Now I'm a public schooler but I see nothing wrong with home schooling so long as the parents are responsible, I.E. they let the kids think for themselves on topics. I know a girl who is homeschooled and while her parents were christian they taught her the basics of most religions and theories of creationism and evolution and let her think for herself.
I think credentials are hugely important. Let's be honest, the majority of Americans are poorly educated (aka stupid). Give the kids a damn chance not to be one of you. Just give them a chance.
The responsibility of raising and educating children doesn't include the right to brainwash them into a religious cult, even if it's the popular cult of Jesus Christ.
@FUCKyourGODmyth Actually, it does. Parents can instill whatever beliefs they want into their children. Parents, by law, make decisions for their children until age 18.
@silent072 --- I wasn't talking about legal rights dumbass. 150 years ago, slavery was legal in the US, but that didn't make it morally right. Don't confuse morality with legality. Most christians have a pretty twisted sense of morality. For example, most christians think there's something wrong with gay people. Gee, I wonder where they got an idea like that? Morality obviously doesn't come from following bronze-age instructions.
@FUCKyourGODmyth Rights and freedoms are more important to me than morals, which are subjective and change with time. Rights and freedoms SHOULD be a constant to all.
Like the right for parents to instill whatever beliefs they choose into their children. I personally am an atheist, and will teach my children as such, but I'm not going to go jamming my beliefs (or lack thereof) down the throats of religious people. Live and let live.
@silent072 --- "Rights and freedoms are more important to me than morals"
What rights and freedoms do you think you'd have in a morally bancrupt society? You're an idiot! You claim to be an atheist, but you sound more like a christian troll just pretending to be an atheist. While it's easy to fake being a stupid christian, it's pretty difficult to fake being an atheist. Atheists have real morals; their morality isn't dictated to them on stone tablets.
@FUCKyourGODmyth I don't know what rights and freedoms I'd have in a morally bankrupt society seeing as I don't live in one, but assuming that would be along the lines of many third world countries in Africa, I'd assume I'd have the right to do whatever the fuck I want, the world would just be a hell of alot more dangerous. You seem alot more hateful than most of the people you call morally bankrupt, maybe you should take a look in the mirror?
@silent072 --- "Like the right for parents to instill whatever beliefs they choose into their children"
It's not morally acceptable to brainwash your kids with whatever beliefs you choose. Your children aren't your property to mistreat however you please. Mentally abusing your kids is just as bad as physically abusing them.
You make me sick! You're a morally bankrupt fucktard!
Call it whatever you like, but instilling religious beliefs into children doesn't constitute mental abuse. Most of the people i know and am friends with are Christians, almost all of them are good people who have helped me out in a bind in the past. Hell, one of them even had a his church bring me food when i was unable to afford it. If they can get past religious differences, why can't you? Oh right, you're a hateful, mean-spirited person, the kind of person that gives atheists a bad name.
It is blatantly transparent as to why governments are opposed to homeschooling. Anyone with any intelligence knows that public education exists as a form of mind control, first and foremost. John Taylor Gatto was right, and I say that from a basis of direct personal experience.
“A primary purpose of the educational system is to train school children in good citizenship, patriotism and loyalty to the state and the nation as a means of protecting the public welfare.”
they cant! if they do they have to fit billions and billions of children into each school they would be failing horribly because the kids couldnt hear and then everyone is stupid we NEED HOMESCHOOL AND PRIVATESCHOOL DONT GET RID OF IT!
it's wrong to ban homeschooling, i was homeschooled, but these parents need to stop teaching religious crap during schooling. also i know alot of kids who are really behind in schooling because their parents don't do their jobs right.
These books are available in public schools because as "public" schools, children of all walks of life are present in the system...including children of homosexual families.
Those books are not there in indoctrinate. They are social stories meant to support those children whose parents are gay.
@SongflowerMari will it will be o.k. if the child parent where gay.. but it is not o.k. for elementary and middle school kids that have the straight parents.
.
i agree that they should the books to high school children.
Eww, "Daddy's WEDDING?!" This is utterly repulsive & I would vehemently oppose ANYONE trying to force this on my child as "education.". This is another indication that our society is morally bankrupty & turned its back on God. Homosexuals are a vocal MINORITY who insist on forcing the rest of us to embrace their sick lifestyle as "normal." By teaching this in our schools we are thumbing our noses in the face of God. This canNOT turn out well for us. This is exactly why I homeschool & I love it!
@bethsbabies It is tragic to hear that someone as shamefully ignorant as you have shown yourself to be here would be allowed to "school" their children.
@uN00b I am not sure what you are referring to as ignorant, but I will try to clarify for beth. There are things as a parent that we do not want our children to be taught is "right" or "worthy". One example would be witchcraft and the occult. Why should my child have to be brainwashed that these things are good when this is not the values of our family? As far as homosexuality, remember if it becomes too widespread, then we will become extinct as a species. Read Romans chapter one for more.
@dlandrews1 Except it won't become too widespread as it is not a choice, you think people CHOOSE to be gay and be harassed for the rest of their lives? If you do, you're a fucking idiot. You're attracted to the same sex or you're not, it's as simple as that.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints decided that it was important for Latter-day Saint kids to go to public schools in order to be exposed to the world while at the same time be able to have as much support as possible at home, church & in the Church educational programs (Seminary & Institute) to respond to the questions & problems of today's youth without isolating them in any way from society. "We teach them correct principles & let them govern themselves." Joseph Smith
Home schoolers are typically Evangelical & other traditional Christian groups who don't like the diversity that the American culture exposes their kids to. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints used to have private primary and secondary schools. They replaced them with the Seminary program (for High Schoolers) and the Institute program (for college students) which supported LDS kids while they were in public school. LDS kids even get time out from public school for seminary.
I am a University instructor and a very good one at that. I have taught at many different levels, and I say that any curriculum should have its basics approved by an appropriate board. Period. Homeschoolers do well because they get excellent attention and the best possible teacher to student ratio. Still, the question of content is just as important. Do you want your doctor homeschooled in surgery by his uncle? Any teacher must demonstrate that they are qualified. Try a post that's civil.
How silly. You cannot home school a child in surgery. The latest study out on homeschooled students show that they average 25 points higher than public schooled students regardless of whether or not their parents used 'school in a box' , unschooled, used living books, or a formal curriculum. And, neither the parents' education levels or income had a significant impact. Teachers still maintain that parents much be 'qualified' to home education, but I say the proof is in the pudding!
You're right about performance. A full-time 'tutoring' program does result in better scores, though some studies don't support your claims, particularly in math. What tests do the homeschooled have to take to assess their progress? Are they subject to all state and federal testing standards? What about No Child Left Behind? What about the breadth of the texbook content? Are certain areas omitted? Do they teach evolutionary genetics? Do they interpret history objectively? I don't know.
Hmmm.....I do have serious doubts as to whether or not standardized testing has improved education in this country. And, I don't believe that there is a 'right' or 'wrong' way to teach sequentially. For instance, my elementary aged children know the Pythagorean Theorem because we have studied Greek science and history. Not in a normal scope-and-sequence. Standardized testing required a standardized curriculum. We choose to study great people and great ideas, their discoveries, & applications.
For us, no textbooks, only real books. We do use a math curriculum (MEP). We teach evolutionary genetics, but we include the fact that there isn't a shred of proof for this faith-based view of the world. We read great works and allow the children to come to their own natural conclusion about history, gov't, economy, etc. Yes, there will be gaps, but there are gaps in any education. Would putting my children in PS guarantee a great education for them? Let the statistics speak for themselves :o)
I agree with the integrated methods vs the traditional, distinct subject area boundaries. I wonder, though about your statement regarding evolutionary theory. This suggests that the available evidence is not being accurately conveyed to the student, which brings up the question of what other information is being withheld or distorted to serve the teacher/parent's end. In short, I question not the method, which is superior, but whether the content is tailored to the parent's own goals.
Thank you for your kind words! Yes, the content that I present to my children is naturally be skewed towards MY world view, although we do study others. Is it the job of the state to police our individual worldviews? Respectfully, I'll eat my hat if you can show me proof of evolution! I present my faith to my children as faith (a belief in that cannot be proven) which they have a choice to accept of not (it's a God given choice) Do evolutionists present their faith as fact, with no evidence?
I plan to interview a high school technology teacher friend soon to get a little more detail on the public school environment. I find that freshman entering college are largely unprepared for the work, and I wonder how they received the grades sufficient to be accepted. As for evolution evidence, I honestly don't know where to begin. I am a skeptic by nature, but my study of the field has convinced me of its credibility. I don't deal with ultimate beginnings...only change in species over time.
Homeschooling should be required to submit materials for review by a curriculum board in order to ensure the education a child receives meets the minimum requirements of the public schools AND the materials are accurate. The public schools have many problems, and I can understand parents' consideration of the homeschool option. But, more often that not, homeschooling is done to immerse children in a religious tradition and to support that tradition above a well-rounded, accurate education.
You must be a public school teacher cuz its obvious 4 years of college didnt put a functional brain in ur head. Didnt u hear the reporter? He said public school teachers are the ones who are failing here and that even tho teachers have the certificate doesnt always mean they make the best teachers. I suggest u look up a book entitled, "Lies my Teacher Told Me ."
Don't doubt your statements about the woeful state of public schools. It's hard to learn in a war zone. Still, abandoning public education can't be more than a short-term fix. Reform of the system should come first, and perhaps a pull-out by many parents just might be the wake-up call for that reform. Finally, you don't have to make the barbaric comment that I don't have a functional brain in my head. I'll write it off to a genuine passion for the issue.
I'm enjoying your statements--you have a gift of debate that so many lack! Consider that public schooling used to be controlled by parents. Groups of parents hired a teacher to instruct their children. I do that now with my friends. Public schooling has grown to gigantic, unmanageable proportions. Extremely expensive, wasteful, perhaps even dangerous and harmful to many children. Homeschooling is a return to the way schooling was done for several thousand years.
Oh yeah and I don't think it's any of the Governments concern who homeschools their kids and who doesn't. It's a free country for the moment, I can see we're on the road to becoming a comunist country but, for the moment it's still a free country and we all have a choice to do things like this however we please!! I invite whoever has a problem with that to suck it!
