I keep getting stuck at the root part; I have the clockwork in and everything but wen its time to root the ACS mode never comes, it just shows the triangle with the ! help plz!
I had an issue with rooting. Kept getting stuck at zImage or some other error with the download screen stuck. What worked for me was using the USB cable from my Palm Pre and it finally worked without a hitch!
I used Odin to return to stock Froyo, then OTA update to EI22 and then EL30, & then did this. The phone worked for a few minutes and then I got the picture of a phone, an exclamation point & a computer. The phone would not turn on or do anything, and I am dependent on my phone for important communication, therefore had to return the phone to Sprint. They could not get it working either, and had to get me a replacement phone. I am now unsure whether to try this with the new one? Any advice?
i think what many people are having problems with is when they dl the .tar file, they get it in an unzipped file and put it in the pda slot but it says something like tar.tar instead of .tar.md5 so what are we doing wrong or is that perfectly ok? also many people are confused about this step (as i have read) and go ahead and open the zipped file to only see zimage. a lot of confusion. if you could help out i and many others would greatly appreciate it. thank you!
Once I get into the download mode step, I don't get the com:# part. Got the drivers, unzipped it just in case, did everything correct up to here, but nothing. Trying to take out SD card, but will that really work? If it doesn't, suggestions?

Ok, I have Odin v 4.05. When I try to put the .tar.md5 file in PDA it says "Invalid Image Type" so I can't seem to do anything. What do I do? I'm running straight-up stock everything (EL30, 2.6.6) on the phone, but can't get Odin to work. Nearly all internet info is woefully outdated, impossible to sift through, and can't do anything for me. Anything new assumes I'm already rooted. This is the closest thing could find that I can ALMOST use. Thanks in advance.
@Dropmurphy Odin is either 1.61 or 1.83. Not sure where you got that from. You can try removing the .md5 from the end of the file. Or grab Odin from the links after the video.
@Kennyglass123 Yeah, I accidentally grabbed ODIN Multi Downloader v4.05. Interface looks almost identical so I didn't notice at first especially because I didn't need ODIN to do anything with my old phone so I have very little experience with it. When I realized this, I went ahead and downloaded v1.85 from the link under the video and that worked. Thanks for the response though
Im currently running ei 22. I have installed the drivers. When using kernel-GB-3a.tar.md5 file in odin it seems to brick my phone. I then go through unbrick video and flash eco5 back on also using odin. Any suggestions to be able to load the tar in order to root ?
i have noticed when i download it changes the file name to kernel-GB-3a.tar.tar

Odin crashes soon as I hit start. 4 different cables, 2 different machines (XP & Vista 64) everything OK, just rooted a GS2 yesterday no problem, but this GS1 is giving me heartburn. I redownloaded everything multiple times from multiple sources... No Go.
@gzetski It is possible that the USB port on the phone is bad. Heimdall is more robust. You can try that. Use 7zip to take the tar file apart into it's components and put in the proper slots in Heimdall. Post 2 of "How to recover a semi-bricked Epic" on XDA explains more about Heimdall use.
Im sorry for being a little off topic here. I rooted about a month ago eveything was great till today. On the homescreen my contacts, messaging, phone and application buttons on the bottom of the screen just dissappeared.. It has been replaced by one button that says applications..when i press the app button it shows all apps and then the button changes to a home button. i need help...i cant find the on screen keyboatd to dial etc
@pogytime Change your launcher. I recommend Zeam. I am not sure what launcher you are using but it sounds like ADW that has a bug where the second dock pops up whether that button is clicked are not.
@thesuperdogpr You need to replace your cable with a heavy duty one like a Blackberry cable. Also Odin with the battery out. As soon as you hook in the USb cord quickly put it in download mode.
alright so i downloaded the kernel thing, and i got everything else with odin going, got the yellow box and pda but when i push start it runs then it tells me the kernal is invalid. Help with this would be awesome
@kennyglass123 I found the odin video, but theres an updated version of it However they are both for epic touch 4g not original epic which is what I have any idea if these will work for the original epic as well
@JaDawn04 Odin works the same way in both. Just make sure you use the correct files for our Epic otherwise big problems. If you google "how to recover a semi-bricked Epic" an XDA thread will pop up. That has detailed instructions about Odin use.
@kennyglass123 you said the "how to"install odin is after this video a few links down. I couldn't find it if it actually says "how to install odin" specifically. If its labeled as anything other then odin, then I won't recognize it because I'm new to all of this & am not sure what I'mlooking for until its "spelled out"for me(lol). @JaDawn04 No the link to download Odin is there. You just decompress the folder onto your computer and run Odin from that folder. Using winrar or jzip or 7zip, just unpack the files in the Odin download into some directory and run it.

@stephacosta9 It is very difficult to get a Mac to recognize the Samsung Epic. Very few people have had success getting Heimdall to recognize the phone. Sounds like this is your issue. You will need to try this on a Windows PC if Heimdall won't recognize the phone.
What is the specific link for the odin I need for my gb el30 original epic 4g. I can't do anything until I get that 1st. Since this its my 1st time doing this, I don't know which one its the right one. All know is to go to android forums. idk what to do from there.

@Aquaboi14 Redownload and reinstall the drivers, get a better cable like a Blackberry cable, try different ports. Google How to restore a semi-bricked Epic and read that thread for more info and help.
@mystupidfacebook Probably a bad cable. It may charge but Odin is very sensitive and transfers a lot of data. Get a Blackberry heavy duty cable. Also try it with the battery out.
Ok I finally got this to work!!!!! It was damn frustrating though. Passed in like 7 seconds. I tried a different USB port and that seemed to work. After the fifth or sixth time though! LOL so if you guys are having issues just keep trying it is most likely your cable or the USB port.
I am having problems not sure what I am doing wrong but my computer is recognizing my phone and everything but it stalls at the end and just hangs in Odin it says zImage what did I do wrong? I'm thinking its bc I didn't have USB debugging on. Can you please help thanks man.

@qpking77 im using a samsung epic 4g not the epic touch 4g. i have firmware 2.3.6 and EL30 and for some god forsaken reason i cant get anywhere with flashing it just keeps freezing and i have to unbrick it x.x
@qbking77 Firstly qb...you truly are a king of all things roms. thanks for helping the rest of us out with all these video's. that being said...i recently 'down graded' to EC05, then got both OTA updates that brought me to EL30. I'd like to get CWM going, and I know you recommend notusing the default usb cable, but i've had ZERO problems with it up until trying to get CWM installed. I've got the current of everything, so will keep trying it/TS'n any problems. But I mainly wanted to TY!

Okay so this is really easy and all of your problems have the same solution. If it takes more than 30 seconds to finish it isn't going to. If you fail or if it freezes, close Odin, power down your phone, pull battery for 30 seconds, boot into download mode, re-open Odin, plug phone into a DIFFERENT usb port than previously, try again. If it doesn't work, repeat all steps and ALWAYS use a different usb port every time. I'll be damned if this doesn't work for every one of you. Took me 4 attempts.
I have an Epic with EL30 as well. tried this, hit the start button, the process started and now it is stuck here: "Get PIT for mapping.." and has been for 10 minutes. HELP!!! What do?!

Hi...when I started the ODIN (it recognized my phone) but it failed and now my phone has a pic of a PDA connected to computer (with a ! in a yellow yield sign) and I can't get it to start. Any ideas how to correct?

I have EL30 and when i clicked "start" on Odin it doesnt do anything, it finds my COM:3 But the command prompt on the bottom just stays at "Get PIT for mapping.." What the hell? Why does rooting the epic 4g take so much work.
When I go into "download" mode, my XP computer will not recognize device. If the device is powered on it will. Therefor when in "download" mode Odin is not recognizing software.....any tips?

I installed the CWM when I had EI22, but now sprint is trying to get me to update to EL30, what do I do to get it to stop asking me to install the EL30 update?
Still doesn't work for me. Got a brand new replacement phone today. If I'm understanding this right I have to do this so i can root from the zip file, only problem is when I go to root after this step it still only have the original 4 options. No install from zip option. Odin shows it went through and restarts. Any help would be great. I updated to 2.3.6 before I started this, so it's a brand new phone with 2.3.6.
@MrTechgasm You are not supposed to let it boot after Odin. You have to uncheck reboot. When it completes pull the battery, put it back in and 3 finger into CWM then flash the kernel.If you let Odin reboot it deletes the custom recovery.
@Kennyglass123 Thanks but still no go.Do I need to put anything on my phone before this step? Here is what I did step by step. Open Odin. Uncheck both auto-reboot and F. Reset Time. Then add the .md5 to the pda line. Put my phone in download mode. Connect and get the yellow connected box. Press start and let it run through until it is green and says pass. The phone now has download screen with a blue or green line across. I take out the bat. and put it in again. Then do the 3 button start.
@MrTechgasm OH, you didn't follow his link to the second part to root and put in a custom recovery. This viedo is just the kernel. Now you click on the next video on how to root EI22 or EL30. That part gets you the custom recovery and allows you to flash su.zip
@ds10911 either a bad cable, try a thick Blackberry cable or a bad download. also try it with the battery and sd card out of the phone. plug cable into computer and quickly put it into download mode
I had been trying this for a couple of days with no luck because Odin would not recognize my Epic. I dialed the code for the phone util menu (##8778#) and changed USB to 'modem' instead of "PDA". I also used a different cable (the one from my old Palm Pre) and it finally worked. Only took a couple of minutes. Thanks qbking!

So I'm not sure if the file I downloaded from XDA will work. When I load kernal-GB-3a.tar.md5 into Heimdall it says "firmware.xml is missing from the package" Is this cause I'm using Heimdall instead of Odin? I've got a Mac. Or will it still work??
Followed the directions to the letter and this worked perfectly. Just a side note, if you get stuck on "setting up connection" in ODIN, disconnect the USB and pull the battery and restart the phone. Then go to applications and enable USB debugging. Restart the process over and you'll be fine.

@sancoagu1 Best bet would be to remove all drivers and reinstall. There are 5 drivers that get loaded altogether.

@jportillo97 Does it show complete? Succeed 1, Fail 0? It may be a bad download. Try downloading again and remove the .md5 extension if you like.

@stephacosta9 It is very difficult to get Odin to work on a MAC. Your best bet it to try Heimdall but still is difficult. Try to use a friends PC.

I am having problems not sure what I am doing wrong but my computer is recognizing my phone and everything but it stalls at the end and just hangs in Odin it says zImage what did I do wrong? I'm thinking its bc I didn't have USB debugging on. Can you please help thanks man.

@brerackl21 if you're using a samsung cable, its most likely that. Otherwise try redownloading everything and starting over

@qbking77 - I followed this video (trying to root again after unrooting and updating to EL30) and Odin did not finish upload of the file kernel-GB-3a.tar.md5
. It stopped after "Initialization"... I had to unplug it and close Odin. I have retried many times with no success. I can get into download mode but can't turn the phone back on. get the picture of the phone, exclamation point, computer. Please help!!! Thank you!

@qbking77 Firstly qb...you truly are a king of all things roms. thanks for helping the rest of us out with all these video's. that being said...i recently 'down graded' to EC05, then got both OTA updates that brought me to EL30. I'd like to get CWM going, and I know you recommend notusing the default usb cable, but i've had ZERO problems with it up until trying to get CWM installed. I've got the current of everything, so will keep trying it/TS'n any problems. But I mainly wanted to TY!

Okay so this is really easy and all of your problems have the same solution. If it takes more than 30 seconds to finish it isn't going to. If you fail or if it freezes, close Odin, power down your phone, pull battery for 30 seconds, boot into download mode, re-open Odin, plug phone into a DIFFERENT usb port than previously, try again. If it doesn't work, repeat all steps and ALWAYS use a different usb port every time. I'll be damned if this doesn't work for every one of you. Took me 4 attempts.

I may be all set now! I took out the battery and sd card and plugged it back up and reran the ODIN and it passed. Hopefully the phone is all set now!

I have EL30 and when i clicked "start" on Odin it doesnt do anything, it finds my COM:3 But the command prompt on the bottom just stays at "Get PIT for mapping.." What the hell? Why does rooting the epic 4g take so much work.

@Vandantcyclone Try it with the battery and SD card out. If that doesn't work you need a better cable like from a Blackberry or Palm.

Still doesn't work for me. Got a brand new replacement phone today. If I'm understanding this right I have to do this so i can root from the zip file, only problem is when I go to root after this step it still only have the original 4 options. No install from zip option. Odin shows it went through and restarts. Any help would be great. I updated to 2.3.6 before I started this, so it's a brand new phone with 2.3.6.

@MrTechgasm You are not supposed to let it boot after Odin. You have to uncheck reboot. When it completes pull the battery, put it back in and 3 finger into CWM then flash the kernel.If you let Odin reboot it deletes the custom recovery.

@Kennyglass123 Thanks but still no go.Do I need to put anything on my phone before this step? Here is what I did step by step. Open Odin. Uncheck both auto-reboot and F. Reset Time. Then add the .md5 to the pda line. Put my phone in download mode. Connect and get the yellow connected box. Press start and let it run through until it is green and says pass. The phone now has download screen with a blue or green line across. I take out the bat. and put it in again. Then do the 3 button start.

@MrTechgasm OH, you didn't follow his link to the second part to root and put in a custom recovery. This viedo is just the kernel. Now you click on the next video on how to root EI22 or EL30. That part gets you the custom recovery and allows you to flash su.zip

@ds10911 either a bad cable, try a thick Blackberry cable or a bad download. also try it with the battery and sd card out of the phone. plug cable into computer and quickly put it into download mode

I had been trying this for a couple of days with no luck because Odin would not recognize my Epic. I dialed the code for the phone util menu (##8778#) and changed USB to 'modem' instead of "PDA". I also used a different cable (the one from my old Palm Pre) and it finally worked. Only took a couple of minutes. Thanks qbking!

So I'm not sure if the file I downloaded from XDA will work. When I load kernal-GB-3a.tar.md5 into Heimdall it says "firmware.xml is missing from the package" Is this cause I'm using Heimdall instead of Odin? I've got a Mac. Or will it still work??

@SCATTERBRAIN222 If using Heimdall, use 7zip to open the file and then put it into the zimage slot. It is only a kernel, not a full firmware.

Followed the directions to the letter and this worked perfectly. Just a side note, if you get stuck on "setting up connection" in ODIN, disconnect the USB and pull the battery and restart the phone. Then go to applications and enable USB debugging. Restart the process over and you'll be fine.
