I have seen a mother baboon throw her baby at a predator to save herself. When a new leader takes over the troop, he kills all the babies, so the females will go in to heat and mate with him. The mama's might try to stop him, but if it comes down to her getting hurt, she will sacrifice the infant. They are NOT good parents.
We have to stop trying to putting human traits on these things, they run on reaction and instinct.

look what a big monkey treats a little monkey by holding in to it's tail.
