Back in the 80's this interview was done for french tv program "cinema/cinemas " mainly devoted to the Golden age of Hollywood fims and led by one of the top American Film & Rock Music Expert : Philippe Garnier
Sterling Hayden, I would have loved to hang out with him. He was the coolest dude in the world. He worked with Joan Crawford once, and this what he said about her, " I wouldn't work with her again for all the money in the world. And I love money!" Haha
He wrote one hell of a novel, Voyage: A Novel of 1896. If you love reading and the sea, this is the book for you. A bare-knuckled, brawling, sprawling, profane, pungent, politically-incorrect tour de force.
What a fascinating interview of a wonderfully creative individual. A man of many talents (actor, writer, sailor, etc)! I had no idea that he spend the last part of his life up in the Bay Area! Dig that crazy goatee! Strictly from hipsville, daddy-o! He was quite the individualist.,..lived by his own rules & did things his own way. THANKS for sharing this informative & entertaing footage with us! :)
No, Sterling died of Prostate Cancer in 1986, three years after this interview was filmed. Sterling was one of a kind- kind of a maverick- which is probably why he never became a superstar.
In the beginning of his book, "Wanderer," which I"m reading right now he describes his abode as being in Sausalito (Marin County) on the North end of the Golden Gate Bridge.
He also had other residences at the same time.... one was in Paris.
Which location are you speaking of? I don't know of a San Francisco home. How did you find it? And as for value, the ONLY residential house in San Francisco worth less than a million bucks is a tract home....
SH what a character, and for a guy who didn't "Know what he was doing".....a MORE than competent actor. He fell into the Class with the best of them.and STILL is in his OWN class..one in a Million. These Punk sissy boy actors TODAY waste My electricity!
And he 'ran his own life' without being stupid, acting stupid, and living stupid.... as today's "leading" actors do. Look at Sean Penn.... a good actor. AND THATS ALL. His pretend 'tough guy' routine has worn really, really thin. But thats all he's got. Put him in a routine job, say construction, and he couldn't hack it. He'd wimper and whine and snivel. But Sterling Hayden had a rough working life.... his acting was a cake walk.... he didn't even like it.
Sorry - apparently YouTube has been deleting all my "part 2" videos.... Pretty nonsensical of them since they left all my "part ones" standing... I'll try and put them back on asap :)
This is great stuff, thank you so much for posting it!!! I said this in a comment on part 2 but I've been looking for the 1983 interview/ documentary about Hayden Leuchtturm des Chaos (Lighthouse of Chaos) for a long time now. This is the first similar interview I've come across, I only wish it was longer. Thank you for posting this!!!
He might have been drunk... seriously thanks so much for posting this. Sterling Hayden was an awesome dude, an even better writer then an actor. I wish I could have met him.
hes smoking a joint! Good for him!

Got arrested with Mr. Hayden at a Civil Rights sit-in in San Francisco in '64. Cadillac Row sit-in on Van Ness. Great days.
Good guy.
Compare him with the Hollywood pansies of today.

Hayden's house is in San Francisco, not Sausalito, which in Marin County, across the bay. I'd say it's easily worth a million-plus.

Seems like an unfair assessment unless you actually know Sean Penn.

j2f125: Rather than challenge what I said, wouldn't it be easier for you to refute it if you knew anything about Sean Penn?
He lives near me. Among the stupidity the neighbors chatter about.... his jogging.... AFTER he sucks on his tobacco stick. Stupid, ignorant behavior.

Read his ''The Voyage''
The best maritime novel ever written.
Even better than Melville and Conrad.
