  • Very nice.

  • Amazing. One of the very finest pianists of our time TY tompik for posting.

  • Amazing Pianist

  • VERY nicely done! I can hear ALL the notes instead of a blur of phrasing and pedal like so many others. Bravo.

  • This guy's a genius!

  • best sound ever

  • Em que ano se deu este concerto?

  • wonderful playing...

  • I love the fact he plays on a dinner chair (@ 0:33).... the same dinner that everyone seems to be using!

  • All of you are right about Sokolov, he is well-known but still very underrated, as he is clearly one of the very best in the world at any repertoire he plays. You listen to him play a Beethoven sonata and he sounds like the best living Beethoven player, then he plays Prokofiev and Rachmaninoff better than Kissin. As a pianist I think the raising of the hands is his way of dissipating muscular tension - edmoore, you're right - this would sound glorious with good engineering!

  • They really shouldn't have locked the sound engineer in that carpet bag.

  • Amazing how high he can lift his hands while the sound stays good. He must be a master in pedaling.

  • awesome! TY

  • Bravo Sokolov... Such wonderful playing...

  • He makes it so much more interesting, so much more personal.

This music is burdoned with a heavy filter of tradition regarding performance. Sokolov penetrates that filter!

  • Have had his Beetop.106 and never listened to it.Petri& Serkin were enoughi guess. But every posting of this man here is fabulous imaginative .His Rameau fingers alone cant do this! His Prok, his bflatmin sonata the d min prelude.Everything shows a fantasticalmind. He is as interesting as Pogo should have becomebut he has been around for decades. His son is too sexy but noone can equal son pere!

  • who is his son?

  • absolutely right!!! Sokolov is from another planet!!! I mean , it seems like if he might have a brain for every single finger!!, besides, his sound is marvelous!!!, thanks a lot for sharing

  • Interesting to hear Sokolov's version. I have only been listening version that Rahmaninov himself plays. Quite different, tempo is quicker for example in R:s version.

  • wow... I feel this performance as if the piece was written by Bach... such transparent... Splendid!

  • Un authentique public de mélomanes et un fabuleux pianiste: ça déchire sa mèèèèèère.............

  • Astounding... breathtaking

What an unbelievable technical discipline he has ... precise and clear as a diamond

thank you tompilk for sharing this...

  • Il y a Sokolov, et il y a les pianistes. (Le Figaro, 2007) - There are great pianists, Krystian Zimerman, Lang Lang etc., but Sokolov comes from another planet...

  • @espirito999

No, doubt about Sokolov, but, hey guy, have you got any ears? LangLang and Zimerman? This is as far as it could be!

  • @youququq

Now you have mentioned my 3 favourites...

  • @espirito999

To my knowledge there is no recording of Zimerman of the Rach 3. Do you have one?

LangLang and Sokolov are quite two extremes... extreme introvert Sokolv and spectacular showmaster LangLang...

  • @youququq yeah, but i can't seem to understand why you put them in the same sentence....

  • really wish he could come to Canada for a performance!!!

  • What a gorgeous pianist! Why doesn't he have the fame and name recognition of a Lang Lang? Wrong ethnicity?

  • good question...

  • Sokolov doesn't play outside of Europe (very rarely), and the only recordings of him are live ones which has to be authorized by him (or bootleg). You could say wrong ethnicity for the times we are in...

  • GS reduced Concertos: "... it's not easy to find an orchestra which is interested in the final product and not looking at their watch. (...) If you play a solo piece (...) you will develop, going to another level, But (...) with each orchestra (...) you must start again. If you spend so much energy you could use much more effectively for recitals, why do you do it? I like (..) that everything depends only on me. With 100 people it's almost impossible. You have not the responsibility." (Wiki)

  • Zimerman said the same thing.

  • He's got a great name recognition among the pianists and in the world of music in general. Lang Lang is an instrument of chinese propaganda. They cannot being compared and who dares to do so is an ignorant. Cheers.

  • Agree with you completely about Lang "squared"! He's everything that's wrong with musical performance today.

    I

  • the fame and recognition are not the factors of a good pianist, that are the factors of showmen. Btw, Sokolov won Tchaikovsky competition.

  • and won it at the age of 16(!)

  • excellent. shame about the sound quality.

  • Not bad, but a bit dry.

  • today 100 years of being composed this concerto!!

  • it's just you

  • gee, when was this concert? he is so young! and he plays gorgeous.

  • much slower than Horowitz plays it - gives it a totally different feel. Both deserve very much respect and admiration! Even My old accompanist - graduate of the royal college of music and a great modern composer- wouldn't even attempt this. Mark of a truly great pianist to do this such justice. One of my fav pieces of music of late!

  • How old is he?

  • Such clear playing, Incredible!

  • He is so young here. Weird hair too.

  • It is time that you have a better interest than his hair - for goodness sake !!!

  • Too great performance, full of russian soul, mystery, lyrism and masterfully piano.

  • Notice with what delicacy he sings the upper voice. Each note is so carefuly 'calculated' in its intensity, that the result resembles human speach. A very beautiful cantabile indeed.

  • Sokolov is in great control again. The hallmark of Sokolov's playing is its beauty, stability and its technical discipline. It is evident that he feels every note of this piece and so do I.

  • Whoa! What year is this from?

  • sokolov Grigory Sokolov... is a god of the piano

  • Man can lift his feets if plays like that:=) I don't know much about classical music but I'll enjoy more about colourfull pianists than sitting like stone.

Any recommendations of good classical music? (chopin-style is allready my favourite)

  • If you like Chopin, I would recommend more Rachmainoff. His second concerto is about as amazing as the third, and more easily accessible for a new listener imo. You might also try Liszt, though he can get weird at times. You should recognize his second Hungarian Rhapsody. Also, Tchaikovsky, Debussy, Carmina Burana by Orff, Richard Strauss (not Johann, though he is also good), and you could try Mahler, though his works are ginormous. Message me if you want more.

  • If you want reccomendations:

-Rachmaninov concert nº1 (similar to Chopin)

-Rachmaninov concert nº 2 and 3

-Morceaus de salon opus 10(very similar to Chopin music)

-Pieces opus 11(similar to opus 10)

    -Russian rhapsody(too beautiful)

    -Cello sonata opus 19

    -Sonata nº2 opus 36

    Greetings and enjoy!

  • che vuol dire sto commento?

  • For johan361

  • Quelle fabuleuse sonorité!

  • you're supposed to be LISTENING!!! The video is an added bonus...

  • Nah....The visual aspect is part of the performance, otherwise we'd just be listening to CDs.

I like his unique visual expressiveness. For example, I find his Beethoven Pastoral to be unremarkable without the "show", which is really a passionate exegesis on the music and makes for a special performance. But I can definitely understand someone being bothered by it.

  • What a stupid comment!

  • Why do you breath so much?

  • @Grigor99 Have you ever played the piano: it requires some energy, don't you know ! and you are supposed to listen. Mr Sokolov is not making a show of himself: In concert he serves music, not the way he looks!!! A GENIUS, that 's what he his.

  • @Grigor99 guess he doesn t want the notes to stay playing.

  • @Grigor99 cos he's not really playing it!

  • Fantastic!

  • rmo2128 plays with himself when he listens to music... but, he is telling the truth about the free recording of Sokolov playing the Rach 3 live from the proms. CHECK IT OUT!!! It is the best recording I own of it, and I have a lot.

  • You can get Sokolov playing the Rach 3[for free] from the Proms

    at InternetArchive

then type sokolov and it will say

    Rach3 and Fantasy

  • the best

  • grigory sokolov - best pianist of all times!

  • Superb! Bravo! TY.

  • he was so young at this time!

he's the best pianist of the moment for me

  • Russian music & especially Rachmaninov ...is really deep, sad & sincere...Rachmaninov was a very closed person ,full of pride &people who play his music too sweet, exagerated & superficious r idiots!SOKOLOV is 1 of the best musicians EVER!deep& sincere!FANTASTIC!THANK YOU TO EXIST!

  • Richteristhebest!!! You are my hero, finally someone who talks sense. Sokolov is genius :) And so is Sergey Rachmaninoff!

  • You mention richter....kinda strange, isn't it that he never recorded this work. I'm sure he KNEW it, perhaps played it in concert, but no records by him, right?

  • no he didn't play it at all; he said something like, Gilels already played it perfect, so there is nothing more to be added there by me(Richter himself).

  • Thx for yr comment, you said exactly what has to be said about Rachmaninov and about this concerto in particular. Sokolov is not only one of the greatest pianists in activity, he is as you said the gist of sincerity, devoted entirely to his art.

  • Which is the orchestra?

  • I like Sokolov pretty much, but I must recognise this performance doesn't equal Martha Argerich's, who gave the best interpretation of this concerto in my opinion.

  • You have some truth in your words, Sokolov's performance can't be equal to Martha Argerich's. Sokolov's performance is beyond the horizon of secular interpretations.

  • Don't misunderstand me: I'm not saying Sokolov's interpretation is bad. The simple fact he CAN play this dreadfully difficult concerto gives much credit to him. I'm just saying that, on this particular piece, he doesn't bring me as much emotion as Martha Argerich does. But I love Sokolov on many other works, like Ravel's "Le Tombeau de Couperin" for example :)

  • dEFINITELY TRUE !

  • but Argerich is worse David Helfgott

  • I wish you understand the true warmth of Sokolov in some day. Sokolov's Soul will bless You.

  • Why did you go to 3 more if you did not like the first one???

  • I have never encountered a comment with such a lack of thought. Although I recognize each word in it, the comment leaves me completely unintelligible. And I have seen more than four comments by you.:)

  • Amazing well played, sounds a bit like a russian music-box,specially the begining theme, is like a remember of my childhood and the music-boxes.

  • What impressive pianist!!!

...i never have listen this music line, more and more unknow notes . marvellous touch.

For me, Sokolov in the OLIMPO's PIANIST!!!!!!!!!

  • I agree!! same for me...im discovering the unkown notes...and it's incredible!!

  • Thank you for an opportunity to get to know the younger Sokolov, today's top living pianist!!!!

  • THANK YOU!

  • Where did you found this amazing video?!

Sokolov is the best pianist ever existed!!

  • I love Russian Pianism. But I think there was no one like Grigory Sokolov ever existing. For me, even legends like Richter and Gilels were not even closed to Grigory Sokolov's aura.

  • I partially agree. But don't forget Vladimir

    Sofronitzky....

  • A recital by Grigory Sokolov is like a vision of a lost age of Russian pianism. bravo bravo bravo!!!!!!!!!

  • thanks so much.

  • It is nice to read your comment hier.I love every single tone of this pianist, what a musician!

  • thank you very much!
