I have a couple of questions for you. Have you tried to use this drive in an external enclosure? And have you tried storing the drive in a freezer for a while? I've heard that cooling the drive can result in the drive running for just enough time for you to recover your data from it.
This is why you should make frequent backups. That hard drive has head damage, and the heads are bouncing against the centre of the disk. You're gonna have to explain yourself to a data recovery center if you want to chance it at recovering any of your data.
Irvin700: I've seen another person on this site who befell exactly the same problem with their hard drive. It even makes the same sound. Maxtor's DiamondMax and Maxline Plus hard drives seem to have a very high rate of bearings failures and a common problem with heads, which have earned them the nickname of Musical Maxtor. Also avoid buying Seagate's Barracuda series.
Funnily enough, I have a 15.3GB Maxtor drive from 2001, and to this day it is still working without any problems.
that sounds like a maxtor.. nice head beat. I wouldnt trust maxtor for nothing..... they are crap. use WD they are more reliable.... thats definitly a telltale maxtor click.. heads failure...yeah maxtor.. JUNK... seagate sucks too.. Since they bought out maxtor they have gone downhill GET WD.. you will be glad you did

That sucks dude. Sorry about the loss of your hard drive....and porn.
I think my hard drive is dying 'cause it makes clicking noises. Used to be intermittent now it is more consistent.
I hope it lasts until my tax refund so I can upgrade.
I got really good life out of it though, it is an 80 gig and is about 5 years old. I forget the brand....I think it is Western Digital.
Have you tried hooking the bad drive up as a secondary mass storage and seeing if you can get stuff off that way??
