  • I wish the album version was the same as this ...

  • Unbelievable! At first I didn't even recognize my favourite U2 song. They sound almost like a punk band here.

  • gimmie u2 between 1980-85; f the rest afterwards.

  • whoa! I never knew they actually performed this song on stage! This has got to be rare!

  • great!!!

  • The progression/ the boys are good.

  • very interesting to hear it the way it was written and performed for 2 years, before Lillywhite got his hands on it.

  • @Coldacre Their first recording / rendition of this song was in late 1978, it was a sort of 'soft metal' style. This vid is of the second rendition. The Boy album version is the third rendition.

  • that pic that i uploaded on my bebo account it's strange\plz reply

  • This is my FAV U2 song, and it blows my mind that I was literally not even a year old when this was recorded....

  • My favourite ever u2 song !

  • Does anyone have a date on this ramshackle version of a great song? Not on anyone of my 80s Italian bootlegs.

  • Eles são os melhores!

  • ..Bono's voice is so cute. It's not like this on my album.../: (

  • "dim the lights, we feel embarassed" aha i love that :P

    greatttt song, usual

  • love the drums on the boy version, reni deffo had them in mind on bye bye badman, (stone roses) for the americans out there.

  • I LOVE THIS BAND SO MUCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Natonal stadium Dublin. I have the whole concert (audio).

  • ONE of the Best U2 melodies ever in my opinion ...great whistle too very Rockman! Raw Honest Pure U2 Talent!

  • sounds like one of those Megaman enemy sound tracks.. was it Bombman? those Japanese video game makers...

  • Simply awesome é_é

  • I love U2 more than most, but I've gotta say, I'm a little disappointed in the live version of this song. I mean, on the album it's so dark and atmospheric and dream-like, and here it's so... pop. I mean, it's cool but it's just not the same. The album version is much better, I think.

  • This version is from months before boy was released. This is more like it was in the demo version when it was a more up tempo song.

  • The original demo version was way different than this, kinda like sludgy soft chordal metal. Shadows actually has three distinctive renditions, all by U2. Basically, there was the 1978 version - the original, the '79-'80 version which is this one, and then the Boy version, 1980, which was never played out live, - too studioey.

  • It's a very early song and it needs a little expertise, but for me it's the most beautiful U2 song. I don't know why, but it's evoke so much feelings. I regret I didn't born earlier to hear this live.

It's true it has only 3 versions (From Three, from Boy, and from the National Stadium)?

  • Correction Zero Bono never sounds bad....

Second of all he's fucking 18 here... no 18 yr olds come up with this genius music today so I'd think twice before trying to criticize.

    Period.

  • just to mention, he's full on 19 years old here, Bday May 10, 1960, this is 1980

  • I agree with U ... he is brilliant here! The Edge guitars too!

  • It´s really very strange and Bono sounds sometimes bad... but I like this version:) u2 are simply the best!!!

  • U R right 2

  • Is Bono singing in a british punk accent??!! Very imititave of the scene of the time

  • Hehehe. It's nice to hear a video of them in their younger development stages. Bono's voice was abit tolerable during this time, but not since "Party Girl" I'm afraid. It seemed like he had a hard time opening up, or breaking his voice in. It's amazing how far they've come from this.

  • U2 was genius in the beginning. Now they are just better then good. I prefer Coldplay now, but as I told in the beginninge they were from another planet.

  • Well, of course they were genius. "Boy" is an example of that. XD

Hey, Coldplay is pretty good and out there, can't wait until their next album comes out. :3

  • This is my favourite u2 song.Thanks

  • a rare treat indeed... thank you so much for uploading

  • Yes - Feb 1980. This is the gig that got them signed by Island Records.

  • Thanks for that!

  • this song was named after a chapter in the book Lord of The Flies, Shadows and Tall Trees

  • hey axblack, thanks for posting. but isn't this version from the My Hometown show at Dublin National Stadium on Feb. 26, 1980? they sound eerily similar.

  • I was told it was from the 17/02/1979 gig but it could be wrong. I haven't heard the 26/02/1980 gig so you could be right!

  • I heard this version on some mp3 website that said it was from the '80 gig. Who knows if it was correctly labeled, though--would be much cooler if it were from '79. Thanks for posting!

  • Just downloaded the full bootleg on another site--yes it is from the 26/02/80 National Stadium gig.

  • @axblack just to confirm this is the February 26, 1980 gig for sure not 1979

  • Fantastico!

  • One of my favorite U2 songs of all time...such a rare treat to hear it live...geez 1979! They didn't play this live very often at all. Awesome!

  • I agree 100%

  • Hey thanks Axblack you are the greatest

  • I've always wanted to hear this song live. It's my favorite off the Boy album. Thanks Ax!
