Can't really understand why people are hating on Dream Theater. I guess they haven't heard their good songs? Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence/Octavarium/Count of Tuscany, and millions more. They have some of the most Musicality i've ever seen and especially with Mike Mangini hitting bass drum with Bass Guitar "Unisons" and Splash cymbals with one hand with John Petrucci's stabs. I guess people can't necessarily hear the music/skill that each one of them brings to the band.
People shouldn't even try to compare when Rush went to keyboards in the 80's to what Jordan Rudess does with his keyboard. Totally different approaches. Mike doesn't hate keyboards he just didn't groove with what Rush was doing at the time.
semilivedj you must be the most arrogant idiodic person i've ever fucking seen, you really think someone like neal morse would look up to and put up with portnoy if he was as much of a dick as you say he is, he left dream theater because he wanted to pursue different things and different projects not because he was a dick, the band even said they would never be the same without him you think there going to say that if he's a douche bag, lebree is the douche bag not portnoy. he has changed drums
He is a dick! Nobody wants to play with him.He will yell at you on stage if you miss a part for any reason.Dream Theater pushed him out.Because he is a dick! He talks like a dick, acts like a dick.Is a dick!
Portnoy has a surprisingly closed mind... He always sees music and drum rhythms as some stereotypical genre or as someones lick, and he does not consider the true deeper musical value and meaning of them....
@mystikrhythms61 well it s a Different approach of keyboards! The rush keyboards have little things in common with the Dream Theater keyboards!! You can't say for example whitesnake and Dream Theater are alike because they use a guitar!!;)
@Enigmatikos Agreed. Not to mention, Rush is a 3 piece band doing a 5 piece gig. Where as dream Theater needs the 5. And DT's music isn't near as interesting in my opinion. Rush's epic songs (10 minute or more) don't seem as long as they really are. They're broken up into parts brilliantly and very little repeats itself.
Portnoy is a baby before Peart and so is Dream Theater before the great RUSH. Peart is so natural while Portnoy tries just to hard to make an impression. RUSH rules
I really wish that people would stop comparing musicians to other musicians when leaving comments. I get it. You like a particular drummer , or bassist, or whoever.. I'm sure that the person who posted that particular video didn't intend to insult your favorite guy, nor did he post this for you to shoot down or start an argument. I'm more a Peart fan than a Portnoy fan, but I've never thought either was "better" than the other. if you dont like the post, dont watch it.
@ohYew812 youngest hall of famer for drums and he is just "pretty good", you mean like your friend in high school who is/was "pretty good". come on...
Peart and Portnoy are different drummers. I personally think they are both equally as good as the other, just different styles. I do think it is a compliment to Neil to always have every great drummer in the world compared to him...
@mystikrhythms61 Very true, but in Dream Theater the keyboards never dominated the guitar. He meant Rush were too synth-poppy for him through most of the 80's. Rush lost a lot of their die-hard fans in that period.
@mystikrhythms61 God forbid, a band tries to stretch beyond what made them famous unlike his dopey former band. What an arrogant asshole this guy is. And the thing is, he isn't original. He's got no feel. Having chops doesn't make you a legend. I suppose using copies of other people's drum kits and pretending to be them passes as a legend. @my You can't compare the use of keyboards in Dream Theater to how they were used in Rush. To many, the keyboards in Rush took away some of the complexity of their music, compared to their more guitar orientated material. DT incorporates keyboards in a manner that actually increases the complexity and texture of their music (especally since Rudess joined). I don't like keyboards in metal bands, however in DT they not only work, they're an essential component of their music.
@mystikrhythms61 It wasn't the keyboards that he disliked, but the change that the music took when the keyboards became the primary instrument. You can't say that subdivisions and xanadu are very similar, even though they are both great songs.
@mystikrhythms61 Mike is a hypocrite...nearly every band he has played in has keys oh and Mike...all of those 70s records you jerk off to? 2112? Hemispheres? A Farewell To Kings? Yeah...all keyboards on there bro. Ditto Permanent Waves. Keys on every single song.
@mystikrhythms61 I get your point, but keyboards sound better in his band than they ever did during the "techno" era of Rush. I lost some interest in them at that time as well for the same reason. They got away from their operatic concept pieces and good kick-ass, RUSH-style rock and got too experimental.
@mystikrhythms61 well man i understand this kinda shit because for example i love to play death metal but i almost never listen this style! Except Death, compared with them there´s not other death metal :-)
@tastefulphrasing - Evolution of Peart? LOL ! PYHOOYA! Fuck man, your not even sane anymore, not even close. Mike is a street punk drummer lucky enough to afford a big kit to bang all over - he's talent but NOT creative, he steals - he always played covers good.
@tastefulphrasing That's completely absurd. Peart is the evolution of Peart. He's still learning and developing as a drummer after all of these years. As much as I love the guy, Peart never was the greatest and never claimed to be.
I'm not caring to go back and look but go watch a Rush live DVD and he hits those drums hard. I've been watching them for the past hour and I was thinking how hard he hits those. It's amazing, really. I can't hit that hard and I've been drumming for a long time, to Rush even if you care to check my channel. He hits REALLY hard, he just doesn't play with the sound loud. Remember. Analog recording was a lot more dynamic than music today. The softer songs are soft for a reason. Now its all loud.
For all of you idiots saying Peart "lacks the power" of a Mike Portnoy...throw your sticks away you have no clue what you are talking about. Neil Peart is 6'4 and hits his kit as hard as anyone else on the scene. Remember this you idiot saplings who know nothing about drumming - you don't have to throw your hands high in the air in order to hit a drum hard. Now go back to your practice pads and sheet music and study. Oh yeah and it is pronounced "PEEERT" Mike is saying it RIGHT. Dummies.
@rammjet666: It takes a lot more control to hit the kit soft and slow, than it does to hammer on it hard and fast. That's what these kids don't realize. The natural error musicians make it pushing tempo; it's harder to slow down and lighten up because it goes against that natural tendency. Especially when you're Peart's size...that's control and discipline right there.
@MrHandfromEbay this hippie get slaid more than you, more money than you, and more people like him than you...so I guess I see why you envy him hahahahaha.

1) Dream Theater was never that great as people pretend
2) He was kicked out of said /\ overrated band
3) Avenged Sevenfold is one of the best things that has ever happened to todays rock music, they made the step from screamo to something totally different.
4) Mike is doin "The Rev" justice by carrying on his legacy in Avenged 7X
@drummerb0y117. You are worng. DT were not overrated when Portnoy was in the band. Plus Avenged Sevenfold good though they are are not as good as DT. Don't ever forget that.
@DannyWDrums There is indeed an argument. Because Peart is not the "best." There are drummers that exceed his abilities in every aspect. He is undoubtedly one of the greats, but certainly not the best.
@LukeSnyderMusic Most of today's top drummers vote Neil as the top drummer for reasons beyond drumming. There is no other drummer that has infuenced more drummers than Neil Peart. They all say it. The magazines say it. Neil's the only one that doesn't say it.
i think mike holds back his feelings a bit cause hes always being compared to Neil. he should just let it go and say it like it is. I love mike but Neil is King.
I really respect Neil, love him, great drummer. But i think that he lacks the power Portnoy has, when mike hits he hits hard (at least he can hit hard if he wants to), and for his style i think it's a great fit. For my style it's a better fit too.
So who's better?
Irrelevant.
I don't care, all i care about is that both drummers are worth using as an influence in your own drumming. Comparing drummers is just childish and useless.
@molomono Watch Neil play, he hit's extremely hard! Too hard, as far as I'm concerned. A lot of drummers labor far to much in trying to crush the drums and it's really just wasted energy. Good dynamics play a far bigger role in driving the groove and staying in the pocket. Watch Portnoy and then go watch Dave Weckl.
@justentime77 I just did and Weckl, as good as he was, is boring compared to Portnoy. Good dynamics is important but when you lay into the drums they produce a really excellent sound - especially the toms. Loud dynamics are usually better during a solo and when you play rock, you really gotta hit hard. Playing softer is for jazz. Weckl does his hard himself on the accents and backbeats. I think Dave is a better fusion drummer, but Mike is better at prog rock, double bass, etc.
@metalmike83 Are you really comparing Mike to Weckl? Weckl with one hand and one foot can do more than Mike with an extra pair of limbs. Not saying portnoy is a bad drummer, i think his excelent but weckl is just a different league than portnoy. not even comparable.
@gotmonkeyfinger I don't know about that. Neil is a very great, technical drummer, but he is a "tighty whitey". Check out drummers like Lenny White, or if you are a prognut, I really dig Christian Vander. Jazzy and scary at the same time -- how is that possible? Neil Peart is (ironically) the great drummer of the masses. It's ironic, because the Ayn Rand "masses vs. the individual" stuff. Well, the masses thing he's the greatest drummer. Drummers who listen to lots of different music? He's great
@TmmySaxondale Not trying to argue and not saying I intimately know Neil Peart; but I'm fairly sure he drew on more influences than hard rock. In fact, I'm 99.99% positive of that because they said Peart repped the original drummer because the original was too caught up in hard rock only. Secondly, I'm fairly sure he never tried to get so many follower. Again, I'm very sure, as he has said, he doesn't even like signing autographs.
Can't really understand why people are hating on Dream Theater. I guess they haven't heard their good songs? Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence/Octavarium/Count of Tuscany, and millions more. @REALCougarsRmales
Listen to as many drummers as possible. Come up with your OWN opinion.
Mjbabycakes7072 1 year ago
@LukeSnyderMusic Most of today's top drummers vote Neil as the top drummer for reasons beyond drumming. There is no other drummer that has infuenced more drummers than Neil Peart. They all say it. The magazines say it. Neil's the only one that doesn't say it.

neil was a big influence to mike , but mike does everything better, mike is like bacon!!!!!!
AKtifosi 1 year ago
Peart is the king and Portnoy is the general
6393dude 1 year ago
@6393dude I think it would be more accurate to go by Neils more common nickname "the Professor".
If Neil is the Professor, then Mike is the Student.
PsuedoNam 1 year ago
@PsuedoNam I would say Portnoy is the Dean.

Portnoy is the Kobe of drumming.

i think mike holds back his feelings a bit cause hes always being compared to Neil. he should just let it go and say it like it is. I love mike but Neil is King.

oscarskate1 1 year ago
@gotmonkeyfinger Um...what? Idt Mike should do anything other than keep being Mike. Portnoy > all.

@gotmonkeyfinger and those tatoos make him look a little less... professional maybe? Idk they're just kind of a turn off.
halodemo65 10 months ago
@halodemo65 That's merely subjective.
Comparing drummers is just childish and useless.
molomono 10 months ago
@molomono Watch Neil play, he hit's extremely hard! Too hard, as far as I'm concerned. A lot of drummers labor far to much in trying to crush the drums and it's really just wasted energy. Good dynamics play a far bigger role in driving the groove and staying in the pocket. Watch Portnoy and then go watch Dave Weckl.
justentime77 10 months ago
@justentime77 I just did and Weckl, as good as he was, is boring compared to Portnoy. Good dynamics is important but when you lay into the drums they produce a really excellent sound - especially the toms. Loud dynamics are usually better during a solo and when you play rock, you really gotta hit hard. Playing softer is for jazz. Weckl does his hard himself on the accents and backbeats. I think Dave is a better fusion drummer, but Mike is better at prog rock, double bass, etc.
metalmike83 7 months ago 2
@metalmike83 Are you really comparing Mike to Weckl? Weckl with one hand and one foot can do more than Mike with an extra pair of limbs. Not saying portnoy is a bad drummer, i think his excelent but weckl is just a different league than portnoy. not even comparable.

@manicospic you are also uneducated.
XxStrongDrums1996xX 5 months ago
@gotmonkeyfinger Totally on the money!
nodrush80 9 months ago
@gotmonkeyfinger I don't know about that. Neil is a very great, technical drummer, but he is a "tighty whitey". Check out drummers like Lenny White, or if you are a prognut, I really dig Christian Vander. Jazzy and scary at the same time -- how is that possible? Neil Peart is (ironically) the great drummer of the masses. It's ironic, because the Ayn Rand "masses vs. the individual" stuff. Well, the masses thing he's the greatest drummer. Drummers who listen to lots of different music? He's great
TmmySaxondale 4 months ago
@TmmySaxondale Not trying to argue and not saying I intimately know Neil Peart; but I'm fairly sure he drew on more influences than hard rock. In fact, I'm 99.99% positive of that because they said Peart repped the original drummer because the original was too caught up in hard rock only. Secondly, I'm fairly sure he never tried to get so many follower. Again, I'm very sure, as he has said, he doesn't even like signing autographs.
