i didnt grow up in the 70's but from my research on music it looks like a lot of people had similar styles and great moves back then and i dont think they refernce each other at the end of there videos so why should michael be the only one who has to do it. simply put its just people trying to jump on someone that has fame so that hopefully they get fame aswell without putting in the hard work
yes that was my point aswell dance coz you wanna dance not only if people mention your name if they get fame. so many good dancers you see on youtube. so now if michael went on stage for the this is it concert he would now have to have a 5 minute speech at the end of the concert reading names of everyone he has seen dancing or els thay may think he has stollen a move or start crying about how he didnt mention them.
Everything we ever do is a copy. We were poppin n lockin in the 60s and 70's before these children were born. Do you see us complaining about kids like these doin our moves? Hell nah! All flavours of dance should be shared with the whole world. We would get together on the street with everybody and we would share our skills with each other. We weren't stealing each others moves. Check out Michaels vids from the 70's and he's poppin lockin doin the robot. These dudes need to get over themselves.
No doubt mike was a quick study, a dynamic performer, and phenomenal dancer. But to be so egotistical not to pay homage to folks who helped you so that they can get a "eg up" is just wrong.
For all the folks who think the boogaloos are lying, check out MJs earlier dance moves. No doubt Mike could dance, but there is a pronounced shift in his style of movement at one point in the 80s, and I believe it's due to their training. Mikes signature move prior to that was his spinning and a few "James Briwn"moves and yes, I HEARD the infamous "children of ghetto remark he made and was shocked. Mike even gave props to Fred Astaire for influencing his dancing but left the Boogaloos hanging.
oh and another thing if michael ows you money for moves then you guys also owe spider man and thor a whole lot more money but you dont see them complaining they out saving the world ;) you should dance and do music coz you love to do it not only if people promise to mention your name. michael liked learning from others and then trying to perfect it. he learned used those ideas along with his own made the best music to go with it, dressed a million bucks on stage and sold millions, dont hate
but look you cant own a dance move ok, and did you ever think that maybe the reason he said kids from the ghetto is because he didnt just like your style of dancing but also the other kids that were around so if he were to give you credit he needs to name every other kid in the ghetto by name. though you guys are some of the best dancers and i respect you, obviously michael took that style of dance to a whole new level. to michael music wasnt just about dancing it was more than that.
im seeing a bunch of angry people when i watch this clip. and its sad because what did you expect michael to do turn around and give you his mansion and his bentley because you all had similar dance moves. i mean michael always says he always loved watching james brown, fred astaire, jackie wilson and so on but if you notice depending on what interview you are watching he may add another perfromers name or he may sometimes forget to say another artists name, he says what ever comes to his head
could steal your idea for a song, have it go platinum 5 times over and give you a job teachin my kids how to play the piano. The different styles DID originate with some of these guys. NOT ALL, but a lot. Crazy Legs came from poppin pete, who got that from watchin crazy legs move while he was breakin. Pete gave credit where it was due, all they're saying is that if you teach someone a good deal of a craft, and that person doesn't properly acknowledge you..THAT'S DISRESPECTFUL. PERIOD.
@1980Triumph Shud STFU and Stop Dickriding MJ's nuts so hard...it's ok to say he stole the moonwalk and other shit...doesnt change the fact he's the biggest star....even if he jacked some of the world's most incredible dancers.
shut up ppl do yoll evn knw who these guys are ppl they created this stuff and micheal said he learned it from street people cmon mann evn they deserve some respect no hurts but dats wad i feel
One thing is fact. Michael could learn faster and better than any other dancer lol...Sure, he did not have all the techniques in the world. With his charisma and grace, he could make the simplest dancee look 100 times better.
MJ started dancing at age 5. There is video proof of that. He danced till his last breath... There is video proof of that also. In a nutshell, he worked harder than any other dancer on earth.
I think it's just sad to see how bitter a lot of the older poppers and lockers have gotten, always hating on the new generation style of popping/locking and saying that they're the best in the whole world. I mean I respect them and it might be true that they're the best but that's not a reason for them to wear it out and hate on the younger dancers. ALL of the younger dancers respect them yet they don't get any back.
I don't care if he is Suga pop or Suger Smacks......he is a bitter person. The EB's like to credit their style as being original but they were all taught and their style did not originate with them, they took it from others as well. He is ignorant and just plain out WRONG in a bunch of areas........MJ didn't have to publicly acknowledge them, he GAVE THEM ALL JOBS multiple TIMES!!!!!!
@1980Triumph Yeah? Who thought the EB'? Enlighten us. So if he hired them for a job it means he doesn't have to give credit for the fact that they thought him? What kind of dumbass logic is that?
Listen to how ignorant some of these guys are, here Michael worked with them in 1980 nad he still used them in Thriller, Beat It, Captain EO, and Ghost yet SOME of them act as if Michael stole from them, seriously why work with him all those years. Also Michael was a noted dancer and he was popping before he met them, yet he still worked with them to learn more about it, paid them and got them jobs on his videos and stuff. I think MJ did enough, MJ did the robot in 74-before he met them.
check out the first comment with a rating. The EB didn't originate anything anyway. Their whole style was copied anyway. HAHAHAHAHA.......some of these guys are legit, others are just angry and sad. Again MJ was a noted dancer years before working with them. These guys are good and I like watching their clips but this stuff on MJ bums me out.
MJ was popping back in 1977, go check it out on youtube!! He did work with them but these guys like he stole stuff, which is odd considering their moves were stolen too. This guys says Michael learned the robot from Slim, but MJ was going the Robot in 73-74, again go check youtube. MJ was a combination of all styles and actually never did popping in his videos which again he was noted as a dancer from, he also didn't pop lock on Motown 25, just moonwalk
@1980Triumph HEY WHY ARE YOU TALKING AS IF YOU WERE SO SO SO SURE ABOUT IT? DID YOU WERE THERE?? LOOK AND IM SAYING THIS IN GOOD TERMS, NO MEAN TO TALK BADLY, AND SORRY IF MY ENGLISH IS NOT SO GOOD. BUT, THIS GUYS ORIGINATED AND WERE THERE IN THE CLUBS WHEN EVERYTHING HAPPEN. YOU CANT SAY ITS NOT TRUE!!!! THEY SPENT MOST OF THEIR LIFE DANCING IT, CAUSE THIS DANCE WAS PART OF IT. ANYBODY IS CRITICIZING MICHAEL , WE ALL KNOW ITS AMAZING!!!
Whats the problem with you guys? I mean..funk styles were born in the clubs, they were dancing and they kept dancing for years so now each style has its own name. How could you be doubting about that michael Jackson learn from them? i mean..they were dancing this styles in the clubs before knowing and before having a name as poping or locking. I met Suga Pop and Popin pete and they are both excelent dancer as well as michael jackson(R.I.P) ANYONE is trying to criticsie anybody COME OOOON, peace
@pamdanceehh I agree. Michael certainly brought plenty of his own invention to dance (mostly in HOW he did the moves more often than purely creating them) since he honed and practiced his ass off... but everyone learns from others, no matter how god-like some want to believe their favorite artists are.Things like the robot, etc... were done by entertainers not even dancing-- think mimes, and other variety shows long before funk styles. It all is sampled and changed a bit and can look great.
@abbeykroeter i love mj music, but you are not 100% right with "his own invention". look at Pop N Taco and you know from him mj got his famous style and look...
@breaklock Well "plenty" doesn't mean 100% anyway; I am thinking some of the panache Michael put on some moves are things he worked on, some copied from your reference and others, and some came up as new while practicing. I will look into Pop N Taco though thank you for the reference! I am not surprised if there is one more out there like hm that Michael learned from; and I'll enjoy seeing any of the pioneers if you remember some other names for me.
@abbeykroeter Well said! I have tried to tell many friends very much the same thing when they try to argue the justification in worshiping a few artists. I sighted mimes, and some entertaining dancers from the silent era that did some amazing yet odd work, but most people just don't seem to have time to believe the "conglomerate of talents" phenomenon as I call it... collecting the what you like, working into something solid on it's own. If anyone asks, give props to the ones that inspired it.
Just some of Michael, doing Robotic dancing back in the EARLY 70’s

As for the other talk, bottom line is:
Michael Jackson had a LOT of his OWN moves which were also popular.
You could get thousands doing the moves MJ did yet, it was Michael who stood out & became so well-known for it because it was simply the WAY he was able to *execute each & every dance move. He was a good tap dancer, too.
listen buddy: you could not have taught MJ how to pop and lock, your group electric boogaloos was created in 1977, and michael jackson was poping and locking since 1974, seen here watch?v=lD2OsUcgb00 , that means that Boogalo Sam did not invented this style, somebody else invented it way before 1974 because MJ sure got it from somewhere, from the GoGo brothers maybe?
@affiliate30 LISTEN BUDDY thats right may be. BUT its cause MJ also had "shabba-doo" from "the lockers" as choreogfaph. (and I also had the chance to learn from him). what they guys are talking is REAL. Michael he got talent, no question.. but he learnd everything from them - electronic boogaloo lockers also as the campbellock dancers. Michael is king (of pop) ever. but he did some shit for dancing. an special for the creators.. BIG LOVE TO ALL OF YOU EB's Lockers,Krump Kings, and all dancers
There really was footage of Electric Boogaloo doing the backslide (or moonwalk) on the Soul Train Awards in the 70's. Michael first did his famous moonwalk at Motown 25 in 1983.
It's obvious that MJ did in fact took moves here and there from other greats, and Electric Boogaloo were no exception.
According to "The Magic and the Madness" an biograpghy about MJ by J. Randy Taraborrelli, a dancer by the name of "Casper" gave MJ private lessons on how to do the moonwalk.
@KingofPepsi You can find moves like the moonwalk in tap dance routines filmed before 1950. Look up "first moonwalk" youtube.. it will be entertaining. Some of the footage is quite old.
@abbeykroeter, Yes, thanks, I had already seen those old black and white footages of the origins of the backslide or moonwalk. I still say that it wasn't executed so smooth, effortless, and eye-fooling until Electric Boogaloo and Michael did it. In fact, Michael took it to a whole new level and made it his own.
Compare MJ when he first debuted the move on Motown 25 to when he did it on his Dangerous tour. It's obvious that he mastered it to smooth perfection over the years.
The point is that yes he should of given credit for the boogaloos help, especialy sam. But that dose not mean he STOLE their dancing. He changed popping to what he thought looked good. It's baisicly a diffarent style now. So what I'm tryin to say is dont hate on him but understand that he should of gave credit for alot of his dancing to the boogaloos. End of conversation =).
@LeeshLove Fans of Michael made those moves "his own". They were still someone else's moves, even if Michael worked everything to a more highly entertaining level.
Back in England we heard about popping thing way back when....i myself have made some new moves in todays modern world...boogaloo sam did not invent all the moves but he did merge several ideas with help into a form that we know today...Mj had media working for him, but he should have given credit to boogaloo sam...i mean with that input the cradle of most western dance that has a pop or wave just would not be there...
I think no one person invents all the dances around today...but certain individuals actully put a dance together, that transcends a little party move and becomes something that a large number of people begin to get into... its what i call the Big Bang Theory...simply a moment when something becomes bigger than its self and all manner of people get into it, it may be Music Art Politics whatever but someone or a group are resonsible for that sudden surge of that art form or political idea..
I just think it its fucked up that people try To take credit for teaching someone something when they didnt Mj could dance way before they were even thought of
Sorry I have to lauch at all these dudes claiming they taught MJ in 1980 when MJ was doing the robot back when he released Dancing machine in 1973. Those dance where everywhere at the time,it went from step dancers to JB and then in the 70s the robot.Nobody can claim to invent the moonwalk not even J,Daniels, same with locking. There were dudes lockin long before these cats.Mj learned from evrybody so they did from him too I bet.I see jealousy
@fede4real and he stated that but many whites just don't know what dances were around in the black community. michael stated many times that he got his dances from black kids. there used to be a dance in the 60s called the camel walk that was very similar. did you see the vid on youtube of origins of the moonwalk showing it as far back as the 20s? locking came from campbell. sorry, i was there dancing on soul train, with the lockers. the poplock is different but hit LA in the late 70s.
I keep telling Negroes to patent and copyright your shit. you just give stuff away and then end up on the losing end when everyone else steals it and says they made it their own when you were doing the moves 30-50 years ago. played, yet again. jazz, blues, reggae, big band, rock & roll, rock, r and b, soul, gospel, cakewalk, jitterbug, swing, step, jive, pop locking, locking, krunking & all the dances and music in between. Everyone steals it, you end up shot by cops, without a country, in jail.
@ddsharper I'm pretty sure you can't copyright a STEP. If someone took your whole choreography, that's one thing, but the moonwalk is a step. It be like someone trying to copyright a C to G progression in music!
It's true, he paid them however he lied on Oprah where he learned the moves. I see that the guys are just mad at themselves for being played by MJ. MJ did them wrong, but he was only human too, I probably would have done the same MJ did and be doing the same thing this guys are doing if I were in there shoes!
@kazz6702 back then everyone learned from everyone, though these guys started it. every one was pop locking. I mean everyone. no new moves either. and few if any whites were doing it in LA. sorry folks
These Guys Are The Real Deal. Anybody Would Be Amazed About The Ages Of These Guys. They Are The Originals Of This Dance Form & Another Group Called "Demons Of The Mind"... Much Respect To The Group & The Members That Have Passed On. Skeeter Rabbit Is In This Film; This Was Done Way Before Michaels Passing Because Sketter Passed Away In The Month Of May Of 2006.
Fucking posers everybody trying to talk shit and take credit now that the man is dead hell micheal always gave credit when he learned something but noone can outdance or outperform micheal Jackson. If they are so good why dont we know who they are
@SwiftMustangs uhhh...they're not singers....therefore not marketable 2 corporate america...is it any wonder u dont know who they are. In all honesty if you knew anything of streetdance culture...u would know...these guys are LEGENDS...and it has BEEN known in the dance community for many decades who taught Mike...they just didn't sing a song about it. This was made b4 his death....and one thing I have heard Sugapop and Shrimp say in person is that MJ was vastly talented...learned moves wit ease
@SwiftMustangs most people never heard of bobby byrd or the jbs either...but u heard of JAYZ.....without cats like byrd &theJBs...there would be no hiphop....or pop 4 that matter
@SwiftMustangs dancers know who they are. The general public doesn't because dancers don't get publicity on this continent until probably recently with the TV dance shows. MJ was a pop star and as a result, got publicity. Stop with the "if they're so good, why don't we know who they are" arguments already; a little common sense will answer your question.
@Inmydreams09 these cats are late 40s to 50...dancing keeps u young lookin. They were late teens teaching Mike..and the Boogaloos taught him to pop...Slim the robot inspired Mike to learn the robot. Mike was a huge fan of Soultrain..and almost ALL his moves came from the best dancers of that show. Lockers,Jeffrey Daniels of Shalamar(who first did the backslide(moonwalk) on soultrain which Mike saw...later he evn learned tuttin..made up by another S.T. dancer MarkBenson aka King Tut
...we forget that these were all urban dance styles..NY AND LA were always ahead of the game....Mike was raised in anything BUT a big city and sheltered from citylife...he was "simply" a cat that could sing his ass off and pick up moves quicker than anybodys business...put that talent with cutting edge artistic streetdancers teaching him and you got a star in the making. He still had to have the Soul to put it all together...u cant teach flava&soul.. u have it are u don't and MJ def had both
@bboyillscience mike lived in LA at the time. I went to Fairfax High School with his brothers, Jackie and Tito. By the time this stuff came out he lived in LA. Sorry dude. Plus it doesn't matter. Black dance has always traveled across the US in lightning speed. We used to get our steps down before hitting the clubs. The soul train crew danced at a club in Inglewood every night just about to perfect their moves for the show.
@bboyillscience Everyone was doing it back then dude. It wasn't like slim and the lockers had a corner on it. You have to feel the time back then. blacks were in their own neighborhoods, throwing house parties every week. The clubs in LA were opened till 4 am.there were no curfews. blacks danced all of the time, in school, at home and at clubs and parties. There was no internet, youtube or integration per se. michael wasn't doing anything anyone else wasn't doing. Hard to imagine now I guess
From what I know, he didn't really start working with the EBs until the the Beat It and Thriller videos and 1983. He did work with Robot Dane in the mid 70s though
I just want to say that I believe Michael gave enough "credit". Ironically it seems Suga Pop is trying to take more credit. I know for a fact that Michael Jackson did no take his kicks from Poppin pete, maybe the "spidey-fingers", but not the kick. It' a jazz move and MJ studied Jazz and perfected the move. I know because I took Jazz myself.
he shoulda given credit where its due. michael took something that was purely something that was shared between the members of EB, and put it on stage and took credit for it
@JsouLful He always gave credit to black kids for his dance. back then everyone was doing those dances. you gotta understand that. he was just taking to the stage what we all did everywhere: clubs, parties and at home. It just wasn't like that man. You had to be there to understand.
I think Michael showed more than enough respect and homage and actual reverence for them, to include them in the entirety of his career.
Also Michael was doing the robot before he worked with them, they did a varied style. Michael did the robot back in 1973...they didn't work with michael in 1973 - 1974. Secondly wasn't it proven that they didn't invent anything and that Sam stole the entire dance style from others????
sam did not steal the entire dance style. he was primarily the creator of the electric boogaloo style. also michael paid for the EB to teach AND coach him.
@1980Triumph, michael wasnt doing anything more than what Robert Sheilds. did in 1971 ."sheilding" is was were this started from which is a form of pantomime.. which later became the robot dance... you can't clown here homie... sooooo
I know, my point is that, they made it seem as if Michael took everything from them, including the robot. I never said Michael invented the dance move. Nothing in dance was really invented, but it just variations of one move to another.
@1980Triumph, michael wasnt doing anything more than what Robert Sheilds. did in 1971 ."sheilding" is was were this started from which is a form of pantomime.. which later became the robot dance... you can't clown here homie... sooooo

...and even these guys probably created many moves from scratch, BUT I would bet that they were inspired by things they saw too. In my early attempts to breakdance in 1982-83, I tried to do the moves I saw and some developed into something else, and some people thought I "invented" a move here and there. They were derivatives, like a lot of performers. Jackson did that a lot, borrowed and made it better or different, AND invented his own stuff. All should try to site where they learned it from
Anyone who disrespects these guys is an idiot. Plain and simple and you know it. This is a rare chance to hear from some of the guys that never got much attention because they were so original nobody knew what to do with it yet, it remained "small time" in a way. Michael Jackson was awesome too, I only wish super talents like Michael gave cred to who they learned from right from the start, but producers, etc... probably keep it quiet on purpose.
@abbeykroeter true that dawg. IN krump everyone thinks LIL C is the main man... tight eyez (who actually made it) keeps it on the street, keeps it developing. Dude egst no credit from the world
MJ had a lot of talents and that's what makes him The King of Pop; He was incredible singer, song writer, choreographer, he has created a new way of making music videos and his own way of dancing. Well, Jeffrey Daniels taught him the moonwalk, but MJ executed it much, much better!!! Better than anyone(I never saw someone spinning like MJ) So, all these guys are great dancers, but only dancers, they don't have the packge of talents that MJ had. Peace and God bless you all !!
this thread is endless....I have seen better(hate to use that word when relating to artistic xpression) dancers in my lifetime....but a more talented singer I don't think we'll see in several lifetimes. That voice will never die...not to mention no matter who u are or how old u are....if its 1975 or 2075......if u hear a MJ song come on u can't help but want to dance....music like that is timeless.
Okay, where do i start, some of what they said is actually true, Except that Kick. Mike been doing that kick way before thriller album. Slim the robot did teach Mike the robot but he wasnt as good as Mike with it though. Mike been doing that kick since dont stop til you get enough an that off the wall " album.
The simple fact is if Mary Lou Retton taught you how to pop,and someone asks who taught you that....You simply say "Mary Lou" or your a fake bitch. It doesn't matter if you paid her or not....she taught you. This is the difference between all this mainstream pop media garbage and culture(as in TRUE ''hip hop'' culture) Culture...any culture teaches respect as its passed on to future generations. A person only has so long on top before the next gen of dancer comes along and brushes them aside.
ok dude, so u r saying MJ is a "fake ass bitch" cause he doesnt whip out a list of all the dncrs who have worked with him along the way? First of all please name the interview where he was asked "who taught you how to pop?" 2nd of all the interview with oprah was who taught you the moonwalk and I can name atleast 5 ppl - all "street dancers" who I know of who worked with him on the dance including Jeff Daniel, Coolie Jackson and Boogaloo Shrmp, so get ur facts straight before u call names
for one thing ...if u would listen instead of hearing what u want to hear...i'm not disagreeing with you on the facts that u said about Mike. It just cracks my ass up how ever since he died everybody wants to jump up like their is greatest defender or some shit. Not to long ago b4 MJ died people didn't want nothing to do with him...now everyone wants to jump on the bandwagon now that they realized they lost a great talent. 2 yrs ago when I would be rollin around bumpin MJs music ....
...people would look at me like I'm a crazy baby rapist, and guess what...I still jammed his music. Now everone acts like they're so hurt...so in reality u can say I think alot of people are "fack ass bitches". As for as the respect thing I'm just adding my thoughts on what these other legendary dancers are trying to say. Another thing...while alot of u kids are jumpin on the internet trying to learn shit easily without the work....real old skool cats like me had to learn the best way....
....by talking and dancing with the real people. You can get on the internet and look up all the "facts" you want, but u will never have the true experience of being in the mix. As for as getting my facts straight I have danced with many of these guys you are talking about. Shrimp stayed the whole weekend at my homeboys house and kicked it for example. So u think I'm gonna believe some written whatever by whomever...or the real muthafucker in front of me droppin knowledge...granted their version
...and when did I call ANYONE a name...I just straight honestly said...If someone asks YOU who taught you something, and you straight say something untrue...THEN YOU A FAKE DISRESPECTFUL BITCH. That statement wasn't aimed at Mike...but rather ANYBODY that fits that discription. I only know what people have told me about MJ...I don't know...I wasn't there. I do know that now they're are alot of fake cats ever since streetdance became popular again....watering down the culture with their BULLSHIT
I have been an MJ fan since I was 6 and always defended him and even when he was being wrongly accused I always jammed his music! I have also been breakin and popping for about 14 yrs it might be less than you but I have been around the bboy world for a long time and I have heard a lot of ppl disrepect MJ when in actuality he did a lot for the culture and dancers such as popping Taco etc. I wasnt there either but I have read interviews and listened to interviews by Jeff Daniel and Shrimp
and u know what u r right everyone has their own version...I have heard Shrimp praise MJ but then also put him down in other interviews. And yes although my knowledge is through the internet concerning old school cats influence on MJ there are so many that say they taught MJ this and that, that I know many dancers worked with him and it would be stupid for him to name them all each time he was asked about the moonwalk. Even if he did name some then others would be mad if he left them out
I guess what I am trying to say is it seems like the EB's seem to be bitter that MJ did not promote their name when arguably Jeff Daniel and Poppin Taco had a much bigger influence on MJ but honestly he worked with so many dancers that it is unfair to criticize him for not naming some of them(MJ is NOT a popper, he incorparates a variety of styles and made his ownstyle) especially when you kept accepting his money with a smile on ur face as recently as "Ghosts." That is just two faced
I agree with you on ALOT of old skool dancers attitudes. I understand how alot of these guys feel that hollywood screwed them..and I agree with them. The thing I strongly agree with you on is these guys need to get over that shit...move on. While people like you and I will never be considered more than good dancers...these guys will forever be considered legends to the dance community...to people like u and me They need to stop and think about that shit. Quit dwelling on the negative...
....they could be lookin at the fact that they were lucky enough to be in the right place and era in time to achieve what they did. They had several years of being celebs in movies and shit. Most of us don't have that luxury...all we have is our passion for our art. Maybe if they thought about that alot of them wouldn't be dead or alcoholics. For me its a dam shame to meet one of your childhood idols and all they want to do is drink 12pks all day. stay real and keep dancin che....peace
I def . agree with you man, the thing these guys were missing was financial and business education(but many were literally teenagers - so how can u blame em?). i was listening to an interview with Shrimp and they completely screwed him over with the contract to the Breakin series so dude is getting no royalties. u right - fact is many of these guys are legends and would gain a bigger following and have a lot more fans if they were more positive! either way i love the underground culture
man I'm not gonna put names out there like that...I have nothing but love for these guys. I'll just say there are a lot of OGs still in shape holding it down for the kultcha (wiggles, kenny, sugapop, king tut,alieness...just to name a couple. Then they also have alot of OG cats that got swallowed up by that corporate media machine, and didn't have the strength to pull it back together..peace to all the fallen streetdancers..living or dead -one
and if u want to talk about respect these guys need to stop spreading lies like they made MJ, they had very little impact on the man compared to Daniels and Poppin Taco amongst the many dancers. But MJ is on a level above all these cats bcs a lot of dudes would not be dancing or poppin if it weren't for him. He brought a lot of ppl up by making the moonwalk popular. They should pay respect to HIM! If they were so wronged - why did they keep taking his money and dancing in his videos?
I think some of u guys are missing what they are saying. Of course MJ is one of the greatest singers of our time...no debate there. Off The Wall gets bumped almost daily in my ride. What they are talking about is the respect thing. It doesn't matter if Jimmy,Joe,Jack,or freakin Jill made up the move or when. There is never any such thing as a totally original idea any way. EVERYTHING is inspired by some other idea. The creative process is in the evolution of things.
ok ok... thats funny! but you cant talk about what you want...we dont care! popn taco is the source of Michael Jackson poppin!! and not sugar pop or skeet! thats the truth!!! so learn
R.I.P michael but to all those who say he was doin this b4 he meet the EB's thats bull if u watch hiss old clips all he would do is locking thats all he didnt pop at all till he lerned n listin 2 what they said he said " he had a chance to say he lerned from the poppers n the boogaloo's but said i lerned it from kids in the ghetto its the fact that he didnt see them as dancer he saw them as ghetto kids
and you know what was in MJ's head? MJ first lived in a 2 bedroom with 8 siblings = poverty=ghetto. Why do EB's always call themselves street dancers? they would never say anything else. ghetto never came out Mjs mouth but everyone knows that poppin, bboying etc are street dances so MJ told it like it is. Finally - the robot is categorized as a street dance and even under the general(and misnamed) category of "popping" - watch dancing machine which came out before this group was even formed.
They left out The Original Moonwalker Jeffrey Daniels. MJ got his whole look, dress, hair & moves from Mr. Daniels. 1982 top of the pops tv show. Jeffrey Daniels presented the moonwalk to the UK during his Shalamar-A night to remember record he was promoting.
LEAVE MJ ALONE, HE WAS WAY FAMOUS B4 THESE GUYS WERE BORN...and he done the kick move b4 they even exist...and many celebs dnt mention there sources now its MJ ur complaining, he admitted he learnt these moves from other people and he also didnt make it his own the media did...so stop picking on him..his a legend R.I.P MJ....get over it!!!
Why does everything think they're complaining? They're telling the story. Part of that story is the feeling that something personal was taken from them that they didnt teach him.
I think that what people are also forgetting is that michael was HEAVILY influenced by BOB FOSSE....SNAKE IN THE GRASS...he admits this...check out the clip and you will see !
What's funny to me is anyone claiming they invented this or taught that because there are no new moves they all have been borrowed or taken from performers along time ago..there is a movie in the 30's showing a guy doing the backslide/moonwalk and the robot has been around forever...watch the old movies and tv shows...alot of breakdancers and poppers etc got their moves from watching kungfu theatre, cartoons, etc..so anyone can claime being taught but inventing it i doubt it.
in fact Tic-n-will one of the first electric boogalos wen they started out n fresno wen day had only 8 members was doin the back slide back in 75 and yes sam is a lie all he really did was boogalo
hold on i just remembered? oprah asked michaael jackson who made up the moonwalk michael said that he got it from kids from the gettho the inner cities who make up these type of dancing to the runing man etc then he showed her the moonwalk or Backslide as it known
well that was a big fat lie. I think michael wanted to be known as the best dancer so that he can say "he learned it from kids on the streets." note that he doesn't mention any name whatsover. suck a fuckin liar
this conversation is about how michael betrayed them, when u think of great dancing u istantly think Michael jackson, disregarding the fact that these men r really the ones that revolutionized dance, the only reason why thay taught michael is cause he paid them, i can hear his voice now "OMG!!! thats amazing i'll pay u anything to teach me that!!, then he got rich nd they were unheard of every since..
EXACTLY. MICHAEL NEVER MENTIONED THEIR NAMES! WHY DO YOU THINK THEYRE SO PISSED. He said he learned from kids in the ghetto! Michael is one of the best entertainers but he's fat liar too. I do love michael jackson's talent but it's a shame how much of a liar he is.
You guys need to get a grip on reality. You sold him something, and now you're complaining that he used it? Artists don't ever thank people they PAID for. You guys are breaching the agreement - we should have NO IDEA who any of you are. You disgust me - and I would barely call myself an MJ fan. All famous people pick up things from people without MENTIONING them ever again. If you wanted the credit, you should have made it famous. As if.
Even though he PAID them he should give THEM CREDIT THAT THEY TAUGHT HIM THOSE MOVES! And the fact that he lied about the moonwalk is just ridiculous. Paid or not paid michael should've given them more respect than lies. Michael lied about his surgery saying that he had it twice. Michael just lies a lot.
@TheSoSoAgnostic Agree that would be like MJ telling the world the trick of the moonwalker lean.Mj was ilusionist, used elements of magic etc in his shows. The magician never reveals the trick.By the way they didnt invented nothing, these dance developes in teh streets as Mj said.Mj also called New Edition to teach him, those moves were everywhere.MJ was poppin early 70s and doing JB back slides.Probably his staff asked around and brought these duedes to Mj to teach him what was poppin in da streets
if it werent for the boogaloos, michael would be nothing but a feminine singer, with vidiligo , would u still like him as much??, exactly thank the boogaloos for that.
lol, u r one of the people that worships him so much u just cant except it, michael is great and i love his work, but hes also a liar, he knows it, nd they know it, deal with it.......the only reason y its a big deal is because he said he got from somewere else than were he did, if he didnt want us to kno then he shuldnt hav said anything.
I agree with you. Michael was just afraid that the electric boogaloos will become famous. Michael always enjoyed the spotlight. He's exactly like a kid... lying a lot and wanting the attention. That's how kids usually are.
HOLD UP! I just watch MJ's Don't Stop Vid and granted, he wasn't poppin' or moonwalkin/backsliding - but he did do the kick that Sug says he stole from Spider. Looks like he was doing the move befoe he hooked up with them. They may have thought he stole it - but there's proof he was rockin' the high knee move before he met them.
you know they sound like there is some sour grapes.Michael was able to take what you guys never noticed as genius work to the next level. He probably only said he learned it from the kids in the ghetto, because he as a business man never wanted to promote where he attains his resources. Why should he.Alot of things Michael enhanced, but he always said he borrowed from the greats.Fact is he brought aot of attention to this form of dancing.Get over it y'all
Was talking with my Dad, this is what he said: " Don't get me wrong, I'm a firm believer of giving credit where credit is dued. Michael Jackson was an excellent dancer. In the 70's I grew up with the Electric Boogaloos. Same hood and street. Now, when Michael introduced the "Moonwalk" the nation on tv, the real name for it was Backsliding was already established in the 70s by the Boogaloos, and Boogaloo Creepin Sid specialized in it? Once again, give Credit where Credit is Dued."
AND FOR THE RECORD Oprah didnt ask Michael jackson WHERE DID YOU LEARN POPPIN? I saw that interview, she asked him about his style SHE NEVER SAID POPPIN. WHICH he got from SEVERAL people. Yep, these guys also say they invented the backslide. Thats one lie, so that makes them SUSPECT.
i didnt grow up in the 70's but from my research on music it looks like a lot of people had similar styles and great moves back then and i dont think they refernce each other at the end of there videos so why should michael be the only one who has to do it. simply put its just people trying to jump on someone that has fame so that hopefully they get fame aswell without putting in the hard work
ncinthehouse 6 days ago
yes that was my point aswell dance coz you wanna dance not only if people mention your name if they get fame. so many good dancers you see on youtube. so now if michael went on stage for the this is it concert he would now have to have a 5 minute speech at the end of the concert reading names of everyone he has seen dancing or els thay may think he has stollen a move or start crying about how he didnt mention them.
ncinthehouse 6 days ago

TheSubwaysurfer 2 weeks ago
For all the folks who think the boogaloos are lying, check out MJs earlier dance moves. No doubt Mike could dance, but there is a pronounced shift in his style of movement at one point in the 80s, and I believe it's due to their training. Mikes signature move prior to that was his spinning and a few "James Briwn"moves and yes, I HEARD the infamous "children of ghetto remark he made and was shocked. Mike even gave props to Fred Astaire for influencing his dancing but left the Boogaloos hanging.
TheSubwaysurfer 2 weeks ago
oh and another thing if michael ows you money for moves then you guys also owe spider man and thor a whole lot more money but you dont see them complaining they out saving the world ;) you should dance and do music coz you love to do it not only if people promise to mention your name. michael liked learning from others and then trying to perfect it. he learned used those ideas along with his own made the best music to go with it, dressed a million bucks on stage and sold millions, dont hate

but look you cant own a dance move ok, and did you ever think that maybe the reason he said kids from the ghetto is because he didnt just like your style of dancing but also the other kids that were around so if he were to give you credit he needs to name every other kid in the ghetto by name. though you guys are some of the best dancers and i respect you, obviously michael took that style of dance to a whole new level. to michael music wasnt just about dancing it was more than that.
ncinthehouse 3 months ago
im seeing a bunch of angry people when i watch this clip. and its sad because what did you expect michael to do turn around and give you his mansion and his bentley because you all had similar dance moves. i mean michael always says he always loved watching james brown, fred astaire, jackie wilson and so on but if you notice depending on what interview you are watching he may add another perfromers name or he may sometimes forget to say another artists name, he says what ever comes to his head
ncinthehouse 3 months ago
could steal your idea for a song, have it go platinum 5 times over and give you a job teachin my kids how to play the piano. PERIOD.

MJ was popping back in 1977, go check it out on youtube!! He did work with them but these guys like he stole stuff, which is odd considering their moves were stolen too. This guys says Michael learned the robot from Slim, but MJ was going the Robot in 73-74, again go check youtube. MJ was a combination of all styles and actually never did popping in his videos which again he was noted as a dancer from, he also didn't pop lock on Motown 25, just moonwalk

pamdanceehh 1 year ago
@pamdanceehh I agree. Michael certainly brought plenty of his own invention to dance (mostly in HOW he did the moves more often than purely creating them) since he honed and practiced his ass off... but everyone learns from others, no matter how god-like some want to believe their favorite artists are.Things like the robot, etc... were done by entertainers not even dancing-- think mimes, and other variety shows long before funk styles. It all is sampled and changed a bit and can look great.
abbeykroeter 1 year ago
@abbeykroeter i love mj music, but you are not 100% right with "his own invention". look at Pop N Taco and you know from him mj got his famous style and look...
breaklock 1 year ago
@breaklock Well "plenty" doesn't mean 100% anyway; I am thinking some of the panache Michael put on some moves are things he worked on, some copied from your reference and others, and some came up as new while practicing. I will look into Pop N Taco though thank you for the reference! I am not surprised if there is one more out there like hm that Michael learned from; and I'll enjoy seeing any of the pioneers if you remember some other names for me.
abbeykroeter 1 year ago
@abbeykroeter Well said! I have tried to tell many friends very much the same thing when they try to argue the justification in worshiping a few artists. I sighted mimes, and some entertaining dancers from the silent era that did some amazing yet odd work, but most people just don't seem to have time to believe the "conglomerate of talents" phenomenon as I call it... collecting the what you like, working into something solid on it's own. If anyone asks, give props to the ones that inspired it.

As for the other talk, bottom line is:
Michael Jackson had a LOT of his OWN moves which were also popular.
You could get thousands doing the moves MJ did yet, it was Michael who stood out & became so well-known for it because it was simply the WAY he was able to *execute each & every dance move. He was a good tap dancer, too.
tonm08 1 year ago
listen buddy: you could not have taught MJ how to pop and lock, your group electric boogaloos was created in 1977, and michael jackson was poping and locking since 1974, seen here watch?v=lD2OsUcgb00 , that means that Boogalo Sam did not invented this style, somebody else invented it way before 1974 because MJ sure got it from somewhere, from the GoGo brothers maybe?
affiliate30 1 year ago

KingofPepsi 1 year ago
@KingofPepsi You can find moves like the moonwalk in tap dance routines filmed before 1950. Look up "first moonwalk" youtube.. it will be entertaining. Some of the footage is quite old.
abbeykroeter 1 year ago
@abbeykroeter, Yes, thanks, I had already seen those old black and white footages of the origins of the backslide or moonwalk. I still say that it wasn't executed so smooth, effortless, and eye-fooling until Electric Boogaloo and Michael did it. In fact, Michael took it to a whole new level and made it his own.
Compare MJ when he first debuted the move on Motown 25 to when he did it on his Dangerous tour. It's obvious that he mastered it to smooth perfection over the years.

Back in England we heard about popping thing way back when....i myself have made some new moves in todays modern world...boogaloo sam did not invent all the moves but he did merge several ideas with help into a form that we know today...Mj had media working for him, but he should have given credit to boogaloo sam...i mean with that input the cradle of most western dance that has a pop or wave just would not be there...
imagine no BBoy culture.
sirlordcomixx1 1 year ago
I think no one person invents all the dances around today...but certain individuals actully put a dance together, that transcends a little party move and becomes something that a large number of people begin to get into... its what i call the Big Bang Theory...simply a moment when something becomes bigger than its self and all manner of people get into it, it may be Music Art Politics whatever but someone or a group are resonsible for that sudden surge of that art form or political idea..

Also Michael was doing the robot before he worked with them, they did a varied style. Michael did the robot back in 1973...they didn't work with michael in 1973 - 1974. Secondly wasn't it proven that they didn't invent anything and that Sam stole the entire dance style from others????
1980Triumph 2 years ago
sam did not steal the entire dance style. he was primarily the creator of the electric boogaloo style. also michael paid for the EB to teach AND coach him.

Nothing in dance was really invented, but it just variations of one move to another.

...and even these guys probably created many moves from scratch, BUT I would bet that they were inspired by things they saw too. All should try to site where they learned it from
abbeykroeter 2 years ago
Anyone who disrespects these guys is an idiot. Plain and simple and you know it. This is a rare chance to hear from some of the guys that never got much attention because they were so original nobody knew what to do with it yet, it remained "small time" in a way. Michael Jackson was awesome too, I only wish super talents like Michael gave cred to who they learned from right from the start, but producers, etc... probably keep it quiet on purpose.

Peace and God bless you all !!
hilfrazao 2 years ago
this thread is endless....I have seen better(hate to use that word when relating to artistic xpression) dancers in my lifetime....but a more talented singer I don't think we'll see in several lifetimes. That voice will never die...not to mention no matter who u are or how old u are....if its 1975 or 2075......if u hear a MJ song come on u can't help but want to dance....music like that is timeless.

A person only has so long on top before the next gen of dancer comes along and brushes them aside.
bboyillscience 2 years ago 3
ok dude, so u r saying MJ is a "fake ass bitch" cause he doesnt whip out a list of all the dncrs who have worked with him along the way? First of all please name the interview where he was asked "who taught you how to pop?" 2nd of all the interview with oprah was who taught you the moonwalk and I can name atleast 5 ppl - all "street dancers" who I know of who worked with him on the dance including Jeff Daniel, Coolie Jackson and Boogaloo Shrmp, so get ur facts straight before u call names
bboyche 2 years ago
for one thing ...if u would listen instead of hearing what u want to hear...i'm not disagreeing with you on the facts that u said about Mike. It just cracks my ass up how ever since he died everybody wants to jump up like their is greatest defender or some shit. Not to long ago b4 MJ died people didn't want nothing to do with him...now everyone wants to jump on the bandwagon now that they realized they lost a great talent. 2 yrs ago when I would be rollin around bumpin MJs music ....
bboyillscience 2 years ago
...people would look at me like I'm a crazy baby rapist, and guess what...I still jammed his music. Now everone acts like they're so hurt...so in reality u can say I think alot of people are "fack ass bitches". As for as the respect thing I'm just adding my thoughts on what these other legendary dancers are trying to say. Another thing...while alot of u kids are jumpin on the internet trying to learn shit easily without the work....real old skool cats like me had to learn the best way....
bboyillscience 2 years ago
....by talking and dancing with the real people. You can get on the internet and look up all the "facts" you want, but u will never have the true experience of being in the mix. As for as getting my facts straight I have danced with many of these guys you are talking about. Shrimp stayed the whole weekend at my homeboys house and kicked it for example. So u think I'm gonna believe some written whatever by whomever...or the real muthafucker in front of me droppin knowledge...granted their version
bboyillscience 2 years ago
...and when did I call ANYONE a name...I just straight honestly said...If someone asks YOU who taught you something, and you straight say something untrue...THEN YOU A FAKE DISRESPECTFUL BITCH. That statement wasn't aimed at Mike...but rather ANYBODY that fits that discription. I only know what people have told me about MJ...I don't know...I wasn't there. I do know that now they're are alot of fake cats ever since streetdance became popular again....watering down the culture with their BULLSHIT
bboyillscience 2 years ago
I have been an MJ fan since I was 6 and always defended him and even when he was being wrongly accused I always jammed his music! I have also been breakin and popping for about 14 yrs it might be less than you but I have been around the bboy world for a long time and I have heard a lot of ppl disrepect MJ when in actuality he did a lot for the culture and dancers such as popping Taco etc. I wasnt there either but I have read interviews and listened to interviews by Jeff Daniel and Shrimp
bboyche 2 years ago
and u know what u r right everyone has their own version...I have heard Shrimp praise MJ but then also put him down in other interviews. And yes although my knowledge is through the internet concerning old school cats influence on MJ there are so many that say they taught MJ this and that, that I know many dancers worked with him and it would be stupid for him to name them all each time he was asked about the moonwalk. Even if he did name some then others would be mad if he left them out
bboyche 2 years ago
I guess what I am trying to say is it seems like the EB's seem to be bitter that MJ did not promote their name when arguably Jeff Daniel and Poppin Taco had a much bigger influence on MJ but honestly he worked with so many dancers that it is unfair to criticize him for not naming some of them(MJ is NOT a popper, he incorparates a variety of styles and made his ownstyle) especially when you kept accepting his money with a smile on ur face as recently as "Ghosts." That is just two faced
bboyche 2 years ago
I agree with you on ALOT of old skool dancers attitudes. I understand how alot of these guys feel that hollywood screwed them..and I agree with them. The thing I strongly agree with you on is these guys need to get over that shit...move on. While people like you and I will never be considered more than good dancers...these guys will forever be considered legends to the dance community...to people like u and me They need to stop and think about that shit. Quit dwelling on the negative...
bboyillscience 2 years ago
....they could be lookin at the fact that they were lucky enough to be in the right place and era in time to achieve what they did. They had several years of being celebs in movies and shit. Most of us don't have that luxury...all we have is our passion for our art. Maybe if they thought about that alot of them wouldn't be dead or alcoholics. For me its a dam shame to meet one of your childhood idols and all they want to do is drink 12pks all day. stay real and keep dancin che....peace
bboyillscience 2 years ago
I def . agree with you man, the thing these guys were missing was financial and business education(but many were literally teenagers - so how can u blame em?). i was listening to an interview with Shrimp and they completely screwed him over with the contract to the Breakin series so dude is getting no royalties. u right - fact is many of these guys are legends and would gain a bigger following and have a lot more fans if they were more positive! either way i love the underground culture
bboyche 2 years ago
and I will keep dancing u too!
bboyche 2 years ago
sorry but which idol are you talking about just out of interest?
bkamara1 2 years ago
man I'm not gonna put names out there like that...I have nothing but love for these guys. I'll just say there are a lot of OGs still in shape holding it down for the kultcha (wiggles, kenny, sugapop, king tut,alieness...just to name a couple. Then they also have alot of OG cats that got swallowed up by that corporate media machine, and didn't have the strength to pull it back together..peace to all the fallen streetdancers..living or dead -one
bboyillscience 2 years ago
and if u want to talk about respect these guys need to stop spreading lies like they made MJ, they had very little impact on the man compared to Daniels and Poppin Taco amongst the many dancers. But MJ is on a level above all these cats bcs a lot of dudes would not be dancing or poppin if it weren't for him. He brought a lot of ppl up by making the moonwalk popular. They should pay respect to HIM! If they were so wronged - why did they keep taking his money and dancing in his videos?
bboyche 2 years ago
I think some of u guys are missing what they are saying. Of course MJ is one of the greatest singers of our time...no debate there. Off The Wall gets bumped almost daily in my ride. What they are talking about is the respect thing. It doesn't matter if Jimmy,Joe,Jack,or freakin Jill made up the move or when. There is never any such thing as a totally original idea any way. EVERYTHING is inspired by some other idea. The creative process is in the evolution of things.

Why was MJ doing the robot in the 70's? Dancing machine moves.
m7thm1 2 years ago
R.I.P michael but to all those who say he was doin this b4 he meet the EB's thats bull if u watch hiss old clips all he would do is locking thats all he didnt pop at all till he lerned n listin 2 what they said he said " he had a chance to say he lerned from the poppers n the boogaloo's but said i lerned it from kids in the ghetto its the fact that he didnt see them as dancer he saw them as ghetto kids
dobaclean1 2 years ago
and you know what was in MJ's head? MJ first lived in a 2 bedroom with 8 siblings = poverty=ghetto. Why do EB's always call themselves street dancers? they would never say anything else. ghetto never came out Mjs mouth but everyone knows that poppin, bboying etc are street dances so MJ told it like it is. Finally - the robot is categorized as a street dance and even under the general(and misnamed) category of "popping" - watch dancing machine which came out before this group was even formed.
bboyche 2 years ago

What's funny to me is anyone claiming they invented this or taught that because there are no new moves they all have been borrowed or taken from performers along time ago..there is a movie in the 30's showing a guy doing the backslide/moonwalk and the robot has been around forever...watch the old movies and tv shows...alot of breakdancers and poppers etc got their moves from watching kungfu theatre, cartoons, etc..so anyone can claime being taught but inventing it i doubt it.

this conversation is about how michael betrayed them, when u think of great dancing u istantly think Michael jackson, disregarding the fact that these men r really the ones that revolutionized dance, the only reason why thay taught michael is cause he paid them, i can hear his voice now "OMG!!! thats amazing i'll pay u anything to teach me that!!, then he got rich nd they were unheard of every since..
Drhuxtible 2 years ago
Darkclaw00700 2 years ago
You guys need to get a grip on reality. You sold him something, and now you're complaining that he used it? Artists don't ever thank people they PAID for. You guys are breaching the agreement - we should have NO IDEA who any of you are. You disgust me - and I would barely call myself an MJ fan. All famous people pick up things from people without MENTIONING them ever again. If you wanted the credit, you should have made it famous. As if.
TheSoSoAgnostic 2 years ago
Even though he PAID them he should give THEM CREDIT THAT THEY TAUGHT HIM THOSE MOVES! And the fact that he lied about the moonwalk is just ridiculous. Paid or not paid michael should've given them more respect than lies. Michael lied about his surgery saying that he had it twice. Michael just lies a lot.
Darkclaw00700 2 years ago
@TheSoSoAgnostic Agree that would be like MJ telling the world the trick of the moonwalker lean.Mj was ilusionist, used elements of magic etc in his shows. The magician never reveals the trick.By the way they didnt invented nothing, these dance developes in teh streets as Mj said.Mj also called New Edition to teach him, those moves were everywhere.MJ was poppin early 70s and doing JB back slides.Probably his staff asked around and brought these duedes to Mj to teach him what was poppin in da streets

TheSoSoAgnostic 2 years ago
lol, u r one of the people that worships him so much u just cant except it, michael is great and i love his work, but hes also a liar, he knows it, nd they know it, deal with it.......the only reason y its a big deal is because he said he got from somewere else than were he did, if he didnt want us to kno then he shuldnt hav said anything.
Drhuxtible 2 years ago 2
I agree with you. Michael was just afraid that the electric boogaloos will become famous. Michael always enjoyed the spotlight. He's exactly like a kid... lying a lot and wanting the attention. That's how kids usually are.
Darkclaw00700 2 years ago
The electric boogaloos were the core of the beginning of popping. Boogaloo sam created "popping". Get over it, michael learned from these gents.
geno604 2 years ago
History's more complex...
The EBs were the most "seen", but many other crews were popping before the EBs even made it visible on the mass media. (Medea serkas, G-Style, etc.)
But still, yes, MJ learned from them.

you know they sound like there is some sour grapes.Michael was able to take what you guys never noticed as genius work to the next level.
