@originalsoulshatter : That's because they are based off of viking combat, where there is no chivalry. Also, Skallagrimms fights to entertain a crowd. Not that they aren't legitimate fighters.
I resently joined the SCA heavy list. (Participating for 4 months now) I must state it is much harder than it looks. The tiniest movement is all you need to present an opening and get your skull bashed in this. I have aslo competed in "Might and Metal" (live steel combat) and must say I prefer SCA.
I understand that everyone has a preference, and wish that you two gentleman would please be more civil. You each have a preference, and should be able to respect each other's opinions.
Thunar, Scallagrimm's group looks awesome, and I've seen similar groups. But the fact is they're playing live steel, and can't possibly use the extent of their speed, power or possible shots like the SCA. It's much easier to get hit hard in the SCA, where a stick won't cut you in half...
SCA combat is friggin' hard. I did one practice in my heavy harness and sold it off, now I'm working on another lighter one. I got killed.
I appreciate the compliment, but let me point out that we are using speed, quickness and footwork to make possible the shots we get. Pulling the blow on a (blunted, by the way) steel weapon doesn't mean we aren't hitting one another. We just don't stand there and swing at the easiest target to hit, the HEAD. It's entertainment, though very real, rather than a sport that anyone can do to some degree.
I am with NinjaArtz on this, If you think its easy come join the SCA and get autherized in heavy sword and sheild. I will gladly show you that fancy footwork aint all its cracked up to be. I am ussually a very planted fighter myself and I find I use less energy which means I can drag a fight out till they get tired then I have a opening.
If you people think this is so easy, Right now join up into the SCA get on your incredibly heavy armor and start fighting. I guarantee that you will lose every match you go into with that attitude.
I wouldn't join the SCA if THEY were paying people. Armor isn't that heavy once you've gotten use to it, and you have NO clue what my attitude is or why. Groups like mine began ten years ago, because of the tired, worn out SCA crap seen at events around our area....NO THANKS.
Everyone's got different opinions of the SCA. Before I got involved I was very interested in living history, and laughed at the SCA. I still like living history, but I've found members of the SCA who also admire accuracy in their portrayals. If you search hard, there's a place for everyone. The rest of the people just have to be ignored! ;)
It's always the same stance, the same attacks with swings and feints at the head with a STICK held the same way as the next guy. You make an opening through movement, not standing there "faking" out the guy with stuttering half steps and half swings. I mean why even be holding a shield if you can't even use it efficiently?
You make absolutely no sense. Have you never heard of feints or never read a fechtbuch? Ever heard of behourd combat using wood or whalebone batons? Instead of going around with a cob up your butt, read a book or too.
Firstly, I made perfect sense and YES, I've heard of feints dumbass, that's why I mentioned them in my comment above. I've read the books and done more than just what you see on my channel, so don't just asume I don't know anything.
I'm sure you meant "assume". Your sense is far less than perfect. We take head shots because those are what present themselves when someone is using a shield. Target of opportunity, if you will. The higher level fighters are using footwork, speed and quickness to create openings and angles. If what opens is a shot to the head, why does it piss you off that we take it? I find your hostility both mystifying and sad.
The easy comparison would be taking a street fighter and putting him up against a trained MMA fighter. That would be like taking one of your guys and putting them up against a Heavy SCA Combatant.
Don't get me wrong, what you do looks cool but for the most part I see Medieval Times style fighting. The only good move I have seen is when you have snatched the guys shield but we do that as well. Your seemed to have 0 muscle in his arm when you snatched.
When fighters get to a certain level it is the smallest movement or as you said fighting birds ( I would call if fast pecks) strike that will end the fight especially after a good set of fakes
as for Raphaeline's comment, these two fighters are very good, if you look at what they are doing you will see each of them trying to "fake" the other out with body movement.
The sword is not held above the head, it is held back and cocked ready to fire the next blow. Not many blows are struck because a good fighter knows it does no good to just flail at the other guy. Why throw a shot if the other will block it?
The position of the sword is dependant on any number of factors. First and foremost, What type of sword is it? Second, your opponent, His stance, weapons, Armor, percieved or known abilities. Third, your training, what school of combat you've been trained in. Fourth, terrain,...... It goes on and on. The is no true ONE WAY. To believe that is to narrow your view of the world and lessen the education you can derive from it.
@Dimitri0809 I don't think its manly to worry about whether you look manly enough.

You mean a "book or two"? Perhaps if you weren't a waterhead it would be easier to understand you...go get hit in the head some more.

You are a funny fellow. Instead of reading a book or two, all you can do is grouse about a typo. Good luck with all your bitterness.

This is such a horrible example of fighting! LOL... you guys look like fighting birds, pecking at each other :)

You should never be standing still in any kind of fight. Footwork is essential. Also, why do they hold thier swords above thier heads...?
bludbathmcgrath 5 years ago
You hold your sword over your head to keep the other guy from hitting you in the head. Duh. How do you hold your sword?
