All the franchise went downhill after this KOF.. All the original KOF magic dissapeared, the classic characters were left aside, just Kyo and Iori with their never-ending fight continued. SNK and then Playmore started to introduce crazy stupid characters just for the sake of it and leaded the story to nowhere (Angel, K9999, Duo Lon, Shen, Malin, Elizabeth and finally Ash just to name a few)
This was the start of the DM obsession in later KOF games, so much focus in flashy cocky super powerful DM
My only complaint about this game is that the boss is just too damned hard. I can't even close in to land a few solid hits. I mean, it's telling about the difficulty that for a mid-boss, they just took the boss from the previous game, and made him tougher.
Rugal and Magaki are a frigging cakewalk compared to Igniz.
Great KOF intro. Just a shame that KOF 2001 is the worst in the series. The stages don't look that good and the music is just horrible. The artwork also makes the charactors like they have issues or something.

Piece of Shit ^2's intro has metal music, which is not bad. But, IMHO, the graphics are bland and say nothing.
I prefer this intro. It has a nice dark-ominous start to it and is melded in as part of the story, then a flashy switch across the contenders, as usual and a finish with K', explosive as ever.
I don't like the artwork on the arcade and the PS2 version of this game, I've seen better artwork from past KOF games like Shinkiro I wish he still works for SNK.
well yeah I agree about that! KOF2001 is far away from being the best in KOF series, even in arts. I just said that PS2 version arts are better than arcade ones. My favourite arts are in KOFXI, KOF99, KOF2000, KOF98 and KOF2002UM !!
Am I alone in this? Seems like people all like the PS2 version's intro AND artwork than the original version. I thought the original version's artwork and intro had way more pizazz!! :(

Hmm...it's definitely up there. KoF2K intro is also a favorite of mine.
Hell...almost all of them are great. It's part of what makes KOF so awesome.
