  • Perfection. In my opinion Elena's the best classical composer of modern times. I'm in love with every single piece she had ever brought out and in the future, whenever I'll have kids i hope they'll study Elena's work on music classes in school.

  • She looked 16

    :D wonderful

  • @BAdmATT65 looked 16? hahaha, that's Elena Kats-Chernin and she's currently in her 50s, hahahaha. But I agree, she does look quite young in this video

  • This song makes me feel different. It lifts me up in a way.

  • I want this in hard rock version.

  • This is so beautiful. Does anyone know where I can purchase the full version of this music. I have purchased the sheet music short version from a UK site but I am unable to find this longer version. Can anyone help....thanks so much.

  • When I Hear Beautiful Music Like This I Just Stop. And I Listen <3

  • Elena, when you found that theme it must have hit you like a train. It is timeless and will live forever - you are brilliant.

  • Lyods TSB! WOOT!

  • So stuffed to play for my exam. I've only got the intro =(

  • Love is song. Its so beautiful. My music teacher showed us this clip. Around that time i was still deciding what to play for hsc and when this was on i knew STRAIGHT away i wanted to do this piece. hopefully when HSC rolls around later this year i will do this song and Elena Kats Chernin justice

  • @coldTEARx3 All the best for the HSC performance. You love the song enough to want to learn it. You`ve already done Elena Kats Chernin justice.

    Regards

    Tony

  • @coldTEARx3 how did it go!? hope you nailed it!

  • Loyds tsb

  • This is amazing...really...

"Chapeau bas", as we say in french, because it's a truly wonderful piece. Thanks a lot for sharing such a talent :)

  • Utterly beautiful, and slightly mysterous at times. It kept my attention all the way through, and surely captivating the audience throughout the piece is whatany composer aspires to do?

  • hey girls slow down.

  • elenab kats chernin is an awesome composer!

  • W.O.W i love this song and you play it beautifully

  • This is Absolutely Beautiful.

  • I just can't stop listening to this. Everytime I click on it, I just can't wait till the she starts playing the piano with lovely sounds.

  • nothing special

  • I so now regret giving up on piano lessons 35years ago, I would love to be able to play this, I can't stop listening over and over, truly it is beautiful, :o)

  • please please make a video of your cello duo, phoenix story, it's really amazing!!!

  • beautiful!!

  • Absolutely beautiful!!

  • would sound better if it was slower but still great

  • I love it , of course it's the original, however I wish the tempo was slower and more melodic.

  • @mouldytone

Is the arrangement available on boosey.com a similar arrangement as to what Elena Kats-Chernin played in this video? I know she writes heaps of different versions etc of her pieces. This is an AMAZING piece :D I love her work!!!!!

  • Beautiful. I would like to see an arrangement for this on organ. I think that would be immense!

  • where can u get sheet music 4 this???

  • @rohinismyname2107 Hello. I can only find the Sheet Music available through the British Publishers but I believe that they post worldwide and the cost seems quite reasonable. I have included a link in the info section on this page just below the video panel.

    Tony

  • Wonderful, inspiring. Brings to mind, so many emotions. Thank you so much.

  • Such a wonderful piece of music. I love all Elena's music, a very talented lady.

    Best wishes,

    Meryl Heasman.

  • Truely inspirational.

  • amazing sound

  • wow incredible...wish i had of kept up the piano lessons!! lol

  • OMG this is gorgeous

  • anyone have the sheet music for this please??

  • oh my God this is beautiful!

  • youtube has hundreds of tutorials on how to read sheet music... i learned this way, easily. being dyslexic doesn't mean you can watch a video dumbass

  • im not dyslexic and i cant read sheet music. Its not because im lazy either becaue ive tried really hard but i always have to count the bars and that takes ages. It just doesnt click with me im more of a visual and audio person,i can pick up songs by just listneing to them and figuring it out myself than reading notes!

  • i'm dyslexic too - but this is no excuse for being able to find sheet music tutorials on youtube or wherever on the internet. it's really easy to read guys... don't be lazy

  • dick wad

  • I love the piece of music, but i can't find a tutorial anywhere on youtube, plus i can't read sheet music. I would really apreciate a tutorial from anyone who knows this song on the piano, thanks :)

Oh and the tutorial only needs to be from the start of the song till 0:37 if anyone bothers to make it Lol, thanks :D

  • you play piano and can't read sheet music! it's so easy!

  • you probably wont find one because the music costs so no ones gona put it on u tube for free

    sorry

  • anybody know where I can get hold of this version of it?

I love this piano version more than the one used on the advert lol :)

  • fantastic, glad there are still some real musicians out there!!

  • a yawn sunrise dew mist rises

    birds take flight

    butterflys arise

    chook & bantom prowl early

  • Eh?

  • anyone know other good composers like her?

  • Nobuo Uematsu

  • Yoko Shimomura.

  • hi guys, thanks for all the comments, it is really nice to read and I appreciate it a lot! Just to clarify, I do not usually need the score, but I tend to improvise and go on a tangent if I don't stick to the structure. In this TV show the sound engineers needed me to keep to the score for timing reasons. And did I really hit the wrong note, AR123457??? And if so, what should it have been? Any suggestions?? Ha ha, only kidding. Bye for now, EKC

  • Elena thanks so much for taking the time to comment and for the clarification of your use of the score for this particular performance.

  • @elenakatschernin1 Haha, I've listened at 31 seconds a few times, I can't hear the wrong note...very nice :-)

  • @elenakatschernin1 But where can we get the full piano score? The publishers only seem to have a simple and short version - bit disappointing

  • @dreamonnbutler I believe the longer version is available from the Australian Music Centre

  • @elenakatschernin1 do you sing in another version ?

  • pianosydney many people have asked why Elena uses sheet music for this performance of her own composition but no one has explained it as well as you. Thanks for taking the time to comment.

  • Do you have a recording of Butterflying? I am trying to look for a solo piano version also. What do you think of this work? Thanks for posting this video! Beautiful!

  • hi GypsyPianist, thanks for the interest in this piece. There is a recording of me playing a slowed down, pared back version of Butterflying, it is on CD of TALL POPPIES called "Slow Food". There are different versions, violin and piano, as well as Children's Choir and piano, so not sure which one you've heard.

  • What an honour to have a reply from the great lady herself! Thank you very much! I was delighted to hear this recording (above) which is played so much from the heart and marvelous sensitivity! I want to buy the sheet music of all of these latest compositions but for piano solo. I have students who would do your work justice and I would like them to play. Also, if I were to give a recital, I think I may include a few of these works myself! The one I heard of Butterflying was Violin & Piano.

  • LLOYDS TSB

  • she hit a wrong note at 0: 31

  • dont think she did..

  • this is really nice, but im just confused why she needs sheet music for own composition :S

  • i think it still must be hard to remember every detail even when you do write a piece. Poets usualy read when performing their work and michael stipe does it to, but thats less forgivable!

  • Bravo,Loamo!!! Tutta Bella!!!:):):) "Chin Chin" Chente Anni Salute Ciao:):):)

  • beautiful piece, it was a GREAT intro to John Gallianio's spring show.

  • Yeah that was a fabulous collection from John and I love this song sung by Emily Turner.I can't find it here on YT except amateur Live versions.Pity.

  • so beautiful. PLEASE, does anyone have the sheet music for this, to give to me? it would me the world to me... PLEASE.

  • plz is there anywhere i can posibly get this song in mp3 format

  • This is unbelievably moving. Such an amazing talent. Thank you for sharing it with us.

  • What a wonderful piece, i heard this on the radio played on the

saxophone and i instantly thought about the Lloyd's TSB advert! but i don't think

that it should just be recognised for that advert; it is a wonderful piece

played by a wonderful pianist and i could listen to this piece over

and over again! Thanks Elena for this great piece that makes my heart

    sing =]

  • I think that may have been the Tyler Rix version from his album, Ascent. It certainly sticks in the mind!

  • Wow :|

I don't like this type of musi, but deep down inside, I think everyone has a love for it

    <3

  • Absolutely sterling on solo piano. Both melancholic and optimistic at the same time - wouldn't sound out of place in a Tim Burton film...

  • this is uber fantastic! so amazing and beautiful.

  • This is so beautiful.

  • She's also a Pianist, what do you expect!

  • She reminds me of Regina Spektor. Looks/style/plays a piano...

  • Comment removed

  • Beautiful music, it makes my heart dance.

  • sooooo beautiful. it makes my ears happy!

  • I think this sounded great but in general I'm with Warholio

  • Guys please dont jump on me but I do understand what warholio is trying to say. It is an extraordinary piece taking the listener to incredible places - surprising all the time. But I can guarantee you that in time to come you will hear this played more casually and a bit better than this version by a pianist who can INTERPRET this piece slightly differently ?

  • There have been any number of composers who wrote piano music they couldn't play very well themselves, and recognized the fact - Ravel for one. As I don't know this piece well and don't play piano I'm not about to guess whether that's the case here, but it's not impossible.

  • Its not daft at all its my opinion and i'm entitled to it thank you. I don't think i'm mozart, i don't even play. All i know is what i like listening to. I love this piece an in general agree with all the comments of praise. I just found the playing slightly clumsy. You can be an excellent composer without being an excellent player, Do you think that a composer who composes for an orchestra can play every instrument superbly? Why is there always one who has to lower the grade of discussion?

  • You might be entitled to it, but that doesn't make it factual, considered or able to be taken seriously. If she is the composer, this is how she has intended the piece to be heard- it's called authorship. Whether you think it's clumsy or not doesn't enter into it. If you think it does, great- get the composer's permission to perform/record a "better" version.

  • I disagree with the concept of the music being "abused". I truly enjoyed this version and in fact like it a lot better than the tantalising bit used for the commercial, but as I would never have found it without that medial usage in the first place, I am grateful it enabled me to discover this beautiful composition. I am convinced the commercial doesn't necessarily take anything away from the music but instead may have won a far greater audience for it and the composer, actually.

  • its a lovely piece - i'd like to hear it played by somebody who was a bit better at piano than her though

  • What a daft thing to say! She is the COMPOSER, I would imagine however she plays it is how she intended it to be heard. That's like saying Van Gough's Sunflowers were ok but you would have prefered it if a painter and decorator had done them! Get a life. When you can play and compose like her you will have achieved something more then sniping from the sidelines. Oh and don't tell me, ... you're Mozart lol

  • where can I get this sheet music?! I must have it! I loved the original Aria. Thanks for posting this:)

  • i love it

  • OMG! Its sounds sooo good on the piano! I wish i was that talented at the piano :(

  • I must admit, I agree totally with TessDarkstone, however, if she wanted it to be used on the advert, so be it. I just wish that people would be grateful for the original piece and that they would stop chopping and changing things around.

    :~)

  • This woman must hate the way her music has been abused :)

  • how has it been abused? (sorry for the ignorance)

  • They used it on a Lloyd's TSB bank advert...

  • oh.

  • reminds me of mad mae out of eastenders, this song is truly beautiful

  • no more words, just amazing as it is....!

  • I will hopefully buy the sheet music of this soon. I will take it to my piano teacher and hopefully, she will be able to teach it to me...

I love this composition, possibly slightly more than the Lloyds TSB advert because it is the original and you get to hear the rest of the tune. I think this sounds absolutely beautiful - can't stop listening to it.

Well done Elena Kats-Chernin, fantastic, brilliant job!

    :~)

  • Anyone know where i could find a midi file for this song. twud be much amazing.

  • i really want to learn this, it's beautiful.

  • i love this....there is so many remixes and the advert version of it...its nice to hear the original for once. i love this whole piece..its good.

  • Really nice, I like this a lot. In reply to some other posts questioning the simplicity of the composition, I am not particulary bothered how complex the piece of music is, it is the sound that is produced that counts. The melody is the element that makes this aria work, and is perhaps the most simple part. I feel too many people are preocupied with complexity, and forget about the actual music.

    Great stuff!

  • Nice to follow all these discussions about my piece and my playing, thank you for the comments, the piece has many sections of which the one used in Lloyds TSB commercials is more known. I agree with some of you that the chords are very simple and sometimes are arpeggiated but not always. To answer your question below, christheteacher, the initial idea for the piece started with the rhythmic melodic cell and the harmony progressed from that starting point.

  • Michael Nynam's theme tune to 'The piano'

  • Ahhh this is such a pieceful tune. It is wonderful. I can't get enough of the music i love it so much! keep the love XD

  • Just got back to the Open Minds-13 concert, where she was performing this lovely piece - So delicate - a real delight.

  • It does make me laugh because our wonderful race forgets how gorgeous a simple piano melody is. When will we all wake up again and realise that love and music are really the only things we can ever rely on. None the less, a lovely little piece well played. Thankyou. x

  • Agreed lolz

  • very good point footiehead. jonnyhunter is a bit thick, dont you think?

  • yes, even if you are saying that about yourself ...

  • This is awesome. Was looking for this track after hearing the lloyds advert. That was before the slightly vaccous dance version released recently.Dont you just hate it when you like a really unusual tune and then it becomes popular???

Anyway Mouldytone thanks for posting definitely going in my favourites.

p.s. someone should remix this thing properly.

  • you said you only looked up the song after it was on the advert(when it became popular) and then you say that you hate it when you like a song and it becomes popular.. you are one of the people making it popular :P

  • I was just thinking about re-writing it for the piano. Do you think it's worth it? I just thought that I can capture the essence of the melody a bit more consistantly than is demonstrated here?

  • this is... fabulous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! i am a piano player myself but this is simply amazing!

  • A long piece? haha. God help her if she ever has to perform a concerto!

  • yeh right there, it's not a particularly long piece, and she shud be able to rememebr it. dunno why she can't, but it hardly matters either way.

  • Well said! lol

  • @phootie:

I think Elena Kats-Chernin is more of a composer, than a pianist.

  • This is just... amazing...

  • simple genius. absolutely gorgeous. hats off.

  • This is so pretty.
