  • THE CAKE IS A LIE

  • The flattr button has been visible on a gaming site for over 2 months and only 5 people has pushed it.

  • Here on YT the most creative video makers get money for the amount of subscribers/creations from YT. I think they also get money for having commercials on their vids? Then if i like it i simply click the like button to show my appreciations. Which for me is a better way of showing my appreciations, since i am a very poor woman who hasn`t got a lot of money to "play" around with. Or else i would happily spend some dimes on products i think are well made.

  • Don`t mean to sound totally negative, i am speaking for those who might not have much money to spare and only use it for what is necessary. Its not fair to give poorer people a bad conscience because they can`t show their appreciation by paying money for it. Sometimes i feel as if the creator should have some money.

  • I guess this idea works better for people who are used to the "tipping" culture.

  • i am skeptic about this idea because poor people will not pay, so its divided.

I am thinking that if you want to earn money you have to sell something. Its a little like giving money to all the street performers in the streets. In the end no money left!. What i do think works is an entrance fee to the most popular sites.

  • Could it be Pizza?

I think where the story ends is when it comes to the small fee.

  • This video is so patronizing because of the lame cake metaphor.

  • Fat kids will use Flattr alot...

  • The cake is a lie.

  • is that a switchfoot song i hear in the background? :)

  • Facebook "like" button but, with cake slices ? Nice ;-)

  • what's the song ????

  • And what about common sense?

What is the maximum amount money a content provider can receive?

When is too much money simply _too much_?

    Money corrupts.

Why should someone/something have too much?

This "simple" questions deserve answers. And I presume our current money system will not provide solutions.

  • @mahatmaBit

Jesus Christ, "why should someone/something have too much"? Because I want him to have all this money and create more wonderful things? It's called 'cooperation', man. If you do good things, you get money for them, that's quite normal for me. Forcing people to stop buying, let's say Nike shoes, if they like them only to limit corporation's earnings in the name of some kind of strange egalitarism is sick. It's called 'communism' and we've been through this a long long time ago.

  • I WOULD FLATTR THIS VIDEO

  • Cake or Death?

  • The funny thing with this video is that the person talking is one of Sweden's most famous hip-hop artist :)

  • But... but the cake is a lie.

  • @ryu3180

    L

    O

  • so... you give money to people for the amount of buttons you click?

    AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH

  • For the past 10 years or so as the internet has grown, the main payment readers gave was generally comments and feedback. For me, the payment is the pleasure knowing that I might have connected with someone I might not otherwise have. I might do this for my timelapses though.

  • I'm surprised Google hasn't tried to buy them out yet. Pretty cool idea though, if you can get everyone doing it, I can see it becoming big :D, just remember to advertise it rite!! :D would end up being better then so many people don't have to create pay-pal donate able boxes.

  • here is the death of freedom and the new age of imprisonment by money and debt

  • @Draxxincornus ? wrong vid man, go to zeitgeists page.

  • Great idea. You just pay once whatever you like per month? and then share whenever and whereever you feel like giving. This seems genuinely supporting the spirit of giving.

  • I love this idea. There are so many blogs I follow, yet they have no idea how much I appreciate them.

  • Wow.. This is great!

  • for a swedish your english is very good

  • @Seyss0 for a scanian, his english is very good.

  • The future is not about forcing people to pay for what they like :

The future will be about giving back for the enjoyment, fun and value to a persons life.

The paradigm will shift soon ; Good luck Flattr!

  • Brilliant idea. I hope you will make it nearly as popular as Facebook.

There are lots of artists, that will appreciate this tool. But you have to make it attractive for users to pay/donate to the creators. For instance you can make a list of top-10 donators for people who donate the most, and their profile should show how generous they are, so that there is a prestige in donating to the artists. But keep on brainstorming! Wonderful plans you have there.

  • Got my invite today, this could be the next really big thing in the internet, maybe bigger than Google. I came.

  • to every bastard that gave thumbs down can go and eat dogshit

  • Jag är stolt svensk just nu ^^ bra ide!

  • This idea is too good to dismiss. I hope this takes off.

  • nice idea!

  • Sign me up!

  • So basically you're tipping the content creators for content you already get for free. I appreciate the good thoughts, but the human being is much more selfish than this.

  • @brightshadows13 But people have to pay in order to make money, and they have paid already so there's no cost in clicking the button.

  • @brightshadows13 Well if a bunch of people like your contest, you could end up with a lot of money as well. Think of it like that.

  • What music?

  • Sounds cool but I wonder what flatter will want in exchange for this service. Would they charge a small fee? Or would they collect our data for market research and sell them to marketeers? Just wondering...

  • WIN.

  • btw if i had a birthday cake, i eat it al at myself :d

if the creaters want a cake, they just have to make one at there own.

  • nerds :d

  • C'mon, c'mon, this is brilliant, it's exactly what I want! I'm sick of not being able to pay the music artists I love without doing being robbed by the record labels or digital stores.

Let's go Flattr, I'm waiting for the Beta invitation...

  • I want to interpret it this way: Its not about buying and selling, but about giving and getting!

  • Här formar vi internets framtid, bästa som sverige klämt ur sig på åratal!

  • this is absolute genius !!!!

  • I really hope you can set the fee yourself. If it's too much I'm not going to be using it. :/

  • i think the lowest fee was around 2$ or something, but im not sure

  • @Erfa90 yes you can, a minimum of 2 euros

  • anyone know what the fee is?

  • i have a feeling that this is gonna be revolutionary

  • Cookie!

  • i want cake :C

  • So, this is like Bit Torrent but for money? Getting the content is like leeching but the micropayments are like seeding; it's not much, but when enough people are doing it at once it makes a huge difference.

  • I had EXACTLY THE SAME Idea.

  • I love this idea!

  • Now getting anything in return? People do tip waiters don't they? All they do is bring you your food, that you've paid for anyway. Creators on the internet give you a lot more in my experience. And it's definitely a voluntarily thing to "flattr" them...

  • To be honest I don't really like the idea of tipping at all; I don't get paid extra to give better customer service - so why should they? Anyway - a lot of the time the tips go towards the owner; so the waiters don't even see much of it! Basically the prices would just be artificially inflated by these 'tips' and we'd just end up paying more! I don't think that if I sent 10p to a millionaire artist on top of a £10 album or whatever I'd bought would make the slightest bit of difference.

  • @AndrewMarshall90 this is not directed towards the small handfull of milionaire artists. It's for the bulk of creators who get NOTHING for all their creativity. There are many many of us and we deserve to eat, too.

  • @AndrewMarshall90 Then just don't tip, if you don't like it.

  • @bakacup actualy waiters are typically paid less than minimum and the tips make up the difference. Cab drivers and hair dressers rent their chairs and cabs. Entrepreneurs like this need the tips.

  • @bakacup

I'm guessing you've never waited tables...

  • THE CAKE IS A LIE!!!

  • yea brokep shouldve thought of this before the startup, im sure he knew!

  • Comment removed

  • Great idea!

  • how can I get an account ?

  • The genius Peter Sunde is rocking on!

  • Intressant...

  • Looks like a very good idea, I hope it takes off. I would definitely pay a monthly amount to give out to free software, photo, and movie creators (think vodo).

  • Brilliant

  • So f'ing awesome!!!!

  • this is an awesome idea.

but what if i distribute someone elses content as my own and get rich from donations?

    isn't that a little "loophole"?

  • I think you're right that there's a potential loophole there. But, I also believe that people quickly finds out that it's not your content and therefor quit giving you donations and will even brand you as a cheater.

  • so I would pay for this amazing photo of this cute cat I just saw ?

    I feel very motivated !

  • the cake is a lie!

  • i like the sound of this, and i hope it works too. but are people willing to sign up and pay when they dont have to?

  • This is really the major flaw I see with the idea. I'm not sure I can see this taking off when we still have the good old Paypal Donate.

  • Consider this: what if I made my blog readable to only Flattr users? This means you had to be registered with Flattr before you could download my content. I wouldn't force you to click my button, but I (and hundreds of other blggers) would force you to be signed up with Flattr. Premium content for Flattr users. Even if you don't donate, you get to read the content simply because you're a Flattr member.

  • But as as the blogger you arnt guarenteed to get any donations still but your audience is still limited to the people who are paying Flattr members. I just don't see it beating advertisements.

  • Cool! :)

  • goddam it this guy is a genius

  • Paying with cake???? Really??? How will u get it delivered??? Good luck with that!!

  • Brilliant idea. :)

  • @Everflamen Sounds waaaaaaaaaaaay too much like Revver. I'm wary.

  • thecakeisalie.jpg

like this stuff, wated a long time for this, gj boys!

  • Pure genius! Make it live asap.

  • ID Youtube= RQ5ACmbhORs

Here we are the version with subtitles ñ_ñ

  • mmmm si tan sólo pudieramos adaptarlo al sistema de impuestos...

  • Hmmm, interesting...

  • Är det Jason som snackar?

  • Yes! Hörde det först när han gick över till svenska.

  • @itcanbecheezcaketime

I think the idea is that you'll be able to reward the creators of content you're currently enjoying for free, if you so choose. People like you will choose not to. You will probably be in the majority.

But with any luck a large enough minority who respect the work that people put into providing entertainment & information will want to help them out by using this service.

  • NOOOOOOOOOO THE CAKE IS A LIEE!!!

  • The cake is a lie... anyway the system looks ok, i wonder if it will succeed.

  • love this new system, thankyou

  • I like it and would use it.

  • Pretty cool app. I hope it will become a success.

  • Not bad because I already use netflix and I don't like it. I would prefer a broader range of content and media from flattr instead of netflix. Flattr could give me movies, music, art and porn - all in one place. Gotta love that.

  • Wrong, I don't think flattr will distributed media or content. Each creator will continue to do so in the traditional ways.

Flattr will just help distribute money among them.

  • I stand corrected. Though, I'm not exactly sure how they're going to put a flattr button in my torrent. After all, that's where the problem is, right? That's where they need to put a flattr button, but I don't see that going over too well. I sure won't be flattr'ing anything I can get easier and higher quality elsewhere. So if they think I'll be flattr'ing youtube and college humor videos, they're sorely mistaken.

I wonder how this will pan out.

  • One of the cut outs in this vid dose not get any cake :-(

  • Poor guy :(

  • @kennylex I noticed that also, someone didn't get cake, and one girl only got 1/100th of cake.

  • Think of fraud opportunities, fish accounts and then provide donations to your own Flattr accounts.

  • @mednos... yeah... and donate your own money?

  • haha that was smart!

    Great explainer as well!

  • It's like digg for handing out money. Simple, Yet brilliant.

  • I actually really like this. I get to support favourite bands, blogs and what have you and give them an incentive to keep creating content that I'll enjoy.

What I would not like to see is everyone creating their own versions instead of tying it into one site. Like YouTube doing their own donation system and some newspaper having another.

I doubt the various industries will go for this though. They have a strong tendency to jump over the dollars to get to the pennies.

  • The industries will not like this. Good-bye publishers, good-bye middlemen. Flattr eliminates the need for a conventional distribution infrastructure. Customers can now directly pay content creators.

  • Not a bad idea. As a developer of original content myself, it would be nice to maybe make a few $ here and there. I doubt anyone would get rich out of this, but I think that's the whole point!

  • SusaHumor, the "whole point" is that no one would get rich from this?

    LOL at your stupid ass.

  • if this system catches on, we all win:

say youtube gets this, and then picasa albums, then flickr, facebook, blogs, charities, online magazines, news, articles u find and you enjoy, well-written articles...

and say this fee is easily affordable, how many times will you click? How many people spend time online enjoying content posted by people like you and me?

Make content, even if super-simple. It'll be yours, and people liking it, it's your investment for the future. Start now, today.

  • I often ponder the problem described here, the same problem facing all traditionally-lucrative creative content industries (and let's face it, the jobs of many people who are not just rich executives and can't be easily criticized as greedy). The monolithic models of yore are failing, as are attempts to reshape them to fit the new mediums of distribution. I often come to a conclusion similar to the model that Flattr is attempting. I support this and will participate.

    Good luck, Flattr.

  • I hate to be a troll but Peter Sunde forgot his roots... I used to hear compensation to distributors... I listened to this 3 or four times and It sounds like its being dropped... distribution is actual quantifiable work that should be compensated as well...

  • @DudeOfX

What are you talking about. If you have an artist/distributor in a relationship, it will be the distributor who sets up the flattr button and collects the payments.

Regarding a youtube subscription, no I wouldn't sign up. The whole point is that any content producer that wants to get paid, can put up a button anywhere. If it is tied to youtube, that means I would have get another account for site X and another for site Y. And that defeats the whole purpose of a flat fee system.

  • @wildclaw2

the job of setting up the flattr buttons would be a publicist/agent. A distributor is the individual who *shares* the bandwidth to deliver the content.

compensation for distribution in the bittorrent world would be revolutionary. It would put breaks in pirating cause people would get greedy and put tolls on their seeds the same way they put google adds everywhere.

  • I mean seriously... YouTube has this 5 star rating system... now lets say it starts to charge $2 a month and it would distribute that money according to how many stars we gave out... The more stars a video gets the more money it gets... whats revolutionary about that? Would you subscribe to youtube for $2 a month because of that?

  • Would you subscribe to a site that has hollywood budget videos, or Professionally produced Music, or e-books?

Eh eh? I'm sure you would pay that 2 dollars.

  • @Lastknownuser

yes, people will pay $30, it would be on demand cable TV, but the Flattr system is a donation scheme. Professionals don't work for donations.

  • what? It sounds like you are dropping compensation to distributors... I'd be very disappointed with Mr Sunde.

It would be no different then a subscription service. It would not be revolutionary cause ideas like that are already around.

The revolutionary part of all this was suppose to be compensation for distributors. Thats what BitTorrent is about, distribution by the people...

You tube can implement an idea like this with ease... how many people would stick around if it charged $2 a month?

  • Great initiative. You know it has to be good with Peter Sunde aboard.

  • Great Stuff!

  • F***king finally!!

  • really nice idea, wondering if it's going to be a great success or .. not

  • nice idea get a beta up

  • This begs the question whether you give or should get cake if you get Portal this way. o.O

  • now i'm hungry ;/

  • wtf? is this a cake sharing program?

  • hahahahaha

  • Really cool idea. :)

  • That's really great =)))

  • What is the background music ?

    /Cali

  • I'd like to know too :)

  • Salem - It's Only You, Pt. II

  • @hellmano thank you :D

  • Anyone?

  • wow, very great idea. it rocks !!

  • No doubt inspired by Kachingle, but a great concept none the less.. :)

  • great idea

  • This would probably make it a shitload easier to donate for me. Instead of donating specific amounts to people, risking to overdo my donation budget, i can now insert the entire donation budget and just click!

  • great. :)

  • Sounds good!

    Låter roligt!

  • who will be judge of plagiarism ?

  • eeeexcellent
