Hi -- ya know I thought the very same thing and called them that for the longest time ( I've lived out here 10 years) but wildlife biologist at the Sonoran Desert Museum told me they are "round-tailed ground squirrels" - a species that is closely related to the prairie dog -- they look just like them -- only smaller.
