I taught my children to read before they entered school. I am sad to say that the school tried to undo my phonics-based instruction with "whole language" learning. We learn at home now.

in fact, there's wonderful satire of this very thing in "To Kill A Mockingbird." The little girl age six arrives at school able to read at a high level; and the teacher says she has to forget it all and start over!
