For example, in Florida the area that is under the United States control extends to the shelf which is 200 miles out or so. I'm sure this sailboat was not more than 100 mi. out from coast. @ich1banGT1 200 miles.? Some territorial waters are about 12 miles. Its a grey area (no pun intended), Look up Rockall. Its an underwater platau, with suspected oil reserves beneath, claimed by Ireland, Britain and Norway. Ireland is closest, but closeness isnt the deciding factor.

@ANTIDALLAR Well, if an island forms 200 into coast of united states, or any other country, it belongs to the, but if its in the middle of the ocean, its anyones to take(but who would want an island in the middle of an ocean) and besides, the island to become massive would take hundreds of years
