anyone who takes influence on religion or philosophy from a band that was influenced by "Lord of the Rings" and the "Hobbit" is in trouble .....enjoy the music which is advanced but their other ideas are about as sophisticated as a geeked out 8th grader playing Dungeons & Dragons .
Neil Peart took influence from Tolkien because it's good literature. Neil Peart wrote tons of other pieces of music philosophical in nature. Hell, most of their music has either something to do with politics, religion, and or philosophy. So comparing them to geeked out 8th graders playing D&D is quite possibly the most asinine thing you can say about them. I'd probably feel the same way about that even if I wasn't a big fan of theirs.
he is a fantistic drummer, but i dont think for any rhodes scholar awards anytime soon,,,,his ideas about this religion & philosophy are somewhat basic and at an advanced 8th 9th grade level so i think that is true , he never went to college and the only book he published about traveling across the USA in a motor cycle is kinda dull w/o any new ideas.....at one part he descibes a sceen in which a waitress is given a hard time and Neil's responce to her is " dont worry about ".....sage advice
You don't need to be a Rhodes scholar to perceive the world around you and think about it in an "advanced" nature. As for the single example you've provided, I'm sure you, me, or anyone else for that matter including said Rhodes scholars have been in situations where given advice is less than "sage". Regardless of all this, sometimes basic lyrical concepts promote the deepest thinking.

You are so right! Man is a primative creature that needs religion as an emotional crutch and to keep him in line, creating morality through fear. I totally agree, man has the right to worship. And, there is no better place to do it than in his home and church.
The Soviet Union was a totalitarian anti-religious society. They were wrong because they were merely trying to destroy one dogma to impose another one.
This axe is much more metaphorical and doesn't involve acutally forcing people to shed religion.
Man USED to be a religious creature. And it is his need for an explanation for unexplainable things that created "God". Fortunatly, many people are starting to see through the farce of religion. Primitive humans needed God, we don't.

seriously,a religion is is the reason why this country was founded, thus the reason why you live in a country with the highest standard of living and freedom.
I thought this country was founded because a colonial project by the English monarchy allowed some protestant denominations to run away from persecution by others, who later rebelled because the colonial merchant class couldn't swallow taxation without representation. They do mention 'providence' and 'the almighty' a few times, but on that basis, Rome or the French Revolution or any number of Greek philosophers could lay equal claim to 'influencing' the constitution.

Great. Another great band that turns to preaching its views. Rush is a great band but if they start preaching about how there is no God and whatnot I may lose a lot of respect for them. Why can't bands just play music and not have to intertwine some lame message? It's what happened to the scorpions and I hope Rush doesn't start getting all preachy.

I don't understand why musicians shouldn't act like human individuals instead of being like clowns who are here only to entertain the idiots. Oh yeah, and there's no politics in this instrumental piece, right?
Oh yeah, sure, it's better to offend every person that believes there is a God by making a video like this. Rush is awesome. Don't get me wrong. I understand that they have the right but it doesn't mean that they should have to convey a message that would offend a lot of people including me.
Rush write intelligent songs for intelligent listeners. Unfortunately the religious types just don't have the grey matter to understand. Check out songs like Jacobs Ladder and 2112 and be enlightened.
Lord of the Rings is a story which is not meant to be taken seriously, if you use it as a kind of escapism then you totally lose its meaning. It's an epic it doesn't need to be "intelligent", it needs to resourceful, and it is in fact as intelligent AND resourceful as many of the great epics and mythologies. If you can read Christian Mythology for its stories, then you can as well read Tolkien, what you should NOT do is believing that they're anything more than products of people's imaginations
they have every right to be preachy,, you contradict yourself by telling them to use their 1st amendment rights and in the same breath tell them not to.. they as artists can intertwine whatever they want and if you really liked the music you wouldnt let it bother you
woow this is a neat video... is this the actual video or fan made??? and does anyone know if there is a place to look at those "trees" in still pictures????
I have been hanging with them since 1974. If you want their more complex compos then get the newest albums Snakes&Arrows and Vapor Trails. I think these two are their best yet. However, all their works are simply excellent. Moving Pictures, Permanent Waves and Power Windows are also some powerful albums. It's not about the trees themselves. It's about what they mean. They're all manifestations of narcissism. The tree analogy just helps to say it's malignant like a tumor... or anything that grows.
Of the others besides Rush who were nominated, three were worthy nominees who actually know how to play instruments, and it wouldn't bother me if they won (e.g. Steve Vai).
Instead, they give it to Bruce Springsteen, a guy who can't even sing, let alone play a guitar, and never mind perform an instrumental.
The Grimy Awards are a collosal fucking joke, run by coke-snorting, back slapping, payola-taking slime.
and they are coming back to nola after a damn decade 2008, to reestablish the trees that we had let grown take a look down take a look down, to pedal stick your feet on.
Congrats on the Grammy Nomination! RUSH has been nominated for a 2008 Grammy in the Best Rock Instrumental Performance category for "Malignant Narcissism." Congrats to the boys!
the trouble with the trees - didnt even see it comin - fantastic video - great tie-in to Peart's whole-world philosophies and The Trees. hahah. a canadian lumberjack.

Does no one understand the video?
It's not about the trees themselves. It's about what they mean. They're all manifestations of narcissism. The tree analogy just helps to say it's malignant like a tumor... or anything that grows.

Hm...I wonder how they'd show Sikhism? The Islam and Hindu trees intertwining, maybe?

The Grimys prove once again they are a joke.

Cool video! Wow. Very good example on why religion always leads to disagreement, violence, and general stupidity!

Rush has always had this suspicion of organized religion going back to Free Will. Interesting video, thanks for posting.

That even applies to 2112. Collectivism isn't just a crime of communism, obedience is a demand made by the religious.
