Aged 40+, my wife has just discovered Margaret Rutherford, and loves the Miss Marple films. For me, the theme music has always been a favourite, ever since I was a boy. I can remember placing a cassette recorder by the TV, and trying to tape it. I think the blend of classic strings, harpsichord, and 60's rhythm had probably always influenced my taste in music. Stands the test of time and is a fitting tribute to Ron Goodwin.
Marvellous stuff. Margaret Rutherford's indomitable Miss Marple wipes the floor with more modern takes, and anyone who can rock a harpsichord like Ron Goodwin deserves praise.
The Margaret Rutherford Miss Marple films were made at MGM's British studios at Elstree. They closed in 1969 due to financial problems. Some fine productions were made there with British talent ( David Tomblin, for example, who was assistant director on some of the Marples went on to greater things with filmed TV series like Danger Man - aka Secret Agent - and The Prisoner) . Google & Wiki for details. Ron Goodwin was amazing. He could create a score for any kind of movie. Thanks to them all!
Brilliant music, with just the right degree of intrigue and suspense,so very well suited to the Miss Marple stories. I agree with mrhomerbojangles comments.
@OrodesIII - The BRITISH arm of Parlophone was taken over by (British) Columbia records shortly before HMV took THEM over, to form EMI in 1931. But the label in the clip ain't British - so...
@OrodesIII Thank you for that comment! Regards! BTW shortly before Ron died he sent me a very kind email! He explained that the standard of his film themes was dependent on the fee he received. Which is why Where Eagles Dare got a full orchestra and Miss Marple did not!.
Love this! This reminds this (American) Baby Boomer of his youth. My first real R&R songs pouring out of the speakers were from The Beatles--and Miss Marple and the rest of the (2nd) British Invasion only added to the joy--and the wonderful memories. Thanks!
The wife and I love this tune. Once heard, you'll never forget. I agree, pure British. Just like my old Triumph Bonneville motorcycle - Pure British, and quite correct. The Miss Marple Series w/Dame Margaret Rutherford was correct; and, I'm an American.
@mrhomerbojangles A person after my own heart. I have a passion for British films of the 40's, 50's and 60's and have amassed a fair collection on video over the last 30 yaers thanks to Channel 4 afternoon films. However even these have dried up due to their endless repeats
@mrhomerbojangles Just vote for the right politicians that will give young people age 7 and above the chance to experiment with instruments and music without any demands on them to become Bethoven at age 12. If you just give them the oppurtunities and then just relax, statistically, out of this huge population of 7 year olds you will produce a bunch of talented singers, writers, musicians and so on. Your situation today is a result of how politicians treat the young generation. Chin up, chin up.
@nuttyboy007 And one more think. If you want a fine example of how brilliant a film can be made without any studio input whatsoever look up a documentary called 'Tarnation' which was made by essentially one man on a budget of $216, and edited on Apple's free iMovie software. It's a modern great in my opinion, a little disturbing though, so wouldn't recommend it for a first date.
@mrhomerbojangles Your comment about how the British music industry has gone down the drain. You're talking to someone studying Film Production and British Film History at university, and frankly, what you've said is absolute twoddle. Don't call me a moron you strumpet.
@nuttyboy007 So your studying ? Where in my comment have I mention music going down the drain. They could not even raise enough money in this country to make a new James Bond movie this year. So if are movie industry is thriving and doing so well hoiw comes India produces more movies than us as do the Americans ? How many of our movie studios are left from what there use to be ? Everything we had that stood for britain being great has gone.... That is my point Moron
@mrhomerbojangles I'm sorry, I meant film. My bad, and your point is terrible, making good films isn't about pumping shedloads of money into mass producing hundreds of generic poor quality films like they do in Bollywood (although there are exceptions, James Ivory's 1963 film 'The Householder [Gharbar]' for instance, was a work of art.) A truly brilliant movie is one that touches you, and this country produces some of the most touching films around. Nobody does social realism in cinema better...
@mrhomerbojangles than the British. Films like This is England, Bronson (stylised but nonetheless brilliant) or Television series' such as Martina Cole's The Take. As for your point about James Bond, I don't understand how that is relevant at all. All film studios work on a rough 'rule of 9' i.e for every 9 story ideas 1 script gets written, for every 9 scripts 1 gets storyboarded etc. etc. And if we can't afford (in a time of economic crisis) to shovel money into a dying franchise then so be it
We have been given permission by the UK Cabinet Office to apply for the composer of this music, Ron Goodwin, to be belatedly knighted for his services to cinema music. If you want to show your support for this please message me! This site will not let me publish the email link! We have already had emails of support from the UK, The Netherlands, New Zealand the USA and we have only been going a week!
Nice thought but posthumous Knighthoods only exist in the form of Facebook petitions etc. There is no actual example of anyone ever receiving one. Just enjoy his music and honour him that way.
@evo5dave Happily there may be a point in time in the near future where Honours will be appointed postumously. Sadly your comment is hardly supportive. We support by attending Ron Goodwin Tribute Concerts, and by approaching bodies that DO award posthumous awards. And by being positive not negative! Facebook petitions? OMG! How old do you think we are! we deal in the real world! They thought flight was a joke too! The world was flat! Let's get Ron Honoured!
I wish you luck in your quest to get some recognition for Ron. However, Knighthoods only honour the living. No matter how much you want it to change, it won't and quite rightly so. Knighthoods must be accepted by the recipient and one of the reasons they are not awarded posthumously is that there is then no danger of 'forcing' a Knighthood onto anyone who would not have wanted it.
I am campaigning to have Dame Margaret Rutherford postumously enrolled into The Sisters Of Perpetual Indulgence.. i wonder if we should cross reference with the Ron Goodwin campaign ?
Splendid music. My wife has noticed recently, that German band Scooter took the Miss Marple Theme to base on it their "Back in UK song". It is sad to say, that I haven't read much Agatha's books so I didn't know about Mrs Marple before (and Miss Marple Theme, of course). So I am a bit wiser now and I am very glad.
I had a really nice email from Ron a year before he died. He explained that he had very little money at his disposal for the series of film - unlike Where Eagles Dare! I also emailed Downing Street asking them to award this great composer even though he has passed away - they did't even reply! He should have been Sir Ron Goodwin!
Ich glaube, für die einzelnen Episoden wurde es immer ein bisschen verändert. Diese Thema hier mit dem anderen Ende gehört auch zu einer bestimmten Folge.
I think there are various versions of it, depending on which of the four films it's from (guess they made a new one with a little different orchestra for all films, like they do with James Bond) - this one I love best of all anyway - the guitar sounds like the real 60's and fits great!
The opening titles of Murder Ahoy! with all manner of sea shanties and nautical motifs woven through it by the peerless Mr.Goodwin would be even better. What a hero he was.
Filmed at Denham - doubling for St.Mary Mead (Milchester in the movie) and on location at St.Mawes, Cornwall.
Let's hope Ron Goodwin will recieve an award from the Queen for his services to music, even though he has passed on! We all remember this and the Battle of Britain theme and the numerous other themes he produced! God Bless!

p.s. I've taken the liberty of "responding" with Ron's BEST piece ever. VERY different from this. Audio Q not so good - and mono. But hope you enjoy!
