oh my gosh look at that the boy got in the front seat of a pickup and without a booster seat good grief how did we ever survive back in those days. I'll bet they let him ride a bike with no helmet too. I miss the good ole days when you could ride through town with your daddy in a pickup or drink from hydrants outside the house or maybe even get your butt whipped when you did something wrong.
@cjone33 This made me laugh! I remember sitting in my dad's lap and him letting me steer the car! I wouldnt dream of letting my kids do that but those were the good ole days! :)
I was put up for adoption when i was 3weeks old an i have a father and mother that were there for me thru everything! I consider them my real parents. I did find my bio-family an things went good for a while then everything just went to $hit. I knew what kinda father my bio-dad was an he was the scum of the earth! I made a promise to myself an God i'd never be a piece of $hit like him and be like my dad i have now. My father is a great man! i love you dad your the best!
An unfortunately recurring them in 20th 21st century American society, as hard as it is on the parents, one can only feel deeply sad for the children caught in the middle, this is just a great tune and a necessary look at at an uneviable state of existence in these here United Staes of America!
My dad did the best he could to spend time, but he only had so much time.
I had that same bulls hat and lived this.. I remember every other weekend how happy i was just to see him on fridays, waiting for that chevelle to pull up..
Eventually i stopped seeing him, in a way I thank him cause I'm doin my best not to relive his mistakes to jeopardize mine and my kids lives.
I'm a child of divorce myself, and this song came out around the same time my parents divorced. It's hard to believe it's been 18 years since that happened. I'm living with a guy who's going through a divorce now, and every time I see his kids leave, I try to place myself in their shoes, and tell them, "I know how you feel, and I feel sorry for you." I also tell the guy about this song, and I'd like to play it for him one of these days. No young child should go through something like that.
21 years I paid support for a child that was not mine. I don't regret a minute of it. He does call me dad and he's doing just fine. I'm proud of him and I love him to death.
Doug drank himself crazy and straight out of the music biz. Sad, I graduated high school with him in 1978 from Eisenhower High School, have known him all my life...what a sad story.

Sadly for us, too many of us are labeled as dead-beat dads and rightfully so. Shame on a guy who calls himself a "MAN" who can't spend time with his kids. I nice tribute song that shines light on us men who do care and adore our kids no matter what life throws at us. I too miss 90's country. Nashville should be ashame of themselves for taking this genre of country out. America needs positive country music right about now. This one is just one of them. Thanks for the post....lump on my throat : [
a beautiful song ,with words that are so real these days, and what a great singer Doug is, I love all his music, up there with the best of them. What would we do without country music, I hope I never know. Thanks for posting.
Sadly, an anthem for way too many American Fathers and Mothers and children, (Regardless of their sex), damo I love this song! Thanks aloisiov6 for the upload, and You tube as always for the space! To all the kids: Hang in there it won't last FOREVER!
This video almost makes me cry every time I see it. This was a #1 song, it's a shame that radio doesn't play it anymore. I even requested it on my local station and they never played it.
#1 at the end of 1993. That really wasn't that long ago. My local radio station plays stuff from the 60's on up, but after requesting it several times, I gave up. It's crazy that they won't play it.
After thinking about it, although this doesnt seem practical, the station may not even have the song. Not to long ago I was reading about how "playing music" formats have changed with radio stations. Back in the 90's they used CD's, today its all computerized. Perhaps with the transition some songs were lost. Like I said, doesnt seem practical but you never know. And of course if they do not have it you would think they can get it.
I have also heard that everything is computerized these days. I guess things may have gotten lost in transition, but the local stations still play stuff that was made long before CD's and cassettes. I think it's a matter somewhat of what happened to Doug (although they don't really play Tracy Lawrence, Tracy Byrd, Mark Chesnutt, etc. anymore either) due to his personal problems. But yes, you are right, you would think that they would be able to get it. I found his albums online.
This song is exactly how me and my dad used to be... i remember my granny tellin me that she heard this song come on the radio and she hollered for my dad so he could listen to it... after that we went out and got the tape... every word in this song is exactly like me and my dad... I LOVE YOU DAD>>> His Name is Steve Preston

This is the song I dedicated to my (step) daddy when I was a little girl. Lord knows any man can be a father but it takes a special man to be a dad.
