Some of you may be interested in avant-jazz-er Don Cherry's version of this raga. One of the few "fusion" guys not to flub it up or turn hindustani into some sort of meaningless exotica instead of the beautiful and intensely human/familiar music that it is.
Malkauns is such a soothing raag, and comes alive in the hands of this master :) Also, the playful, unscripted interactions are routine in Indian classical music - every performance, while following an overall structure, has enough improv to make it unique.
PS: Malkauns in Hindustani === Hindolam in Carnatic
I love how they're so obviously really having fun and enjoying the interaction as well. You can really see their appreciation for each other. Such a wonderful thing to witness.
The Bhajan is "Man Tarpat Hari Darshan Ko Aaj", in Baiju Bawra, sung magnificently by Md Rafi. A youtube search on Malkauns will bring it up easily enough.
I love the raga Malkauns, knowing it from Pandit Ravi Shankar and Ustad Bismillah Khan, but when i tried to play something resembling it on my guitar and sax it always came out sounding bluesy, as it's very similar to a blues scale on a dominant, but this is the first time i can hear the bluesiness in the traditional playing of the raga, i love it.
Amazing performance and the best part is that although the tabla player is equally good as ustadji, he still uses his tabla skills only to support Ustadji rather than try to prove his mastery....Truely Professional!!
most of the song is improvised, and each improvised section or phrase is often ended with a pre-composed set of few notes, or part of a song that was pre-composed. so I would say 90% is improvised.
Ustad Amjad Ali Khansahab is one of the classiest musicians I have ever seen. It is such a great feeling to see such a cultured person creating great music like this.
I so agree with you. His music is great as it is but he is also such a beautiful human being it just makes his music very refreshing, peaceful and purifying.
that was fantastic malkauns! thans for posting this.

Ustad Sarvar Sabri, of the ajrada gharana. He is the son of the very very great Ustad Sabri Khan sahib. He is about 21 in this video

are those interactions near the beginning prearranged? - or is it just improv?
