The early '70s was a transitional time of breaking taboos. National Lampoon's "sick" humor was the counterpart to the Flower Power / Civil Rights Movement - the growth of politically correct thought-control and sacred cows. They were just being naughty boys. In context, breaking free from what we all know is the proper thing to say was cathartic. Haven't you ever heard somebody reply to something funny as "That's SO wrong!" Gut busting comedy is that line between laughing and puking.
I'm glad that not ALL of Chevy Chase's comedy was THIS sexist, though when it involved women at all, it was usually horribly sexist. And hearing those race-related jokes was rather uncomfortable and shocking. Chevy Chase is a very funny comedian, though a lot of his stuff is just much too much.
