. It's nice to hear a video of them in their younger development stages. Bono's voice was abit tolerable during this time, but not since "Party Girl" I'm afraid. It seemed like he had a hard time opening up, or breaking his voice in. It's amazing how far they've come from this.
U2 was genius in the beginning. Now they are just better then good. I prefer Coldplay now, but as I told in the beginninge they were from another planet.
hey axblack, thanks for posting. but isn't this version from the My Hometown show at Dublin National Stadium on Feb. 26, 1980? they sound eerily similar.
I heard this version on some mp3 website that said it was from the '80 gig. Who knows if it was correctly labeled, though--would be much cooler if it were from '79. Thanks for posting!
I wish the album version was the same as this ...

Unbelievable! At first I didn't even recognize my favourite U2 song. They sound almost like a punk band here.

very interesting to hear it the way it was written and performed for 2 years, before Lillywhite got his hands on it.

This version is from months before boy was released. This is more like it was in the demo version when it was a more up tempo song.

Correction Zero Bono never sounds bad....
Second of all he's fucking 18 here... no 18 yr olds come up with this genius music today so I'd think twice before trying to criticize.
Period.
crazylikeafool 4 years ago
just to mention, he's full on 19 years old here, Bday May 10, 1960, this is 1980

I agree with U ... he is brilliant here! The Edge guitars too!

I was told it was from the 17/02/1979 gig but it could be wrong. I haven't heard the 26/02/1980 gig so you could be right!
