In my opinion, "Up in the air" is a good movie, but it is not EXCEPTIONAL and quite frankly does not deserve all the attention that it is currently being afforded. If anything, I found it to be quite hackneyed and predictable and as for the "twist", I saw that coming half way through the movie and you'd have to be completely devoid of a brain not to see where the "situation" was heading.

@pablo4115 actually the movie was more than just that. It's about feeling connected to other human beings, feeling isolated when you're on a plane full of people and it's about how we treat each other as human beings--i.e., the cold firing technique. It's not really about romance at all.

A great movie that got nominated for an Oscar doesn't have to be epic or focus on the most important issue in the world, it just have to be a well-made, great movie. Juno is also a personal story focus on one person. Slumdog Millionaire is also focus on one person...

@megamarsvin no actually, they represent the very best in the industry. They sure as hell have their hits and misses--there is no way Hurt Locker should have one best picture. I would have much rather preferred Up In The Air or Avatar. The Academy needs to be concerned with honoring the best, not with making "concessions" just to please viewers who can't handle thought provoking material. That's what the People's Choice and MTV Movie Awards are for.

But it seems to me that everybody is talking about companies should do whatever it can to make more money, employment is secondary (or employ is the effect of them making more money). So why not just fire the firing guys and install firing programs? Today's technology will create life-like human image.
