  • Most cannibals just eat people. This cannibal also eats mountains... Edd-Y Edd-y Edd-y!!!!!

  • old time good time

  • @lleosupercluster I know what you mean and i definetely agree its just that Armstrong tends manipulates everyone onto his side and threatens others who speak out against him. However most people on here probably admire Eddy Merckx because he raced to win all the time, whereas Armstrong only focused on the tour. Its not the doping people look at, its the desire to win ( however its obvious they both doped its just that Merckx had the desire to win everything which made him a greater champion)

  • On their respective generation, both Merckx and Lance were the greatest.-I am a fan of both. There should be in fact no difference between them: if you run the race now or 30 years ago. The difference could be the bikes ....or is it the dope that changed during the years.

Another fact is, that only great bikers can use dope... look at Contador....is it because he didn't use dope that he didnt win the Tour ?

The way they all climb the Alps, in the Tour or in the Giro...is not always "normal"

  • @mpl1700 Merckx rode (and won) about every race there was. Lance - apart from his early early years when he competed in other races as well - practically lived solely for the Tour de France.

IMO, that's just a sign that riders now have become more specialised. Classics specialists with a more sturdy build so to speak won't win a GT, nor will a butterfly like Contador be able to lift off and win on the cobbles of say P-R.

  • @lleosupercluster ... anyway, Armstrong, Schleck or Contador have in team, because a team is there to help !

Anyway, why didn't Eddy go faster than the actual riders if he took doping ?

  • Attacking at every moment possible, even after being punched in the ribs and fracturing his cheek bone. What a legend, a truly inspirational athlete fighting to the bitter end!

  • at 7.17

just to show how deep that was

  • just power+doping? no controls at the time.

    but still a great master!

  • so tight road

  • Frames of steel. Balls of steel. The good old days.

  • @1RadNomad And legs of steel.....

  • No one else in that pack deserved to be on that road with him. He proved it.

  • " But he really needed no dope to cannibalize most of races he joined to " ......obviously , correction in there .

  • The canibal was an amazing athlete. Not only did he want (and succeed) to win the Tour de France 5 times, the Giro 5 times, the Vuelta once, the world championship 3 times etc (look it up). But he also wanted to win every single stage. Now the cyclists are counting and waiting and only attacking if their position is endangered. Merckx attacked even wearing the yellow jersey with 5 minutes before his first opponent.

  • Did the commentator just say "Shakespearean?" 6:36

  • Merckx was in yellow on this stage, but lost the stage and the yellow jesey to Bernard Thévenet later in the day.

This was the day after 'the punch'

  • Yup Merckx not only wanted to win he also wanted to win in great style, it was HOW he won that mattered greatly to him.

  • yah no carbon frame

  • what this italian guys are talking about Fausto? This video talks about Eddie! Yes, Fausto was (IS) great, but let´s talk about Fausto on his videos...

  • @anderson4041 " That Italian guy " was talking of cycling past legends & champs replying to someone who had been posting a comment about Merckx's doping. He rightly made a correction about Thevenet who admitted the use of steroyds , Merckx may have won a few races more with the help of doping, but he really needed that to cannibalize most of races he joined to .....

So " the Italian guys " were debating over doping rumors throughout years and Merckx' s fans also post their comments

  • on Coppi's video talking incidentally of Eddy and cycling of that age , something similar happens in so many videos here on YouTube, so what's the matter ........????

  • what this italian guys are talking about Fausto? This video talks about Eddie! Yes, Fausto was (IS) great, but let´s talk about Fausto on his videos...

  • Esto es ciclismo!!!

  • To beat Merckx other riders had to take dope, dont forget Merckx had a wired up broken jaw in this race ( 1975 tour) and was punched in the stomach by a spectator who possibly knew he could still beat Thevenet.

  • Eddy Merckx, such a myth ,,,,,but always behind the greatest cyclist of all times, the greatest outclass champion , Fausto Coppi, who created modern cyclism and whose epic feats any cyclist else ( Merckx comprehensive ) can only admire at , since they rest unequalled till today and probably unbeatable forever .

The One Legend of Cyclism history is Fausto Coppi , Merckx and a few others are just behind as myths , not as legends ......!

  • People age, cycling ages, but this video never gets old!! The cannibal proves he is the man!!!!

  • boom

  • ESTO SÍ ERA CICLISMO !!!! Y NO EL ABURRIMIENTO DE AHORA....LAS TÁCTICAS, PINGANILLOS, ETC. ESTÁN ACABANDO CON EL ESPECTÁCULO.

  • Wonderfull Eddy !!!!!

  • I agree that Eddie is the greatest cyclist ever. He rode a full season including the classics. the three tours, almost every year, plus the winter six day races and broke the hour record in 1972. All this with a bad back from a derny crash.

  • 60's, 70's, and 80's are the golden era of cycling. I hope the UCI will put an end to the proliferation of carbon made frames...etc and go back to use simple and gracefull bicycles that marked this 3 decades era with a minimum weight of course. A cyclist like Merckx, Poulidor, Hinault, Thevenet, or even De Vlaemink or Herman Van Springel, know how to suffer on their bikes. And they were complete (4x4-all terrain) runners. Rare today to find one like these and I'm disillusionned.

  • In the early 70s they started blood doping too, storing their own blood in an effort to boost red blood cell count for greater oxygen carrying capacity.

  • Merckx:

    a) Surname.

    b) adj. Of exceptional quality. Greater than awesome.

  • Who's in the KOM jersey?

  • @thebostonbruiners Lucien Van Impe -- he was #71 that year, and went on to win the KOM competition.

Incidentally, French Wikipedia holds the answer to many of these questions. I has a complete start list for almost every Tour going back to the 50s.

  • They're like iguanas with all that head bobbing, they look so silly

  • its amazing these bikes were made out of a steel frame! in a way makes modern day cyclists look like pussies

  • @mrstash9 not when you compare modern average speeds

  • @MeatCloud true, but these guys didn't have all of the special energy bars or anything like that back then! Or even the special training! I don't know, in my opinion these old school riders i think were better cyclists then today modern riders with full carbon fiber frames and other such advance materials on there bikes

  • interesting observation...

  • The king

  • the cannibal!!!

  • The best , Nickolai national cycling coach of Israel .

  • heroisch!!!!

  • @davepaff

maybe with doping he would be yes, he is just mediocre without

  • @davepaff absolute idiocy.

  • never seen the like

  • no carbon frames no ceramic bearings no aero bars just POWER

  • @techno2b

but cocaine, speed, painkiller and much much more!

  • Comment removed

  • @sushi77 like thats not the case nowadays lol...

  • @bbck15

nowadays the get caught with cocaine, speed, painkiller but i know what you mean today the drugs just a bit more progressive :)

  • But many riders at that time were on speed and in addition drank alcohol. Don't forget Tom Simpson.

  • lol they are holding lots of food in the back of their shirts xD

  • I like the view from the helmet cam, but it clearly shows that he was held up by motorbikes

  • Only Eddy Merckx could participate and win each year Tour,Giro, and most of the great classics!

  • Please don't mix up Merchx , Gimondi & Hinault with Epons armstrong or other similar shittyfaced doped cheaters & ridiculous cunts !!!

Merchx is the best in modern cycling era ,but he's surpassed by the best of all times

the greatest legend ever of cycling and among All Times 3 greatest champs in overall sports , il Campionissimo Fausto Coppi . Coppi was greater ,classier ,more completed .more glorious. more relevant for this sport and far much more ill-fated than Eddy .

  • @Busseto of course it's Merckx an not MercHx , I apologize for my embarrasing type mistake .

Ps : today cyclists are farcical comedians & pathetic doped cheaters compared to

to 40s - 80s era ; cyclism definitely stopped to be that real hard sport it used to be at

early 90s to get into a ridiculous comedy played by fucked doped cheaters like epons armstrong, landis , delgado, ullrich, valverde, contador ,olano and their worthy doped mates !

  • @Busseto Thevent beat merckx twice in the tour and later confirmed he had been doped to the gills.

  • @sashabear72 Ehm ......to tell the truth Thevenet was the doped clown ( he admitted he took steroyds & cortisone ) that's why he won 2 Tours . He NEVER spelled even one utter word about doping use by Merckx,

try to spell less childish lies & find stronger arguments to defend or justify in such a pathetic way your american doped cheaters & lousy robbers !! The US cheating cyclists have been the worst thing could happen to world Cyclism , along with the fuckin' corrupt US federation

  • they did nothing but ruining that was the finest and most beautiful sport of all and your naive, stupid and clueless comment , along with all others by the tipically ignorant shamefull american users , says clearly how much they know of cycling in USA ( less than zero ) and what kinda shameless cheaters and dirty liars are the americans when they do sports !!

The very few doping of the 70s was just a candy compared to all the infinite, disgusting, infernal doping cheats of 90s & 200s

  • of 1990s and 2000s in Cycling , most of which sharply from USA and Spain the 2 biggest master cheaters in cycling doping and more ......!!!

Stick to the biggest doped cheater and sittyfaced robber of all times EPOns armstrong, to Steroyd Landis and all the US stinky druged cheaters , cry on their pumped backs !!

  • @Busseto You have a real stick up your ass. How saying thevenet revealing that he was doped to beat Merckx has anything to do with american racers is beyond me.

  • How wonderful, to see a race from this time period, covered almost like I would get to see it today! A wonderful effort by Merckx, and a real window into history.

  • Merckx lost that tour (1975) in an unfair way: a French supporter hit / punched him and was later sentenced for it.

  • el mejorrr!! un saludo desde españa

  • Thankyou bikers for your love of the sport. This footage is priceless. I want to ride this just as it is in this video.

  • Merckx = Armstrong + Hinault + Gimondi + Boonen + cancellara. He won 570 races !

  • i just love retro 70's jerseys...especially those made from wool

  • He may have been the best but fuck me he looked horrible on a bike!!

  • Eddy Merckx one of the sports legends

  • merckx was ok but no more then that!

  • thank you!

  • The camera work is so frantic I like it, it almost makes you feel you are part of whats going on the desperate chase after him its brilliant ! Not that I'd want to watch a whole race like that but it would be nice to have bits like that even today.

  • I love how the camera cant keep up with how fast he is tremendous athlete

  • el canibal

  • Eddy Merckx: The greatest cyclist of all time.

Perhaps the greatest athlete of all time...

  • @voxl2ba yea until he got busted for stimulants three times and kicked out of the Giro.

  • I really love how even Merckx is suffering up this hill, bobbing and churning, which shows how hard it is to climb. Yet, he goes on, and goes fast! Awesome!

  • That my friends is why he won so many races!! He was the greatest cyclist of my time! he is the person responsible for my great interest in cycling. Thanks Eddy, you're the GREATEST!!!

  • Holy Shit. The Cannibal, for sure.

  • Either Eddie Merckxx is faster than lightning or that is the most horrible camerawork I have ever seen. As one viewer mentioned one moment he is there and the next he is gone. It's not only the other riders trying to find out what happened, the cameraman is also trying to find out what happened...

  • Everyone talks about drugs in cycling. I talked with my professor today in strategic management about cycling. Drugs is one part of 1,000,000 million variables. Yet theres always someone who has to bring up drugs. But with Eddy Merckx noone brings up drugs ( sure he doped in some respect to drugs in his career) But i doubt anyone thinks he was always on "drugs" The truth is; if merckx was on drugs most of the time, he would never have won all those races; thats called "willpower"

  • @partylwc I think the biggest difference between what goes on today vs. when Eddy was riding is that blood doping, steroids and strength/weight manipulation are far more effective combinations than any of the stimulants or methods they may have been incorporating then. I think that's why when you watch these (Eddy) races they just seem real in the way that they suffer as supposed to the more robotic efforts riders of today produce.

  • @NullUnit2 You know, steroids did exsist during this time frame, I'm not accusing any of the riders of using them but i wonder if it was in the sport back then.

  • Whoa!

How I wish I could also do such...

    lol.. dream on pal!

  • alle le canibal

  • holly crap what a machine..

  • I wish I was half as good as Eddy was

  • PURE STEEL! WITHOUT RADIO.

  • holy SHIT. Now I get why he was called the cannibal. One second he's right there and then there's just a huge trail of broken guys trying to figure out what just happened. a BEAST!

  • Eddy best in history.Hinault the second.Anquetil, Indurain,Armstrong... Armstrong with drugs, 7 Tours, Indurain 5 t + 2 Giros, Eddy 5 T 5 G 1V (bufffff) Hinault 5 + 3 + 2 ....

If Jan Ullrich wastn't a stupid he would have beaten Armstrong for sure

  • thats like saying, well if armstrong wasnt so good Ullrich would have beaten him for sure. Ullrich couldnt beat him on drugs or without them, LA was superior to Ullrich, as was shown on video coverage and in the history books. Ullrich was a stud but he is by no means worthy of being in with the names you posted.

  • Wow, Merckx's attack rips the field to peices! Le Cannibale indeed.

  • In my opinion, had LA been any nationality other than American, he wouldn't have won 7 tours. In the USA the only focus is the tour so he wasn't required by the sponsors to ride anything else. Italian, French, Spanish cyclists have obligations to ride the other major races as well.

  • Are you implying he is better than Eddy Merckx?

It's pretty convenient for him to only be obliged to ride well at only the Tour.

  • No, exactly the opposite. I'm saying that only because he is American he has the luxury of not racing the spring classics or other Grand Tours where as Merckx raced and won all of these. Merckx won more in his best two years than most cyclists win in their career.

  • Don't stop! Where's part two???

  • lance is the best even he doesn t win Spain,Italy etc...

  • about Lance being the best. You probably just started watching cycling this month because of all the b.s. or really have no idea what your talking about. Facts are facts. Lance is not the best, he was a prima donna, to scared to race anything besides the tour. Alberto Contador is already better than him, he has won the last 4 grand tours, lance could only place 4th and 12th in the other tours.

  • Lance participates all the time only in Tour de France,he doesn t lose the time with other tours, with few exceptions..Lance was 3th palce now at 37 years, after 3 years of repause..contador is not constant, armstrong, if is in a grat form, can beat contador.you will see in 2010 that!

  • exactly!! he hasn't accomplished much. "The French magazine Vélo called him "the most accomplished rider that cycling has ever known."[2] The American publication, VeloNews, called him the greatest and most successful cyclist of all time.[3] He won the Tour de France five times, won all the classics except Paris-Tours[2], won the Giro d'Italia five times and the Vuelta a España, won the world championship as an amateur"

  • and I'm talking about Eddy not lance

  • Alberto Contador is already better than him????you are so stupid,he is 10 years youngest than lance.if you compare lance at 27 and contador at 27 you will see a very big diference! find some video with lance attacks,he is from anather planet!

  • a cyclist is not only measured in the tour. You people that don't have a clue need to get this out of your head. A proh is measured in all aspects of racing. Every single race Alberto enters he goes in to win, not sit around like Lance's crappy out of shape year were he doesn't win anything.

  • lance also win a lot of stages in the tour de frace..many years he win 3-4 stages...contador is an the beginning of carrer..bun is not like armstong..in one or two years will be down

  • I'm not sure of this... I think that Contador will win many GT in the future... Tour De France, Giro D'Italia, Vuelta de Espana... Armstrong never win the Giro or the Vuelta.

If you win the 4 or 5 tour and also the Giro and the Vuelta is better than win "only" 7 tour.

Giro and Vuelta are very different than the Tour, in the Giro there are many difficoult climb...

  • yeah and many times eddy merckx won 8 or 9 stages. the most pointed illustration I remember was sometime in 2004 or 2005 when the commentator said that lance would have to wear the jersey every day for the rest of that tour and the next 2 tours to equal the total number of days in yellow that merckx had. keep in mind, that the organizers asked merckx not to ride one year, and he won roughly half the races he started. only cyclist close was Coppi.

  • not the total number of days in yellow are important, but the number of the tours !

  • Lance is a good cyclist, but not the best.

I think to Eddy Merckx, Hinault, Coppi, Bartali, Anquetil....

Lear more about the cycling history. There are many race important, non just the tour...

  • at this point i agree with you,but my opinion about lance is ...if he went to win giro, vuelta etc he doesn t have the satisfaction for 7 tours de frace..his palmares could be 2 giro,2 vuelta and 4 tours de france..but nowbody won 7..that s the point..it is an extraodinary thing...sorry for my english,i am romanian not gipsy(it is a big diference!)

  • Merckx will always be the king of cyclists, the rest just imitators....

  • Why did the french frogs hate merckx so much? supposedly he was drenched in spit from the frothing frogs and one went so far as to punch merckx in the kidney.

  • Because Eddy is and will always be The King...

  • Lance is King of the Tour, and til proven guilty innocent.

Eddy Merckx is King of All Time. Eddy was a rider with a full schedule, there's the real difference.

Vive Le Cannibale, Vive La Belgique!

  • I couldn't agree more

  • exactly--Lance was Tour only, Merckx won ALL the Majors and Classics

  • If Armswrong was clean and spouting his twatter crepe he would be taken in for

Bykiatric observation, his observed belief in his own cleanliness is based on the premise that if you sound like you might be, then you must be/

  • Ooops....., forgot to mention Gimondi. Simply superb cyclist.

  • Today IS easier, period.

Today's equipment is NOT faster, nor better on balance, above all the frames.

More and more everyday it is sad to note that new cyclists have no clue about Merckx. For that matter individuals such as Anquetil, Hinault, Maertens, Gaul, Coppi, Bottecchia, Madiot, Argentin, Van Looy, Van Impe, Motta, Schoenmaker, Kelly, Raas, De Vlaeminck, Moser, Bartali.., to name but a few....., for that matter LeMond.

  • Today is more easy!!! Merckx is the best ever and better than armstrong for sure

  • @andresco50 armstrong does not deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence as Eddy Merckx!

  • @andresco50, saying today is easier, you just show you have never been a ciclyst. There is no difference between then and now, it's all the time about one man against the rest. Nowadays, machines and roads are better, but the only change is that cyclists go faster. All of then. And so, still wins only the best.

  • @citocinax I am cyclist and I know what is a ride in that 70's bikes and with those gears!!! my point is that today the technology helps a lot to the ciclyst today about a more efficient training, special food, great communication with the team, gps, and a lot of things that help to the ciclyst. But they are in competition against the rest is the same, and the training is hard too. Eddy didn't have all that things and won tours giros vueltas etc.... today one is good for one race !!

  • Merckx with his iron will, would dominate today, especially with equipment that is 10x lighter and faster.

I cant even imagine what will be out equipment-wise 35 or 40 years from now.

  • Tubulars are still superior newbie. God, all these newbie idiots.

armstrong...................? Wouldn't put that Potemkin Village any higher than 15th all time, period. The guy was such a Potemkin Village.

  • How often does ESPN classic show Eddy Merckx races? That is awesome!!

  • Oh, man, I would hate to try that with tubulars!

  • I absolutely agree! My list 1 Eddy Merckx

2 Bernard Hinault 3 Lance Armstrong

  • I think that indurain was better than armstrong, because indurain won more racings and more varied than armstrong, so he is better!armstrong only tour. he wasn´t complete like others.

    My list:

    1.Merckx. 2.Hinault. 3.Indurain

  • Yes you're right i agree with you

  • plus Indurain had a cool classy demeanor about him. I only disliked Indurain because he signaled the end of the Lemond era. That and Indurain was so machine like, like the terminator, only that grin on his face as he climbed mountains and dominated time trials.

  • jaja!like terminator...xD!and only that grin...what a laugh!jaja!good!

  • Bike racers can typically outrun any Motorcyclist or driver on technical descents. They would fall off the edge of the road trying to keep up with big name riders with the agility they have on a legit road bike, unless the rider is Jan Ullrich, he cant descend too well .

  • Wow.

Crazy roads...To bad one could´nt make out the climbs on the stage.

  • That motorcycle can hardly keep up with that maniac! Especially downhill!

  • Eddy Merckx ran for the all season, from Milano-Sanremo to the Giro di Lombardia winning all the race, not only the tour de France. He is absolutely the best.

  • i totally agree with that!

  • Can't agree more!

  • Don't forget he was on track on winter doing madison and hour record.

    The Best, no doubt.

  • By far the greatest ever

    525 professional victories

Most victories ever in 1 season: 54

Stage victories in the Tour de France: 34

Most victories in 1 tour de france in 1970 and 1974: 8 victories

Most days in the yellow jersey:96

1969 won the yellow jersey, the green jersey and best climber all in 1 tour de france

    and so on

there can be no discussion that Merckx is and probably will stay the greatest sportman ever

  • not to mention the only rider to ride a stage of the tour on his own!

  • come on eddy, allez eddy, vamos eddy

  • allez EDDY!!

  • That tour in '75 would have been eddys 6th win. However early in the stages he was coming up to the start finish line to get ready for the start and the worlds best cyclist simply fell over cuz he did not get his foot out of the toeclip. He suffered a fractured jaw and was on a slurry fed through a straw the rest of the tour. Then some stages later in the mountains a drunk frenchman got up from his place on the slow climbing side of the route and hauled off and punched eddy hard in the ribs.

  • After being punched he managed to make it to the end of the stage. Even though he was only feeding through a straw and then had very painful breathing he STILL came in second. Eddy Merckx was a combination of an amazing cycling physique, loads of grit and determination. Sometimes when he would appear to have made a tactical error during a race he could make up for it with locomotive power and blast by the front runners and go on to win alone.

  • The end of an Era? is this 1975?

  • Yup, this stage was the last time Merckx wore yellow in the Tour. The previous day he'd been punched in the gut while climbing the Puy du Dome; then on this stage to Pra-Loup he attacks going over the penultimate climb, leads down the descent, but fatigue catches up with him on the final ascent and he cracks. (See the next clip: "Eddy Merckx en Pra-Loup.")

Atletas do séc.

    Suerte.

  • One of the greatest Tour stages ever . . . the end of an era.
